The free-space optical (FSO) systems that are robust in the presence of atmospheric turbulence are discussed in this invited paper: (i) coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), and (ii) coded multiple-input multiple- output (i.e., multi-laser multi-detector or MIMO) concept; both employing low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Two MIMO concepts are discussed: (i) repetition-MIMO, and (ii) space-time coded-MIMO. The second goal of this paper is to discuss the incompatibility that arises from the bandwidth mismatch between RF/microwave and optical channels. We describe two coded modulation schemes suitable for hybrid microwave-optical communications: (i) coded-OFDM as multiplexing technique, and (ii) Q-ary bit-interleaved coded pulse-amplitude modulation. The third goal of this paper is to describe the ultimate channel capacity limits, and to see how close we can approach those limits with proposed coded-MIMO concepts.

We consider minimizing average transmit-power with finite-rate feedback for coherent communications in a wireless sensor network (WSN). where sensors communicate with a fusion center (FC) using adaptive modulation and coding over a wireless fading channel. By viewing the coherent WSN setup as a distributed space-time multi-input single-output (MISO) system, we develop beamforming and resource allocation strategies and design optimal quantizers when the sensors only have available quantized (Q-) channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) through a finite-rate feedback channel. Numerical results reveal that our novel design based on Q-CSIT yields significant power savings even for a small number of feedback bits.

A new UWB (ultra-wideband) modulation scheme called L-ary UWB-TH-AMPPM (Time hopping Ambipolar multi-pulse position modulation) was proposed to get a better UWB communication performance, and the ECWC (extending constant weight code) was introduced to construct the AMPPM signal. The comparison between AMPPM, SPPM (single pulse position modulation) and BPPM (biorthogonal pulse position modulation) was given in four aspects which are data rate, power efficiency, bandwidth efficiency and probability of symbol error respectively. Theory analysis and numerical results show that when the ECWC is chosen rightly, MPPM can achieve better UWB communication performance than both of the SPPM and BPPM under the same condition.

In this paper, we report a general and simple differential modulation scheme that can be applied to both partial-diversity quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes and full-diversity quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes for four transmit antennas. The differential encoding and decoding can be simplified to differential Alamouti codes by grouping the signals in the transmitted matrix and decoupling the detection of data symbols, respectively. For the codes with partial transmit diversity, the new scheme can achieve constant amplitude of transmitted signals, and avoid signal constellation expansion, and it has a linear signal detector with very low complexity. Simulation results show that these partial-diversity codes can provide very useful results at low SNR for current communication systems. For the codes with full transmit diversity achieved by constellation rotation, our scheme has performance equal to the best full-rate quasi-orthogonal schemes previously described in the literature with a simpler detector.

This paper concerns the multiple access performance of spreading codes used in the downlink of multicar- rier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA). Complex-valued spreading codes, particularly polyphase codes, are investigated based on a system model in which modulation formats, equalization/combining schemes, and fading statistics are general. Different from previous approaches, we pay special attention to the influence of channel correlation on the performance of spreading codes and try to take advantage of the channel correlation in the design of spreading codes. We begin by considering a worst-case frequency-selective fading channel characterized by independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) fading for all subcarriers. Unitary polyphase spreading codes are proven to be optimal among all polyphase codes for the i.i.d. fading channel. Next, optimal spreading codes for a two-user case are derived analytically. We proceed to consider a block-wise correlated fading channel model. We propose a class of channel-correlation- matched Kronecker-product unitary spreading codes, which can exploit the channel correlation, thereby reducing multiple access interference (MAI) significantly. Finally, we extend the Welch lower bound to the downlink of MC-CDMA over correlated fading channels and investigate the performance of Welch bound equality codes.

Using a cross-layer approach, two enhancement techniques applied for adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with truncated automatic repeat request (T-ARQ) are investigated, namely, aggressive AMC (A-AMC) and constellation rearrangement (CoRe). Aggressive AMC selects the appropriate modulation and coding schemes (MCS) to achieve higher spectral efficiency, profiting from the feasibility of using different MCSs for retransmitting a packet, whereas in the CoRe-based AMC, retransmissions of the same data packet are performed using different mappings so as to provide different degrees of protection to the bits involved, thus achieving mapping diversity gain. The performance of both schemes is evaluated in terms of average spectral efficiency and average packet loss rate, which are derived in closed-form considering transmission over Nakagami-m fading channels. Numerical results and comparisons are provided. In particular, it is shown that A-AMC combined with T-ARQ yields higher spectral efficiency than the AMC-based conventional scheme while keeping the achieved packet loss rate closer to the system's requirement, and that it can achieve larger spectral efficiency objectives than that of the scheme using AMC along with CoRe.

The performance of maximum likelihood metric for bit interleaved coded modulation scheme used in multiband-OFDM depends on the variance of noise power present in each sub-carrier. It is especially heavily dependent in the presence of strong narrowband interference. In this paper two soft-metrics are proposed which are not dependent on the variance of noise power. It is seen through Monte-Carlo simulations that these metrics have good enough performance in the presence of narrowband interference.

Advance modulation techniques such as differential phase-shift keying (DPSK), differential quaternary phase shift keying (DQPSK) and code-shift-keying (CSK) modulation with balanced detection has been proposed and demonstrated in high capacity asynchronous optical code division access (OCDMA) system using different encoding/decoding schemes to beat the MAI noise and enhance the security.

This paper proposed a PAPR reduction method for BPSK OFDM systems and 16-QAM OFDM systems respectively. The strategy of the algorithms is to use a correction subcode for error control and a scrambling subcode for PAPR control. The transmitted OFDM sequence is selected with minimum PAPR from a number of candidates which form a coset of scrambling subcode for each codeword of correction subcode. In a BPSK OFDM system, the PAPR reduction is obtained by combining the SLM method with binary cyclic codes. In a 16-QAM OFDM system, the PAPR reduction is achieved by combining the SLM with block coded modulation. The received signal of the modified SLM can be decoded without the need of explicit side information and the proposed scheme achieves good PAPR reduction.

In this paper, we propose and analyze an adaptive modulation system with optimal turbo coded V-BLAST (vertical-Bell-Lab layered space-time) technique that adopts the extrinsic information from MAP (maximum a posteriori) decoder with iterative decoding as a priori probability in two decoding procedure of V-BLAST scheme; the ordering and the slicing. Also, comparing with the adaptive modulation system using conventional turbo coded V-BLAST technique that is simply combined V-BLAST scheme with turbo coding scheme, we observe how much throughput performance can be improved. In addition, we apply a STD (selection transmit diversity) scheme to the systems for more performance improvement. The results show that the proposed system applying a STD scheme gains about 1.77 Mbps at 11 dB SNR (signal to noise ratio) compared to the conventional system using 2 transmit and 2 receive antennas.
