This paper presents a design of VLSI architecture for the FEC (Forward Error Correction) decoding system supporting the Chinese National Terrestrial Digital TV Broadcasting Standard (GB20600-2006). The architecture of the FEC decoder includes a time-deinterleaver; a Symhol-to-Bit LLR calculator, a LDPC decoder, a BCH decoder, and a de-randomizer. The FEC decoder supports 5 modulation modes (64QAM, 32QAM, 16QAM, 4QAM and 4QAM-NR), 3 rates of LDPC codes (0.4, 06, and 0.8) and 3 kinds of time-interleaver lengths. The implementation has heen both prototyped in a FPGA board and silicon-proved by a single-chip DTMB demodulator and FEC ASIC chip. For 64 qam, rate 0.6 modes, the FEC decoder can achieve the threshold of visibility (TOV) at 14.2 dB.

A common practice to avoid the attenuation presented in a wireless communication system is using fading mitigation techniques. Examples of those techniques are the adaptive systems. The proposal of this article is about a system that can switch its transmission and reception characteristics according the bit error rate (BER) between the sent and received data. The system (simulated in Matlab) will commute in a certain value that will be established by the user. The characteristics of the system (modulation and coding) are the same of that shown in the 802.16 standard. In this way, an adaptive system was created with two modes: one with only modulation (16QAM) and the other with modulation (16QAM) and coding (Reed Solomon (64,48)). The BER value is established by the user, getting a more efficient system according to the necessities

IEEE 802.16/WiMAX-based broadband and mobile wireless access is expected to be a significant component in the next generation (e.g., beyond 3G, 4G) wireless systems. IEEE 802.16/WiMAX standard, which incorporates several advanced radio transmission technologies such as orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), adaptive modulation and coding, and adaptive forward error correction (FEC), is designed to provide broadband wireless capability using a well-defined quality-of-service (QoS) framework. Therefore, this is a promising technology for wireless services requiring high- rate transmission (in the range of tens of Mbps) and strict QoS requirements in both indoor and outdoor environments. This technology is currently of big interest to researchers and practitioners involved in the design, analysis, installation, and management of mobile broadband wireless access systems and networks. The objective of this tutorial is to provide a complete overview on the IEEE 802.16/WiMAX standard and the current state-of-the-art research on the design, analysis, and optimization of IEEE802.16/WiMAX-based networks. The key technical challenges related to protocol engineering in these networks are described. The aim is to provide a survey on the emerging IEEE 802.16/WiMAX technology rather than an in-depth study on a specific protocol engineering problem. An overview of the different evolutions of the IEEE 802.16/WiMAX standard broadband wireless access (BWA) is presented and the open research issues in protocol engineering (e.g., for radio resource management, mobility support, security) are identified. A comprehensive survey on radio resource management, traffic scheduling, admission control, mobility management, and security mechanisms for IEEE 802.16/WiMAX are provided. A comparative performance study among the third-generation (3G) and the IEEE 802.16-based systems is provided. In this paper, a novel frequency-band coded orthogonal UWB pulse design method based on chirp (linear frequency modulated, LFM) signal is presented. The basic idea of the new approach is that the up-chirp pulses and down-chirp pulses located at different frequency-bands are used to synthesize the orthogonal pulses by coding with pseudo noise (PN) sequence in frequency domain. Auto-correlation and cross-correlation property of the proposed chirp pulses are better than those of other conventional pulses. Furthermore, the new method also improves the efficiency of the instantaneous spectrum and energy of the transmitting UWB signal. In addition, by the aid of cognitive radio technology to adjust the chirp envelope and the frequency-sweeping range at NBI bands, it is can be guaranteed the transmitting signal in accordance with FCC spectral mask and coexistence, interference avoidance with other traditional narrow band system. And simulation result showed that the proposed pulse could reduce the effect of narrow band interference on UWB system with litter complexity.

This paper is focused on the performance evaluation of OFDMA systems under the consideration of frequency correlated subchannel fading. A comprehensive model for the generation of correlated fading processes is proposed for the application in MAC level simulations. In contrast to most works in the research field of OFDMA, with this approach it is possible to conduct performance evaluations which incorporate both the traits of the medium access control scheme and of the physical layer. To approve the importance of considering correlation properties of the subchannels fading in an OFDMA system, a centrally controlled system based on IEEE 802.16 is analyzed in detail by means of stochastic event-driven simulations.

In this paper, iterative detection is applied in the receiver for downlink of both Direct Sequence (DS) and Multi-carrier (MC) code division multiple access (CDMA) systems in the flat Rayleigh fading channels. A joint iterative detection and phase recovery scheme is proposed. Unlike the conventional Bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) structure, the proposed receiver feeds the extrinsic information from soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoder back to update both the adaptive minimum mean squared error (MMSE) correlator and phase locked-loop (PLL) instead of de-mapper. We also investigate how the second-order PLL benefits from the iterative process over the time-varying flat Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results illustrate that the iterative process significantly improves the performance of the adaptive detector by suppressing multiple access interference (MAI). Additionally, the tracking capability of PLL is enhanced by reducing the equivalent noise power.

In this paper we investigate the performance of a trellis code modulated MC-CDMA system as a function of the number of sub-carriers, bits per symbol, information rate and different flavors of TCM over wireless fading channels. Extensive simulations are performed where random data is sent over multi-path Rayleigh fading channels and performance is evaluated for both slow and fast fading channels. Specifically, two ray multi-path channel employing Jakes model is assumed. Meaningful bit error rate (BER) performance curves are generated for a number of scenarios and based upon these results, useful comparisons are extracted and design guidelines provided for the upcoming 4G communication systems.

This paper investigates the influence of channel coding on the performance of a distributed wireless network in which the nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Different coded modulation techniques and antenna systems are taken into consideration and compared, assuming an outdoor environment. More precisely, the proposed study compares the performance of wireless networks adopting convolutional codes, already adopted in the 802.11a physical layer standard, with the performance that may be achieved by adopting more efficient coding techniques. A realistic channel model including Rayleigh fading and Laplacian power azimuth spectrum is adopted, and code performance comparison is performed using both simple switched-beam antenna (SBA) systems and more complex fully adaptive smart antennas (FASAs).

Different schemes about power arrangement and spacing allocation of pilot symbols in cross-layer design are investigated in this paper. The purpose is to maximize the average spectral efficiency at the physical layer accounting for meeting the target package loss probability at the data link layer. The parameters associated with channel state information in cross-layer structure are modified by introducing the channel estimation error. The adaptive spacing is determined according to the channel characteristics and the power is adaptive arranged between the information symbols and pilot symbols by maximizing the modified average spectral efficiency.

In this paper, a proposed technique is used to improve the performance of multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) based fast Fourier transform (FFT). The results are compared with the original technique for MC-CDMA. As a result, it can be seen from the proposed technique that a high performance improvement was obtained over traditional MC-CDMA, where the bit error rate (BER) is widely reduced under the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel characteristics.
