A new method for adjusting positions of signal points of a traditional signal constellation used in the BICM-ID (Bit-Interleaved Coded modulation with Iterative Decoding) system is proposed. Optimal rotation angle versus SNRs (Signal-to-Noise Power ratios) in the sense of providing the system with attainable lowest BER (Bit Error Rate) are reported.

Coded mask imaging can produce excellent images in the hard X-ray range from ∼10 to 200 keV, and up to several MeV in the gamma-ray range. Sub-degree resolution is obtained for hard X-rays and a few-degree resolution for gamma-rays. However, these capabilities are realized with large instruments, several meters in length, and limited fields of view, tens of degrees, which are not suitable for large-area surveillance to assess radiological threats. We have developed coded mask imaging techniques to address this deficiency. They operate into the MeV range and provide high sensitivity over a wide FOV, 140 degrees, with a single instrument. This is possible by designing for limited angular resolution, ∼20 degrees, in order to reduce the otherwise negative consequence of vignetting by the mask. With this resolution, few-degree localizations are obtained with detections of ∼10 sigma significance, which usually provides adequate positioning to associate a radiation source with a specific object for follow-up investigation. We report on the design, modeling, and tests of a hand-held CZT-based coded mask imager that uses these techniques to image a 140 degree FOV with a nearly constant resolution of 20 degrees. The 7.5 mm thick coded mask provides good modulation and, therefore, good sensitivity up to 1 MeV and beyond, and the sensitivity is nearly uniform across the FOV due to an optimized coded mask/detector array design. The imager employs CZT pixel detectors that provide ∼1% energy resolution at 662 keV

In this paper, we introduce distributed generalized cyclic delay diversity (DGCDD) for cooperative signaling in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless relay networks. We assume that the set of cooperating nodes is a priori unknown and assign each node in the network a fixed cyclic filter (CF). Assuming bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) for forward error correction, we derive an optimization criterion for the CFs and show that DGCDD can exploit the full diversity of the wireless channel. A numerical method for CF design is provided and compared with randomly generated filters. Simulation results confirm the excellent performance of the proposed scheme and show that the performance loss of DGCDD compared to GCDD with co-located antennas is small for sufficiently long CFs.

In the last years, several strategies for maximizing the throughput performance of IEEE 802.11 networks have been proposed in literature. Specifically, it has been shown that optimizations are possible both at the medium access control (MAC) layer, and at the physical (PHY) layer. In fact, at the MAC layer, it is possible to minimize the channel waste due to collisions and backoff expiration times, by tuning the minimum contention window as a function of the network congestion level. At the PHY layer, it is possible to improve the transmission robustness, by selecting a suitable modulation/coding scheme as a function of the channel quality perceived by the stations. However, the feasibility of these optimizations rely on the availability of MAC/PHY measurements, which are often impracticable or very rough. In this paper, we propose a joint MAC/PHY estimator based on a bi-dimensional extended Kalman filter, devised to separately track the collision probability and the channel error probability suffered by each station. To this purpose, we derive a relationship between the unobservable system state and measurements which are performed in a distributed way by all the competing stations.

The satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (S-DMB) service has been launched and can provide high quality audio, video, and data broadcasting services to the handheld mobile receivers via the geostationary satellite. To cope with the interference caused by the multi-path fading, the current S-DMB system utilizes half of the Walsh codes. To make full use of channel resources in the S-DMB system, a combinational method of the spreading and modulation technique is proposed for use in the S-DMB system. Applying the proposed method of the unused Walsh resources, we can achieve the increment of the system capacity without degrading the service quality of the S-DMB.

In this paper we introduce a novel codebook partition algorithm for quantization index modulation (QIM), which is applied to information hiding in instant low bit-rate speech stream. The QIM method divides the codebook into two parts, each representing '0' and '1' respectively. Instead of randomly partitioning the codebook, the relationship between codewords is considered. The proposed algorithm - complementary neighbor vertices (CNV) guarantees that every codeword is in the opposite part to its nearest neighbor, and the distortion is limited by a bound. The feasibility of CNV is proved with graph theory. Moreover, in our work the secret message is embedded in the field of vector quantization index of LPC coefficients, getting the benefit that the distortion due to QIM is lightened adaptively by the rest of the encoding procedure. Experiments on iLBC and G.723.1 verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Both objective and subjective assessments show the proposed method only slightly decreases the speech quality to an indistinguishable degree. The hiding capacity is no less than 100 bps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work adopting graph theory to improve the codebook partition while using QIM in low bit-rate streaming media.

An algorithm for GPS receiver performing to mitigate cross correlations between multiple satellite signals is presented. By using the known pseudosequence, the cross-correlation between every two signals can be computed, whereas this cross correlation value often changes since Doppler frequency shift and code phase difference. With aim to estimate the correct cross-correlation, a synthetical factor was presented base on analysis of the characteristics of cross correlation under the influence of Doppler frequency difference and fractional code phase difference. Simulation result shows this scheme can mitigate the interference of 75%.

Continuous phase modulation has been favorably considered among other modulation types for use in DS-CDMA communications due to its constant envelope and compact spectrum. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, a theoretical framework based BER performance calculation of a DS-CDMA system with CPM modulation is presented. Our simulations validate that analytical methodology. Second, BER performances of various constant power spreading code families (binary valued Walsh, Gold, Walsh-like 7/8-length codes) are simulated for BPSK and CPM modulations. It is shown that CPM signaling based systems outperform BPSK modulation for all scenarios considered.

This paper presents a MIMO adaptive beamforming in the MC-CDMA system. At the transmitter, a space-time block coding is concatenated to MC-CDMA modulation. At the receiver, an adaptive GSC beamformer is to filter the desired user and suppress interferences by beamspace processing. Combined with the space-time block coding, the smart antenna forms multi-mainbeams toward the desired user. The system performance is evaluated by illustrating the estimated DOAs, beampatterns, weight convergence and BERs in both the flat and frequency selective fadings.

In this paper we consider hybrid automatic repeat request transmission based on binary phase shift keying modulation. Our objective is to improve the performance of the retransmissions, keeping at the same time the complexity and the performance of the first transmission unaltered. We conclude that the so-called mapping rearrangement (MR) may considerably improve the performance if multidimensional modulation is applied. We evaluate the theoretical limits of bit-interleaved coded modulation with MR, verify the functioning of the practical coding scheme, and propose to improve the performance via iterative detection-decoding (BICM-ID) which brings considerable gains. In particular, for high coding rates, a 4 dB SNR gain over transmission without MR may be achieved.
