In orthogonal frequency division multiple access networks, link adaptation (LA) selects the appropriate modulation and coding scheme for the upcoming transmission time interval. Since LA relies on measurements of the interference level and assumes that it remains similar during the next scheduling instance, the performance of LA depends on the variation (rather than simply the level) of intercell interference (ICI). In this paper we propose a minimum variance scheduler that allows for opportunistic scheduling - and thereby to take advantage of multi-user frequency diversity - but keeps the variation of intercell interference at a low level. We build on previously proposed collision models (detailed in own work and related other papers) and study the interplay between this scheduler and two intercell interference coordination (ICIC) methods that we call random and coordinated subcarrier allocation. We find that the proposed low variance scheduling scheme together with coordinated ICIC reduces ICI and its variance and is superior to other scheduling techniques in terms of the overall system throughput.

This paper focuses on the uplink of multicell IEEE 802.16-d WiMax systems with OFDM modulation and antenna array at the base stations. We propose an analytical framework to assess the average error probability of all the different transmission modes over space-time dispersive Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed method takes into account the effects of the multilevel modulation, the error correction capability of the concatenated code, the interleaving scheme, the power-angle structure of the inter-cell interference and the array processing at the base station. Simulation results corroborate the proposed analysis for a IEEE 802.16-d cellular system over different propagation scenarios.

We propose a serial unequal error protection (UEP) scheme using trellis coded modulation and an adaptive equalizer for use in mobile fading channel communication environments. We propose two types of signal constellations, TRAP and RING, to realize unequal error protection and show their performance in fading channels using computer simulations.

Modern codes such as turbo and LDPC codes operate at low signal-to-noise ratios, which makes carrier synchronization a challenging problem. This paper first develops a new Monte-Carlo based method to derive Cramer-Rao lower bounds for non-data aided carrier synchronization. Using these theoretical results, it is shown that carrier frequency can in theory be acquired much more rapidly than existing techniques for the DVB-S2 waveform, a commercial satellite waveform, which has also been adopted for use in military satellite communications. The paper then develops practical realizations of the maximum-likelihood carrier synchronizers for non-data aided carrier synchronization. The proposed simplified architecture is also shown to have significantly lower acquisition times and better tracking performance than commonly used carrier synchronizers for DVB-S2.

The construction of space-time codes for wireless cooperative communications is investigated by considering a pragmatic approach based on the concatenation of convolutional codes and BPSK/QPSK modulation to obtain cooperative codes for relay networks. We also derive the pairwise error probability, an asymptotic bound for frame error probability and a design criterion to optimize both diversity and coding gain. This framework is useful to characterize the behavior of cooperative pragmatic space-time codes (CP-STC) and to set up a code search procedure to obtain good pragmatic space-time codes (P-STC) with overlay construction (COP-STC) which are suitable for cooperative communication with a variable number of relays in quasi static channel. We find that P-STCs perform quite well in block fading channels, including quasi-static channel, even with a low number of states and relays, despite the fact that the implementation of P-STC requires common convolutional encoders and Viterbi decoders with suitable generators and rates, thus having low complexity.

Direct application of network coding at the physical layer - physical layer network coding (PNC) - is a promising technique for two-way relay wireless networks. In a two-way relay network, relay nodes are used to relay two-way information flows between pairs of end nodes. This paper proposes a precise definition for PNC. Specifically, in PNC, a relay node does not decode the source information from the two ends separately, but rather directly maps the combined signals received simultaneously to a signal to be relayed. Based on this definition, PNC can be further sub-classed into two categories - PNCF (PNC over finite field) and PNCI (PNC over infinite field) - according to whether the network-code field (or groups, rings) adopted is finite or infinite. For each of PNCF and PNCI, we consider two specific estimation techniques for dealing with noise in the mapping process. The performance of the four schemes is investigated by means of analysis and simulation, assuming symbol-level time synchronization only.

Turbo code is proposed for underwater acoustic communication (UWA) based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In this paper, performance of turbo code under different modulations are studied and simulated. Simulation results proof that turbo code has a better performances than other method which not use channel code or use convolutional code in higher signal-to-noise (SNR), when using different modulation but has the same frequency bandwidth efficiency.

Differential turbo coded OFDM(DTC-OFDM) scheme was presented, together with a differential soft-detection method for Ka-band satellite communications. DTC-OFDM combines Turbo codes, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and differential detection, which has the advantages of high spectrum efficiency and suppression of multipath fading, jamming and noise. The DTC-OFDM system model and Ka-band satellite communication system simulation model have been found, then we also analyzed the bit error rate (BER) performance of OFDM with N-QAM modulation technique. The results show that DTC-OFDM system gives the best performance compared to convolutional coded (CC) and trellis coded OFDM systems. In the case of 256-QAM, DTC- OFDM system can provide 1 dB coding gain at a BER of 10 -4 compared with TCM-OFDM system and 4 dB compared with CC-OFDM system.

Contrary to real-time services, for data-centric services that are tolerant of latency, transmission with modulation and coding rates selected according to the instantaneous channel condition can increase the system throughput. Nonetheless, the switching thresholds for using different modulation and coding schemes (MCS) highly depend on the channel and system characteristics, and are usually difficult to be determined offline. In this paper, we revisit the adaptive threshold adjustment algorithms proposed previously for adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) systems. By providing an analysis that further considers hybrid ARQ and the channel statistics, we show that the error rate conditions these algorithms use to adjust the thresholds do not necessarily reflect the actual error rates (and throughput) achieved by the MCSs. For systems or applications that have requirements on the error rates, this property is undesirable. In order to offer precise control of the error rates and guarantee that the system meets the desired performance, further conditions and modifications are derived
