In this paper we introduce a novel cross layer design between MAC and physical layers. Our novel design is based on controlling the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) transmission mode at the physical layer according to the queue length of finite buffer at the data link layer and each transmission mode of AMC. The aim is optimizing system performance over a wireless link, preserving the important quality of service (QoS) parameter, packet average delay time. Analytical expressions such as packet drop probability, channel packet error rate, packet loss rate and packet average delay time are derived both analytically and through simulations according to the system and channel parameters. Using these expressions, a constrained optimization problem is solved numerically to maximize the overall system throughput, preserving packet average delay time.

In this paper, we propose and analyze an adaptive modulation system with optimal turbo coded V-BLAST (vertical-bell-lab layered space-time) technique that adopts the extrinsic information from MAP (maximum a posteriori) decoder with iterative decoding as a priori probability in two decoding procedures of V-BLAST scheme; the ordering and the slicing. The result indicates that the proposed systems achieve a better throughput performance than the conventional systems in the whole SNR range. In addition, the simulation result shows that the maximum throughput improvement in each MIMO scheme is respectively about 421 kbps, 545 kbps, and 880 kbps. It is suggested that the effect of the proposed decoding algorithm accordingly gets higher as the number of system antenna increases.

The combined MIMO with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) technology can provide high spectral efficiency and link robustness. While most existing adaptive algorithms focus on physical layer, cross-layer analysis on the queuing behavior of MIMO-AMC systems is necessary, but remains open. In this paper, under the conditions of unsaturated traffic and finite-length buffer, we investigate the queuing characters of two representative categories of MIMO systems, namely the BLAST system and the space-time block coding (STBC) system. We model the service processes of both STBC and BLAST coupled with AMC, which is the most challenging part of the queuing analysis. We observe a new tradeoff between diversity and multiplexing in terms of link layer packet loss rate and queuing delay, based on which we propose a cross-layer design of diversity-multiplexing switching scheme to optimize the QoS of the MIMO-AMC systems.

In this paper, we study a decode-and-forward cooperative diversity scheme for wireless systems using the combination of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). We propose a simple cooperative maximum-ratio combining scheme for the destination which can successfully exploit the full spatial and frequency diversity offered by the channel. Taking possible decision errors at the relay into account, we develop a closed-form upper bound on the asymptotic worst-case pairwise error probability (PEP) of the considered cooperative diversity system which provides insight into the influence of various code and channel parameters on performance. The PEP expression is then exploited for optimal relay placement. Simulation results corroborate the derived analytical results regarding the diversity gain of the system and confirm the effectiveness of the proposed relay placement scheme.

This paper presents a cross-layer approach to jointly design adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer and cooperative truncated automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at the data link layer. We first derive an exact closed form expression for the spectral efficiency of the proposed joint AMC - cooperative ARQ scheme. Aiming at maximizing this system performance measure, we then optimize an AMC scheme which directly satisfies a prescribed packet loss rate constraint at the data-link layer. The results indicate that utilizing cooperative ARQ as a retransmission strategy, noticeably enhances the spectral efficiency compared with the system that employs AMC alone at the physical layer. Moreover, the proposed adaptive rate cooperative ARQ scheme outperforms the fixed rate counterpart when the transmission modes at the source and relay are chosen based on the channel statistics. This in turn quantifies the possible gain achieved by joint design of AMC and ARQ in wireless relay networks.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the coded bit error rate (BER) performance of the bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) transmission with two decoding schemes, i.e., BICM decoding and maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD). We especially focus on the influence of the codeword length on the BER. The simulation results demonstrate that such analytical results are accurate in the signal-to-noise ratio regimes of interest for general modulations and bits-to-symbol mappings (i.e., Gray and non-Gray mappings).

High-frequency (HF) radio communication has been recognized as the primary means for long-range wireless communications since the advent of radio. With its unique features, HF communication continues to be used for a wide range of civilian, government and military applications as a powerful alternative to a myriad of more sophisticated communication systems. However demanding requirements of high-speed data communications impose new requirements on the HF system design and innovative approaches are required. In this paper, building upon the promising concept of cooperative transmission, we investigate the performance of a multicarrier coded HF system with amplify-and-forward relaying. Specifically, we consider orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and demonstrate the achievable diversity through the derivation of pairwise error probability. We also conduct Monte Carlo simulations to confirm the analytical derivations and present performance comparisons.

In this paper, a framework for designing transmit diversity schemes for LTE PUCCH format 1b with channel selection is introduced. The design criterion is to utilize the same number of orthogonal resources as in the single transmit antenna mode while exploiting the full diversity order. It is shown that the code design is decoupled into resource coding and modulation coding. A sample code is presented and its performance is compared with single antenna transmission.

Video multicast over broadband wireless networks suffers from packet losses induced by fading wireless channels and user heterogeneity in channel conditions within a multicast group. A promising solution to these problems is the use of layered hybrid FEC/ARQ for scalable video multicast. However, how to allocate the radio resources to multiple video layers and how to address the cross-layer combination of application layer hybrid FEC/ARQ and physical layer MCS (modulation and coding schemes) for each video layer, is not a trivial issue. We prove that this problem is NP-hard and propose an optimal Error-resilient Video Multicast (ERVM) framework in infrastructure-based broadband wireless networks. To avoid user heterogeneity and feedback implosion, we use a weighted designated user group to send light-weight feedback messages. The ERVM algorithm is based on the dynamic programming method with a pseudo-polynomial run time, and can get the optimal transmission configuration to maximize the expected utility for the designated user group, which is a probabilistic function of the received video rate. Simulation results show that our ERVM algorithm offers significant improvements over the conventional single-layer FEC/ARQ scheme and the layered FEC scheme. Furthermore, our weighted designated user group with light-weight and accurate feedbacks is better than other user feedback schemes.

Transmit power allocation between source and relays is a critical design issue in a cooperative relaying system where source and relays are powered by batteries. In this paper, a low-complexity power allocation method is proposed for a 3-node cooperative bit-interleaved coded modulation system with adaptive decode-and-forward relaying, aiming to minimize the bit-error-rate at the destination. The key novelty of the method lies in transforming the power allocation into a max-min optimization problem which can be solved in a first-order equation with very low-complexity. Computer simulations show that the proposed method outperforms the equal gain power allocation with large margins in different channel conditions.
