To reduce the size and bandwidth requirement of a frame memory for video compression, a number of memory recompression algorithms have been proposed. These previous algorithms are performed independently of a video compression standard and therefore do not take advantage of the information obtained during the processing of the compression standard. This paper proposes a new recompression algorithm that makes use of the information from H.264 intra prediction results. The proposed algorithm decomposes a frame into 4times4 blocks which are then compressed into 64-bit segments. The result of 4times4 intra prediction is used to select the scan order of the 4times4 block and DPCM (differential pulse code modulation) is performed along this scan order. Then, the DPCM results are further compressed by Golomb-Rice coding. The proposed recompression algorithm is implemented in hardware and integrated with an H.264 encoder. The proposed algorithm improves the average PSNR by 2.9dB compared to the previous work in (Lee, 2003). The hardware cost for the implementation of the recompression algorithm is 28 K gates and the additional latency to read the compressed frame memory is 162 cycles per a macroblock

The authors assume burst Alamouti coded STC CPM (MSK) modulation in MIMO channel as a particular example of nonlinear multichannel modulation (NMM). The NMM has multidimensional constellation waveforms. The major goal is to find suboptimal receiver signal preprocessing that could substantially reduce receiver decoding metric computation complexity with minor degradation of the STC performance. The author introduce linear waveform subspace projector reducing the dimensionality and thus the complexity of the receiver signal processing. The author analyzed the impact of the subspace projector on the code performance in terms of its rank, determinant (diversity and coding gain) and bit error rate. The author found an optimal subspace basis which does not reduce the rank of the code and which affects the determinant and bit error rate by the minimum possible amount.

This paper develops a novel simulation model to characterize the bit error rate (BER) performance of coded orthogonal frequency-division modulation (OFDM) systems affected by Doppler spread. This simulation model, which acts directly in the frequency domain, greatly enhances the simulation efficiency, while maintaining a very good accuracy. By this model, the BER of two of the most popular wireless broadcasting standards, digital audio broadcasting (DAB) and terrestrial digital video broadcasting (DVB-T), has been assessed in Rayleigh and Rice channels. Simulation results show that the delay spread of the channel heavily affects the performance of DVB-T, while DAB is less sensitive to the frequency-selectivity of the channel. Moreover, DVB-T yields better performance than DAB in typical Rayleigh channels, whereas in Rice channels, for high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), DAB outperforms DVB-T.

We explore options for the evolution of WiMedia's OFDM-based UWB Physical Layer to provide 1-2 Gbps. Starting with a brief review of the current 480 Mbps WiMedia UWB physical layer, we consider first 'simple' options for expanding capacity and their limitations. We then estimate the channel capacity of multiple antenna UWB systems and evaluate a range of possible methods to achieve the targeted data rates, including a variety of MIMO-based techniques.

A power spectral density constrained adaptive modulation with frequency spreading orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme is proposed. Our objective is to improve the overall throughput under target packet-error-rate (PER) for OFDM transmission. We investigated the performance of a coded adaptive modulation scheme with and without bit interleaver and apply the results to determine the SNR thresholds of the frequency spreading OFDM scheme. Using these SNR thresholds, we derive a frequency spreading adaptive modulation scheme and obtain its performance. For comparison, we derive an algorithm which provides a tight upper bound. Simulation results indicate that our proposed scheme exhibits more than 5 dB signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) gain relative to the constant transmit power adaptive modulation without frequency spreading in the low SNR region. When compared with the multiband UWB system, the proposed algorithm achieves up to at least 7 dB and 4 dB improvements at the high SNR region and the low SNR region respectively. The transmission ranges are improved by at least 60% for the 80Mbps data rate and 120% for the 480 Mbps.

An ASIC for an integrated microfluxgate sensor uses pulsed excitation, a 2 nd -order DeltaSigma modulator, an LPF and an FIR DAC current generator in a fully-digital field-canceling loop to achieve high linearity over a 120muT DR. A low noise floor of 5nTA/radicHz is measured over a 100Hz BW. This ASIC can be adapted to numerous applications since it is fully programmable. The 9mm 2 ASIC consumes 36mW from 3.3V and is fabricated in a 0.35mum CMOS process.

Survivor error patterns for the (63,57,3) Hamming code are presented. This reduced list of error patterns enables rather efficient maximum likelihood soft decision decoding of the Hamming code and large turbo-like codes whose constituents are the aforementioned Hamming codes. The list of survivor error patterns for the (63,57,3) Hamming code possesses certain properties unshared by the lists of survivors for smaller Hamming codes. Also, we demonstrate that the weight distribution is a powerful means in specifying survivor error patterns for codes other than Hamming codes.

Methods to mitigate interference from ultra wide band (UWB) radio devices into other communication services whose spectra lie within the major frequency band allowed for UWB, 3.1 to 10.6 GHz, can be classified as non-adaptive and adaptive. Adaptive methods began to emerge in about 2002, and a publication on UWB cognitive radio appeared in 2004. The non-adaptive methods for mitigation of interference by UWB first appeared in publications in the middle 1980's, and were mainly on pulse shaping, modulation and randomization methods that will be summarized, with their advantages and shortcomings, in the paper. Examples are pulse position modulation (PPM), which was replaced in about 2002 by bi-phase modulation (BPM), hybrid modulation combining PPM and BPM, DS-CDMA, pulse shapes obtained by constrained optimization methods, forming notches or eliminating a subband in a pulse spectrum, use of spreading codes, etc. Motivated by the urgent need to utilize spectrum more efficiently and maintain the most effective form of communications in changing conditions, adaptive methods, proposed in about 2003 for more flexible and efficient use of the spectrum and minimization of interference by UWB than possible with non-adaptive methods, have evolved to R & D on UWB cognitive radio (UWBCR). UWBCR builds on software defined radio technology, by building intelligence into a radio, to adapt to spectrum availability, activity and detection of clear spectrum, to learn and adapt to waveforms and protocols, and current user needs, thus enabling the choice of the best current form of communication. The paper will summarize how cognitive UWB may be used for dynamic interference cancellation, and enable interference cancellation by producing spectral notches. A number of functions that could be performed by cognitive UWB radio will be described.

The main objective of this paper is to achieve high normalized spectral efficiency (in bits per OCDMA chip) in optical CDMA network transmission. We design a time-wavelength M-ary transmission scheme that uses error-control coding and trellis coded modulation (TCM), optical M-ary intensity modulation and direct detection at the receiver. We use a probabilistic wavelength-time hopping approach, in order to transmit error-control coded and TCM modulated M-ary data directly through the optical channel without using optical spreading sequences. We present simulation results showing that the proposed OCDMA scheme is robust to Poisson and thermal noise. Hundreds of active users can be supported at target BER of 10 -9 and achieved spectral efficiency (1.37 bits per OCDMA chip) is almost twice larger that the best result previously reported.
