This paper proposes a unified speech/audio codec by adopting a single channel harmonic separation module as a pre-processor. A modulation frequency analysis method is used for harmonic separation, and the separated components are first encoded by an appropriate codec, e.g. speech codec. The error between input and the encoded signal is re- encoded by another codec. Though any type of codec can be used for the purpose, we adopt two state-of-the-art international standards (AMR-WB and HE-AAC) to provide an interoperability option. The amount of allocated bits to each stage is controlled by a power ratio of separated harmonic components to input signal. Subjective listening tests verify the consistency of the proposed method in speech, music and mixed signal inputs.

In broadband wireless system, the signal energy is scattered and reflected from objects in the environment, components of the signal arriving at the receiver are spread out over a longer period of time than is desirable. The challenge is then to provide a high-performance reliable data link that can operate with the restricted receiver power levels, severe channel fading due to multipath reflections and interfering energy from other devices nearby. With OFDM, it is possible to use a differential coding/differential detection either in the time or frequency domain depending on the condition of transmission channels with the adoption of DQPSK as a method of subcarrier modulation. This paper proposes an approximate derivation method of the bit error rate (BER) in DQPSK/OFDM system over frequency non-selective Nakagmai-Rice and Rayleigh fading channels. The validity of this equation is confirmed from the fact that the BER derived from this approximate equation coincides with that from the computer simulation, even when the system parameters, for example Doppler frequency, Rician parameter and so on, are varied. This paper will also review where OFDM is applicable and future applications.

This paper addresses the problem of efficient broadcasting of resource allocations descriptors for CBR applications (e.g., VoIP) in OFDMA-based wireless systems. In such systems mapping is the process of allocating resources and representing them is the mapping overhead. Existing mapping algorithms require an allocation descriptor to be broadcast in each frame for each allocated resource for every served subscriber. Information concerning the allocations is crucial for proper system operation, therefore it is broadcast on the wireless down link with low modulation and high repetition rate. The mapping overhead which is a function of the number of served subscribers is usually large and consumes a substantial part of down link resources. We present the notion of semi fixed allocations that allows a substantial reduction of the mapping overhead. We show that by taking advantage of the periodicity of VoIP frames and by applying semi fixed allocations in the existing resource allocation process, the mapping overhead can be reduced substantially. We present an innovative system model for the problem on hand and for evaluating the solutions. Using this model we show that the problem is in NP hard and present a set of observations on the resource allocation process leading to good mapping decisions from the perspective of mapping overhead. We present new mapping algorithms implementing those mapping decisions and show that by extensive simulations with these mapping algorithms the overhead can be reduced to 10% of the overhead experienced in OFDMA-based systems such as WiMAX and IEEE802.16, while retaining a low computational complexity.

OFDM is the digital modulation scheme that multiplexes multiple orthogonal sub-carriers that are digitally modulated. One of the schemes that improve the performance of OFDM transmission is the sub-carrier adaptive modulation scheme. In order to perform sub-carrier adaptive modulation, it is necessary to transmit the allocation information of modulation schemes for each sub-carrier and this degrades transmission rate[1]. In order to improve this problem, the use of pre- coded OFDM is effective and it is possible to reduce amount of allocation information of modulation[2]. In this paper, the scheme that controls the symbol modulation scheme, transmission power of each sub-carrier and coding rate according to the channel situation under the impulsive multi-path channel is analyzed in order to improve the performance of the adaptive modulation scheme of the pre-coded OFDM transmission.

This work describes the strategies to improve the channel quality indicator (CQI) for multi-state channels in 802.16e (wimax) based systems. The method includes the use of Exponential effective SNR mapping (EESM) method as part of the modulation/coding selection process and the problems associated with this technique has been studied. MI-ESM (Mutual Information based Effective SNR mapping) SNR metric has been used for link prediction. An MMIB (Mean mutual information per bit) metric is calculated and based on this BER prediction and the simulated results were compared with numerical results. The proposed approximation has been applied to HSDPA to select the best transport and resource combination (TFRC) for link adaptation.

We study the statistical nature of the multiuser interference (MUI) from pulse-based ultrawideband (UWB) signals with time-hopping (TH) and pulse position modulation (PPM). We determine the domain of validity for the Gaussian assumption for three different conditions: An ideal propagation channel with perfect and imperfect power control, as well as a multipath channel with rdquoperfect averagerdquo power control. Results for imperfect power control suggest that the Gaussian approximation can be used if we consider a large enough number of active users N u and/or number of pulses per symbol N s , e.g., for low data rate systems with large number of users. Results for multipath suggest that in dense multipath environment a low number of N u and/or N s is enough to reach Gaussianity.

This paper proposes an overlapped code division multiple access (OVCDMA) system where each user is assigned a unique convolutional spreading code and all the users access the channel simultaneously. Node error probability and symbol error probability upper bounds of OVCDMA in Gaussian multiple access channel are derived based on the random coding arguments. The former one ensures the existence of convolutional spreading code dedicated to M-ary (M>2) modulation and the later one is tight for moderate signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, the random coding simulation results show that the symbol error rate gets lower by increasing the convolutional spreading code length. Finally, several convolutional spreading codes dedicated to QPSK are found by random coding search and free Euclidean distance calculation. They are compared with conventional modulation scheme under the condition of same spectral efficiency. Simulations for these fixed convolutional spreading codes show that notable coding gain are achieved in Gaussian multiple access channel.

The estimation of receiving impulse template can be simplified by the transmitted reference (TR) signaling scheme in ultra-wideband communication. However, in multiuser environment, the TR scheme would be severely interfered for its non-coherence. By modulating the transmitted-reference with a pseudo-random code, we propose an analog LMS detection based on minimum mean-square error criterion to suppress the interferences. The method uses not only the waveform of the TR signal, but also its symbol information. The performance is further derived and the width of integration window is discussed.

Presented paper concerns with HSDPA (high speed packet data access) concept, especially describes HARQ (hybrid ARQ) schemes used to achieve high data throughput in 3G networks. Simulation is done in AWGN channel using soft decision viterbi decoder for decoding convolutionally encoded data. Comparative simulation of Stop & Wait protocol using Chase combining and Incremental redundancy is shown.

In this paper, we propose a new connection admission control (CAC) algorithm accommodating various classes of traffic, which can easily be implemented in mobile WiMAX system. The proposed CAC algorithm has three characteristics: first, the variation of air capacity is taken into account by measuring the distribution of modulation and coding scheme (MCS) levels offline; second, we estimate the mean and variance of frame occupancy ratio of each QoS flow based on declared traffic descriptors; and third, the admission region is determined to satisfy the target overflow probability in the bufferless model. Through numerical analysis, we show that the accuracy of the proposed CAC is satisfactory.
