A method is described for identifying simultaneous signals from different transmit antennas in multi-antenna sounders. Multiple orthogonal signals are produced from one pseudorandom code by using it to modulate RF carriers at pre-calculated offset frequencies. Although their frequency spectra are interleaved, the spectral lines from different transmitters are separable by Fourier transform at the receiver output. Since there is a one-to-one relationship between the length of the signal required for Fourier analysis and the number of orthogonal sounding signals, any arbitrary number of such signals can be generated, but Doppler spreads limit the number that can be employed with acceptable isolation among them.

High power converters are built using high-voltage and high-current rated semiconductors. The commutation of these devices imply large amounts of energy per cycle leading to very low switching frequency in order to avoid a high rise on the semiconductors temperature. The consequence is high harmonic distortion generated by the converter. Grid codes requirements specify the maximum admitted harmonic distortion. The well known selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) technique has proved to be useful in eliminating some of the undesired harmonics without increasing the switching frequency, leaving the rest of them free. The solution to the rest of harmonics is to add bulky and expensive filters. Recently, the method named selective harmonic mitigation pulse width modulation (SHMPWM) has been introduced. The aim of this technique is to mitigate the amplitude of the undesirable harmonics, to acceptable values to meet the grid code, considering a larger number of harmonics. In this paper a practical implementation of this technique in a closed loop scheme is presented. The experimental results using a 150 kW three-level diode-champed converter show that the output signals meet the EN 50160 and CIGRE WG 36-05 grid codes. Comparisons between SHMPWM and SHEPWM are included in the experiments, showing the superior performances of the SHMPWM technique.

We present a reverse concatenation (RC) architecture with maximum transition run (MTR) modulation codes and Reed-Solomon (RS) error-correction codes (ECCs). The scheme employs a high-rate primary (pre-RS) MTR code and a secondary (post-RS) MTR code, which controls error propagation. The two modulation codes are designed in such a way to maximize the overall code rate and maintain simple hardware implementation. Simulation results demonstrate superior performance compared to reverse concatenation with non-MTR codes, especially at a relatively high recording density.

A recently proposed space-time block coding (STBC) signal construction method that combines orthogonal design with sphere packing, referred to here as (STBC-SP), has shown useful performance improvements over Alamouti's conventional orthogonal design. In this contribution, we propose a purely symbol-based LDPC-coded scheme, demonstrating that the performance of STBC-SP systems can be further improved by concatenating sphere packing aided modulation with non-binary LDPC and by performing symbol-based turbo detection between the non-binary LDPC decoder and a rate-1 non-binary inner precoder. We also investigate the convergence behaviour of this symbol-based concatenated scheme with the aid of novel non-binary extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. Finally, we demonstrate that in the investigated scenarios it requires 1-2 dB lower power in comparison to equivalent effective-throughput 0.5, 0.75 and 1 bit/symbol systems employing bit-based turbo detection.

In this paper we present a Golay code based carrier phase recovery scheme. Golay code is a pair of complementary codes. Golay codes have been used for channel coding in communications. We have used the side lobe suppression property of Golay Code in recovery of the phase of the carrier. We begin with the discussion of side lobes suppression property of the Golay code. Then we present the pass band scheme i.e. the QPSK scheme for the transmission of Golay code, and the algorithm for the recovery of the phase of Golay Code based QPSK signal. We have adopted the serial search, parallel phase search and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) techniques for carrier phase recovery. Carrier phase recovery algorithm using Golay code is a new addition in the carrier phase recovery methods. This new scheme exhibits excellent carrier phase recovery performance. With its sound mathematical basis, the Golay code based carrier phase recovery algorithm is expected to become an important tool in communications and carrier phase recovery applications.

Adaptive beamforming algorithms are presented for time-division multiple-access (TDMA) systems that use Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK) for the transmitted signals. A semi-blind beamforming algorithm based on a least-squares (LS) approximation for constant modulus signals leads to a relatively simple and practical receiver that suppresses cochannel interference (CCI). In order to further improve the receiver performance, filtered training sequences are used to compensate for the phase offsets of the cochannel GMSK signals. Computer simulations demonstrate that this hybrid algorithm improves the receiver performance, whereby the beampattern nulls suppress the CCI affecting the coded data of the TDMA bursts.

Repeat accumulate (RA) codes are the simplest one in the family of the capacity approaching codes, with great potential in the applications of modern communications systems. RA codes combine both the advantages of turbo codes and LDPC codes and are implemented using a turbo code representation to perform encoding and an LDPC code representation to perform decoding. The RA interleaver is chosen by random construction using the bit-filling method. In this paper, we investigate the performances of bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with iterative decoding and BICM with iterative decoding and demapping (BICM-ID) for bandwidth-efficient transmission. Both BICM and BICM-ID systems using systematic RA codes with Gray labelling on AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels are considered. Simulation results are presented for 16-QAM examples for rates frac12 and frac34.

We consider the performance of adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) over a fading channel for the case that the transmitter has only partial channel state information (CSI). We evaluate the degradation due to the partial CSI in terms of additionally required SNR by simulations and an analytical approximation. Then, we propose an ACM scheme with fast link-level retransmissions based on cyclic incremental redundancy and compare its performance to an equivalent scheme based on Chase combining. For both HARQ (hybrid automatic repeat request) schemes, we develop an analytical approximation for the throughput and the delay.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems enhance reliability and improve throughput for a given total transmit power. In actual systems, the channel and noise parameters must be estimated to capture the MIMO gains. In this paper, we couple a direct, q-ary Galois field [GF(q)], low-density parity-check (LDPC) space-time coding and modulation scheme with a receiver that iterates between decoding the transmitted symbols, estimating the convolutive MIMO channel with pilots and symbol decisions, and removing inter-symbol interference. The result is a powerful system that outperforms linear space-time equalization and performs within one decibel of a system with perfect channel knowledge and no inter-symbol interference.
