This paper describes the use of orthogonal space- time block codes to overcome the performance and complexity difficulties associated with the use of an offset modulation with space-time trellis codes in multiple-input multiple-output communication systems. The orthogonal space-time block code is applied to offset QPSK modulated waveforms in the same way it would be applied to symbols. The procedure allows the receiver to orthogonalize the link. The main benefits of this orthogonalization are 1) the removal of the noise correlation at the input to the space-time trellis decoder and 2) the elimination of I/Q interference resulting from multi-antenna transmission. These benefits are achieved at the expense of data rate. The data rate reduction is a function of the rate of the orthogonal space-time block code.

The increasing development of mobile applications has changed the traditional demands of computer networks, which must now provide ubiquitous broadband wireless communication. In this context, IEEE 802.16 standardizes the physical and medium access control layers of the technology, aiming to allow network access in both nomadic and mobile scenarios. In this work we analyze the impact caused by overhead on the bandwidth allocation mechanism of WiMAX networks. Our main focus is to evaluate the number of SSs that can be served, and the influence of adaptive modulation and coding configuration. Finally, we discuss the importance of considering physical impairments in the process of designing a broadband wireless access network.

In TxAA HSDPA downlink a basestation is capable of serving several users simultaneously. The users are distinguished by different spreading sequences and their data chip streams are weighted by individual precoding coefficients. In this contribution we derive an MMSE equalizer for TxAA HSDPA downlink that takes the interference of the other users into account. Compared to the straightforward receiver that neglects the interference of other users, a performance gain of up to 4 dB can be achieved.

In this work, we study the finite-user stability region of a slotted ALOHA random access network with cooperative users. The network consists of multiple cooperating pairs where the users in each pair is allowed to cooperate by relaying each others' messages to the access point (AP). Spatial diversity gains are achieved since the packet of a cooperative user can be transmitted through independent fading channels, eg. the direct transmission path and the cooperative relaying path. Most works in the literature on cooperative communications focus on the physical layer aspects such as coding, modulation, transceiver signal processing etc. In this paper, we study the advantages of user cooperation from a MAC layer perspective and devise queueing strategies to exploit the cooperative diversity gains in a random access network. Extending upon our previous results for the two-user case, we study the stability of the finite-user cooperative system that consists of multiple cooperating pairs. By treating each cooperative pair as a transmission entity, we derive inner bounds for the finite-user stability region and propose a ranking system to characterize the transmission entities' relative tendency of being stable (or unstable).

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, which is known to have a robustness against multipath environments, exhibits signal waveform with high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAR), and therefore some PAR reduction techniques should be incorporated for practical communication systems. The clipping and filtering (CAF) is known as a simple and practical method to reduce the PAR, but it introduces nonlinear distortion that may cause substantial degradation in its BER performance. The clipping noise cancellation (CNC) is a promising approach that can compensate for this degradation, but its achievable performance has not been thoroughly analyzed. In this paper, we study the achievable performance of a CNC technique for the OFDM with high-order coded modulation with CAF. We investigate the performance of the soft-input soft-output (SISO) iterative decoding between the channel decoder and soft mapping, which can significantly improve the BER performance at the cost of increasing receiver complexity. The existence of the SISO decoder also enables us to analyze the performance of CNC by EXIT chart. Furthermore, the performances of bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and multilevel coded modulation (MLC) are compared and it turns out that MLC will outperform BICM in some cases.

This paper focuses on the applicability of bit-interleaved space-time coded modulation with iterative decoding (BI-STCM-ID) to wireless local area networks (WLAN). A new intuitive space-time diversity scheme, which ensures a low error rate for small signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and good asymptotic performance, is provided. The presented technique can ensure compatibility with todaypsilas WLAN specifications. The EXtrinsic Information Transfer Chart (EXIT) and the bit error rate (BER) simulations confirm its usefulness.

In next generation wireless networks, system resources such as transmission power and channelization codes should be allocated efficiently and fairly to individual transmissions. Efficient assignment of channelization codes such as orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) codes in WCDMA-based cellular networks is crucial in supporting the delay and rate guarantees of real-time flows. However, OVSF codes support data rates that are powers of two and do not support many intermediate data rates. This reduces some flexibility in the allocation of code resources, and under poor channel conditions it may result in over-provisioning a real-time flow as well as under-provisioning a non-real-time flow. Nonblocking OVSF (NOVSF) codes can, however, support many intermediate data rates. This paper proposes an NOVSF code/time-slot allocation algorithm to achieve better system utilization and better flexibility in code allocation. Simulation results show that when compared to OVSF codes, the use of NOVSF codes reduces the call blocking probability of real-time flows and provides better overall throughput for non-real-time flows.

The combination of user multiplexing and data encoding within Ultra Wideband systems has been proposed to improve bit error performance. Relative to conventional binary coding, this technique has shown to reduce error rates in scarcely populated systems. Where non-binary turbo coding modulates data to form an integer sequence, a random mapping is generally applied to develop a time hopping sequence. This paper explores the possibility of mapping through the application of truncated hyperbolic congruence codes. Comparative results against a random mapping indicate an improvement in system performance for higher turbo iteration levels in the receiver. Transceiver architecture is based upon the transmitter side equalization approach of time reversed communications.

This paper generalizes the information theoretic achievable rate analysis of time (slot length) adaptive and non- adaptive incremental redundancy (IR) hybrid ARQ (HARQ) of earlier works to bandwidth (fixed slot length) or time x bandwidth adaptive IR HARQ systems operating in a block fading channel. It establishes the relationship between the 'sub-packet' rates and corresponding slot capacities to guarantee arbitrary reliability and conversely the condition for outage.
