In this paper, a low complexity joint spreading and inverse fast Fourier transform (S-IFFT) processing for multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) is introduced. Using the orthogonality transformation property of IFFT, the frequency domain spreading is applied during the IFFT processing for complexity reduction. Moreover, we propose a class of low complexity architecture for the uplink MC-CDMA transmitter according to several storage requirements. Comparison with the conventional MC-CDMA transmitter system shows that the proposed architecture can save a larger amount of computation. The proposed scheme is therefore suitable for efficient implementation of a MC-CDMA transmitter.

In this paper we consider space-time coded wideband transmission from multiple base-stations. These systems can provide improved resistance to shadowing and extended range. An inherent challenge with these systems, however, is asynchronous reception of the signal elements. We describe three full space diversity approaches for wideband transmission from non-collocated antennas, with throughput, diversity, receiver-complexity trade-offs. Common to all systems are OFDM-type signaling, bit interleaved coded modulation, and iterative decoding. The lowest data-rate lowest complexity system employs an inner orthogonal space- time block code with embedded OFDM transmission, while the highest data-rate highest complexity scheme does not employ an inner code. The latter scheme can provide even higher data rates at reduced space diversity.

In this paper, a new and simple arithmetic operation for network coding (NC) in wireless communication is proposed. It is built on the assumption of constant modulus signals with phase conveyed information such as PSK and employs, in contrast to classical NC finite field additions, a multiplicative NC operation. The benefit of the method is that it decouples the NC operation from forward error correction (FEC) and modulation imposed joint constraints and thus permits for greater flexibility to adapt code and modulation rates to different user. It may further reduce hardware (HW) complexity and cost for NC enabled relays and it may operate directly on (potentially noisy) baseband signals. The performance of the proposed NC method is examined in a three phase NC bi-directional relaying scenario and compared to a traditional four phase non-NC scheme illustrating performance benefits in the high signal to noise (SNR) region and its viability for the former.

Conventional multi-antenna systems require multiple RF chains, baseband blocks, and analog-to-digital converters (ADC) in the receiver front-end, mandating substantial increases in power consumption and chip area. In this paper, we introduce a new universal code-modulated path-sharing multi-antenna (CPMA) receiver architecture suitable for any multi-antenna scheme including spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity. The receiver utilizes code modulation to distinguish different antenna signals before combining them in the analog domain. The combined signals propagate through a single shared path and are later recovered in the digital domain for further processing. Due to the spread spectrum nature of code modulation, a larger bandwidth is required for the blocks in the shared path. To alleviate this effect, we examine the use of non-orthogonal signature codes. Analysis and simulation results indicate that by properly selecting non-orthogonal code sets, the spreading factor, and therefore, the overall analog signal bandwidth is reduced while incurring minimal performance degradation.

For space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (ST-BICM) systems, applying a turbo-reception between the space-time (ST) detector and the error-correcting decoder leads to the best performance. However, this receiving technique requires the computation of high quality log-likelihood ratios (LLR). The computation complexity of optimal a posteriori probabilities (APP) by the ST detector is exponential in the ST system dimensions. We propose in this paper a detector that significantly reduces this complexity, while guaranteeing the good quality of LLR. Representing the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system as a tree, the detection consists in searching for the best candidates through the tree by maximizing a metric. The LLR on decoded bits are computed over this list of best candidates. The use of a constant bias value in the cost function accelerates this search by favouring the deeper points of the tree.

Global positioning system has been extremely matured in the navigation and positioning field. However, there are still some limits in some aspects and some special application areas, the performance should be improved by other techniques. The pseudolite as a GPS-like ground transmitter provides a new research direction to get a high positioning accuracy and reliability. In this paper, we have described the core technologies of design and simulation realization about the C/A codes of the pseudolite system construction. It is shown that the implementation in Matlab contributes to analyzing of the signal structure and designing the C/A codes and both the simulation results and VHDL realization results are consistent.

In this paper, we propose a new connection admission control (CAC) algorithm accommodating various classes of traffic, which can easily be implemented in mobile WiMAX system. The proposed CAC algorithm has three characteristics: first, the variation of air capacity is taken into account by measuring the distribution of modulation and coding scheme (MCS) levels offline; second, we estimate the mean and variance of frame occupancy ratio of each QoS flow based on declared traffic descriptors; and third, the admission region is determined to satisfy the target overflow probability in the bufferless model. Through numerical analysis, we show that the accuracy of the proposed CAC is satisfactory.

Turbo equalization is known as an advanced iterative equalization and decoding technique that allows to enhance the performance of the data transmission over a frequency selective fading channel. The turbo equalizer will result in extra receiver complexity, but isolated to the base-station, which does not have stringent power constraints. In this paper, a turbo equalization technique to improve Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) performance is proposed. A new adaptive coefficients solution for frequency domain equalization is considered. The work is in the context of UTRA Long Term Evolution (LTE) Uplink. The performance is evaluated for 1x2 Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) antenna configuration in a 6 paths Typical Urban (TU-06) channel profile. For assessment purpose, the results are compared with SC-FDMA MMSE and OFDMA schemes. Simulation results show that the turbo equalizer can improve the BLER performance around 1 dB with only a few iterations, and improve the SC-FDMA performance over OFDM, especially at high coding rate.

Bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is a pragmatic approach to achieve power and bandwidth efficient transmission. At this low-density parity-check codes (LDPCC) can be utilized which are then concatenated with a modulator. The concatenation of LDPCC and modulator is done via a bit interleaver which has the task to spread information. While the matched design of an optimal LDPC degree distribution with respect to a given mapping scheme is well observed it is often assumed that the probabilistic values passed from demodulator to the LDPCC decoder are independent due to the mapping interleaver. However for higher order modulations, e.g. 16-QAM or 256-QAM, more and more bits are getting correlated during the demodulation process. The connectivity of these correlated bits have to be considered during the design of the mapping interleaver with respect to the graph of the concatenated LDPC codes. In this paper, we present the design of mapping interleavers of BICM schemes utilizing LDPC codes. Simulation results show the strong influence of correlated inputs to the performance of LDPC decodes. This correlations can cause a high error floor if the mapping interleaver is not carefully designed.

Coded mask imaging can produce excellent images in the hard X-ray range from ∼10 to 200 keV, and up to several MeV in the gamma-ray range. Sub-degree resolution is obtained for hard X-rays and a few-degree resolution for gamma-rays. However, these capabilities are realized with large instruments, several meters in length, and limited fields of view, tens of degrees, which are not suitable for large-area surveillance to assess radiological threats. We have developed coded mask imaging techniques to address this deficiency. They operate into the MeV range and provide high sensitivity over a wide FOV, 140 degrees, with a single instrument. This is possible by designing for limited angular resolution, ∼20 degrees, in order to reduce the otherwise negative consequence of vignetting by the mask. With this resolution, few-degree localizations are obtained with detections of ∼10 sigma significance, which usually provides adequate positioning to associate a radiation source with a specific object for follow-up investigation. We report on the design, modeling, and tests of a hand-held CZT-based coded mask imager that uses these techniques to image a 140 degree FOV with a nearly constant resolution of 20 degrees. The 7.5 mm thick coded mask provides good modulation and, therefore, good sensitivity up to 1 MeV and beyond, and the sensitivity is nearly uniform across the FOV due to an optimized coded mask/detector array design. The imager employs CZT pixel detectors that provide ∼1% energy resolution at 662 keV
