In this paper, the throughput maximization and fairness problems in the downlink of a sectored CDMA cellular system with AMC techniques are studied. We focus on maximizing the data rate for users on the cell border. An optimum data transmission with power control allocates the maximum allowable rate to only one user with the highest SINR. However, this throughput maximization rate allocation strategy causes high unfairness. On the other hand, if more service time or slots are assigned to the lower SINR users for fairness, system throughput will be decreased. Thus, we propose the operation of the system in a four time interval duty cycle that increases system throughput and fairness at the same time. In the first interval, users close to the base stations are served, one at a time in every sector. In the rest of the time intervals, for users close to the cell border, an On-Off Synchronous sectored operation is achieved. In this operation only one sector of each cell is allowed to transmit per each interval to only one user. Optimum durations of the time intervals are obtained. The results show that the average data rate at the cell border is increased 75% and the average data rate over the sector area is increased 9.7% relative to the traditional one-by-one transmission in each sector.

This paper presents bit-error-rate (BER) performance results of an upwards-expandable Multidimensional super-orthogonal modulation alternative to M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation wideband code- division-multiple-access (M-QAM WCDMA), suitable for application in next generation WLAN and wireless cellular systems. The unique combination of a M=4-dimensional WCDMA modem configuration and super-orthogonal families of quasi-complementary root-of-unity filtered (RUF) near constant-envelope generalized-chirp-like complex spreading sequences (SO-CE-GCL-CSS), renders a spectrally and power efficient output signal with a data throughput rate equivalent to that of M=16-ary quadrature amplitude modulated (16-QAM) WCDMA, but with the BER performance equivalent to that of BPSK/QPSK in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading multipath channel scenarios, given identical spreading factors and bandwidths.

We study the problem of constructing coded modulation schemes over multidimensional signal sets in Nakagami-m block-fading channels. In particular, we consider the optimal diversity reliability exponent of the error probability when the multidimensional constellation is obtained as the rotation of classical complex-plane signal constellations. We show that multidimensional rotations of full dimension achieve the optimal diversity reliability exponent, also achieved by Gaussian constellations. Multidimensional rotations of full dimension induce a large decoding complexity, and in some cases it might be beneficial to use multiple rotations of smaller dimension. We also study the diversity reliability exponent in this case, which yields the optimal rate-diversity-complexity tradeoff in block-fading channels with discrete inputs.

In this paper, we evaluate packet error rate (PER) performances of high data rate multiband OFDM systems over 1 Gbps in CM 3 using irregular structured LDPC code, simplified LDPC code, and array LDPC code. We also evaluate the decoding complexities of simplified LDPC code and array LDPC code with code rates of R = 3/4,7/8, when belief propagation (BP) algorithm is used. From simulation results, we show that at data transmission rates of 640, 960 Mbps, simplified LDPC codes have the best error rate performances, and at data transmission rate of 1120 Mbps, array LDPC code has better error rate performances than simplified LDPC code. We also show that the order of decoding complexity for array LDPC code and simplified LDPC codes are same.

The adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes has long been adopted at physical layer to combat time-varying properties of the wireless channel. However, transmitting packet over deep fading channel can render extra energy expenditure, due to the incorporation of more error protection or usage of lower modulation mode, which is unaffordable for energy-limited wireless sensor device. To avoid such inefficient energy usage, a simple approach is to temporally buffer the packet when the channel is in deep fading, until the channel quality recovers. Nevertheless, buffering packet can lead to communication performance degradations - communication latency and packet overflow, which should be taken into consideration in sensing applications with QoS requirements. In this paper, by using previously proposed discrete time queuing model, we analyze the effects of Rayleigh fading on the sensor communication system, and propose a cross-layer design on power aware communication of sensor device. Specifically, in such channel adaptive system, each sensor can judiciously accesses the medium according to the channel condition, traffic load, and buffer variation. Simulation and analytical results indicate that, such cross-layer design can lead to energy conservation by as much as 30-40 per cent.

Cognitive radios sense the radio spectrum in order to find unused frequency bands and use them in an agile manner. Transmission by the primary user must be detected reliably even in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime and in the face of shadowing and fading. Communication signals are typically cyclostationary, and have many periodic statistical properties related to the symbol rate, the coding and modulation schemes as well as the guard periods, for example. These properties can be exploited in designing a detector, and for distinguishing between the primary and secondary users' signals. In this paper, a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) for detecting the presence of cyclostationarity using multiple cyclic frequencies is proposed. Distributed decision making is employed by combining the quantized local test statistics from many secondary users. User cooperation allows for mitigating the effects of shadowing and provides a larger footprint for the cognitive radio system. Simulation examples demonstrate the resulting performance gains in the low SNR regime and the benefits of cooperative detection.

In this paper we analyze the average delay and total energy consumption of a hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) system taking into account the energy of the transmitter and receiver. We use the random coding bound and cutoff rate in our analysis. We demonstrate that there is an optimum code rate that achieves the minimum delay and energy consumed. To illustrate our analysis, we give examples using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and 8PSK coherent detection over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The results show that there is an optimum code rate that achieves a minimum delay and energy consumed. When the receiver's energy is negligible compares to the transmitter's energy, BPSK has a better performance than 8PSK. The case is reverse if receiver's energy requirement dominates the total energy consumed.

The use of lattice reduction (LR) has been shown to be a very effective method for signal detection in multiple antenna systems. In this paper, the performance of the sub-optimal soft-output maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector with lattice reduction is studied. We propose a polynomial-time method to generate the desired size candidate list in the reduced lattice. This sub-optimal soft-output MAP detector provides a near-optimal performance in uncorrected MIMO systems, but with significantly reduced computational complexity.

Rain and snow can have a distorting effect on Ku and Ka bands signal fidelity resulting in excessive digital transmission errors. This loss of signal attenuation is commonly referred to as rain fade. Rain fade impacts the Quality of Service in wireless and satellite networks. A decision support system is therefore necessary for service providers to accurately predict rain fade and establish mitigation planning by adaptively selecting appropriate power level, coding and modulation schemes. This paper establishes an important component of the decision support system by adaptively computing rainfall rate and rain attenuation at any location on earth using ITU-R models combined with bi-linear interpolation and frequency extrapolation. We also introduce a novel method for accurately determining rain attenuation as a function of frequency based on proceeding results from prediction weather database, since rain attenuation is considered a dominant impairment for wireless signals [1]–[6]. Finally, a three dimensional relationship is proposed for rain attenuation with both frequency and probability to provide decision support system with an accurate view of satellite’s parameters. The derived parameter values, being fed through neural networks and fuzzy systems to improve estimate Signal to Noise Ratio, will enable the decision support system to maintain Quality of Service and Service Level Agreements by adaptively adjusting satellite signal power, modulation, coding, and data rate at unpredictable weather conditions.

There has been considerable research on the design of space-time block codes (STBCs) that guarantee full diversity without sacrificing the data rate. The main challenge is to maximize the coding gain by maximizing the determinant criterion. It is shown that the most of previous STBCs with full rate and full diversity order (FRFD) (e.g. threaded algebraic space-time (TAST) codes) are constructed via a unitary generator matrix. However, the unitary matrix has been represented using only a small number parameters to enable algebraic code design. In this paper, for a 2 times 2 STBC, we use a more general unitary matrix with a large number of parameters for STBC design. We obtain an upper bound on the coding gain and show that the maximum coding gain is attainable only with PAM signaling. Since optimum parameters for the case of QAM signaling is analytically intractable, we search using the genetic algorithm (GA) method. We also use the union bound criterion for code parameter search by GA. Our simulation results show that with both criteria, the optimum code for QAM signaling is the Golden code. The proposed code significantly outperforms other existing STBCs with the gains about 2 dB at a symbol error rate of 10 for BPSK and 4-PAM. The proposed code performs identically to the Golden code for QAM.
