In cooperative networks using a decode-and-forward strategy, the multiple relays effectively transmit a distributed space-time code, the performance of which can be severely degraded when timing synchronization among the relays is not assured. Recent work by Xia et al., Hammons et al., and Damen et al. has investigated the design of distributed space-time codes that are delay tolerant, in the sense that full spatial diversity is achieved regardless of relative timing offsets. In this paper, we survey these contributions.

A pragmatic two-level coded modulation scheme based on the direct product of two high-rate single-error- correcting Reed-Solomon (RS) codes is introduced for bandwidth- efficient transmission in power-limited systems. The proposed scheme uses a single code/decoder. Data rate flexibility is achieved by simply varying the number of uncoded bits. A simple two- stage decoding procedure is described that can operate either on hard- or soft-decisions from the demodulator. A study is carried out in order to optimize the bit-labeling strategy and the minimum Euclidean distance of the code. Simulation results show that the proposed coded modulation scheme exhibits a constant gap to capacity regardless of the cardinality of the signal set. Furthermore this gap can be reduced by considering RS component codes defined over large Galois fields.

Law enforcement agencies need the ability to conduct electronic surveillance to combat crime, terrorism, or other malicious activities exploiting the Internet. However, the proliferation of anonymous communication systems on the Internet has posed significant challenges to providing such traceback capability. In this paper, we develop a new class of flow marking technique for invisible traceback based on direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS), utilizing a pseudo-noise (PN) code. By interfering with a sender's traffic and marginally varying its rate, an investigator can embed a secret spread spectrum signal into the sender's traffic. The embedded signal is carried along with the traffic from the sender to the receiver, so the investigator can recognize the corresponding communication relationship, tracing the messages despite the use of anonymous networks. The secret PN code makes it difficult for others to detect the presence of such embedded signals, so the traceback, while available to investigators is, effectively invisible. We demonstrate a practical flow marking system which requires no training, and can achieve both high detection and low false positive rates. Using a combination of analytical modeling, simulations, and experiments on Tor (a popular Internet anonymous communication system), we demonstrate the effectiveness of the DSSS-basedflow marking technique.

The use of turbo-like codes, such as LDPC or turbo codes, over the MIMO channel has recently gained significant interests. In this paper, a computationally efficient maximum- likelihood union-bound framework is proposed for the analysis of the concatenated coding scheme. Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques are an essential part of the IEEE 802.16e-2005 specifications, which form the basis of mobile WiMAX systems. In this paper, we first discuss the tradeoffs between diversity, interference cancellation and spatial multiplexing in MIMO systems, and we compare optimum combining (OC), maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and interference cancellation for different numbers of receive antennas. Then, we focus on the two mandatory MIMO profiles in the IEEE specifications (Alamouti's STC and the 2x2 spatial multiplexing scheme) and compare them when the first is combined with MRC at the receiver. The analysis obtained using the ITU pedestrian B channel in ideal conditions indicates that the two schemes lead to similar performance when they are operated at the same spectral efficiency

Rate adaptation is one of the basic functionalities in today's 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs). Although it is primarily designed to cope with the variability of wireless channels and achieve higher system spectral efficiency, its design needs careful consideration of cross-layer dependencies, in particular, link-layer collisions. Most practical rate adaptations focus on the time-varying characteristics of wireless channels, ignoring the impact of link-layer collisions. As a result, they may lose their effectiveness due to unnecessary rate downshift wrongly triggered by the collisions. Some recently proposed rate adaptations use RTS/CTS to suppress the collision effect by differentiating collisions from channel errors. The RTS/CTS handshake, however, incurs significant overhead and is rarely activated in infrastructure WLANs. In this paper, we introduce a new approach for optimizing the operation of rate adaptations by adjusting the rate- increasing and decreasing parameters based on link- layer measurement. To construct the algorithm, we study the impact of rate-increasing and decreasing thresholds on performance and show that dynamic adjustment of thresholds is an effective way to mitigate the collision effect in multi-user environments. Our method does not require additional probing overhead incurred by RTS/CTS exchanges and may be practically deployed without change in firmware. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution, comparing with existing approaches through extensive simulations.

In this paper we present a new theoretical model to assess the performance of a class of batch scheduling orders in a forward DVB-S2 satellite link. The scheduling order in a DVB-S2 link will determine the order in which IP packets are transmitted to the receivers and thus determines the amount of required padding and sub-optimal transmissions. The validity of the model is investigated by various simulation runs which show a very close agreement with the theoretical model. Using this model we also identify the optimal scheduling order within this class of orders, given that some mild and realistic conditions on the modulation and coding schemes apply.

Recently a soft-output multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detector has been proposed, namely LORD (layered orthogonal lattice detector), able to achieve maximum-likelihood (ML) performance (in the max-log sense) for two transmit antennas, and near-optimal for greater than two, in MIMO-OFDM bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) systems. This paper presents a near-optimal layer ordering technique applicable to the hard-output version of the algorithm, essential to achieve near-ML performance up to high-dimensional MIMO systems. The Euclidean distance metrics are minimized over a constant number of transmit sequences, a property desirable to maintain constant throughput and not guaranteed by the most known sphere decoder. Differently from previous art works, attention is also paid to the optimization of the implementation complexity. Finally, it is also shown how the above mentioned ordering technique should be modified for the soft-output version of the algorithm, significantly improving the performance of MIMO-OFDM BICM systems. Simulations in the realistic context of next generation WLANs (802.11n) confirm this statement.

In this paper, a class of distributed space-time (ST) codes for continuous-phase modulation (CPM) is introduced. The distributed ST codes are designed to operate in wireless networks containing a large set of nodes N , of which only a small a priori unknown subset S sub N will be active at any time. Under the proposed scheme, a relay node transmits a signal which is the product of a diagonal block-based ST (DBST) code (optimized specifically for ST-CPM transmission) and a signature vector of length Nc uniquely assigned to each node in the network. Two efficient methods are presented for the design and optimization of signature vector sets. If a properly designed signature vector set is employed it is shown that a diversity d = min{N s ,N c } can be obtained, where N s is the number of active users. Further, the decoding complexity of the proposed scheme is shown to be independent of the number of active relay nodes. Through the combination of DBST-CPM codes and signature vector sets the proposed distributed DBST-CPM codes allow for power-efficient cooperative transmission, and low complexity coherent and noncoherent receiver implementations.
