We propose novel coding and decoding methods for a fully connected K-user Gaussian interference channel via assigning multiple codebooks (layers) to each transmitter, such that at each receiver decoding interferers partially becomes feasible. Each receiver first identifies which interferers it should decode and which layers of them should be decoded, and then successively decodes a group of layers with a constraint on its group size treating the remaining layers as Gaussian noise. We provide a distributed algorithm that determines the transmission rate at each transmitter also finds the order of the layers to be successively decoded at each receiver. We also consider practical design of a system that employs the quadrature amplitude modulations (QAM) and rateless codes. Numerical results are provided on the achievable sum-rate under the ideal case of Gaussian signaling with random codes as well as on the system throughput under practical modulations and channel codes. The results show that the proposed multi-layer coding scheme with CPGD offers significant performance gain over the traditional un-layered transmission with single-user decoding.

In this paper, a new distributive heuristic algorithm is developed for maximizing the network throughput in adaptive power and rate spatial-TDMA networks. At each step of our algorithm, the link with highest current receive-SINR in its 2-hop neighborhood is included in the schedule for the underlying time slot, configuring its modulation/coding Scheme so that it transmits at the highest feasible power and rate. The winning link announces its power margin to its neighbors. The receivers of unscheduled links calculate the maximum potential SINR at which their link could operate if scheduled next. The next set of winners is then selected. The process repeats until the power margin of transmitting links doesn't allow more additions to the schedule at the underlying time-slot. Simulation results show the performance of the distributive algorithm to be within 5-10% of that exhibited by our recently developed centralized algorithms, while inducing a much lower computational complexity.

Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) using (bi-)orthogonal signals is especially well suited for applications operating in the power-limited regime and require a very low-complexity transmitter and receiver design, such as, e.g., impulse-radio ultra-wideband transmission systems. In this paper, we analyze the capacity of BICM using (bi-)orthogonal signals with coherent and noncoherent detection for the case of lognormal fading and put particular focus on the power-limited or so-called wideband regime. We give analytical expressions for the ratio of energy per bit and noise power spectral density in the limit of infinite bandwidth and the respective wideband slope, and thus, are able to quantify the loss incurred by the restriction to BICM in contrast to coded modulation.

This paper presents two enhancements for improving the convergence behavior of bit-interleaved coded modulation iterative decoding (BICM-ID) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. As typical tree search based MIMO demapping algorithms for BICM-ID are based on the suboptimal Max-Log-MAP (maximum a-posteriori) criterion, the first enhancement aims at correcting the outputs of such MIMO demappers towards the optimal Log-MAP criterion. For the second enhancement, the deterministic annealing technique is applied to the iterative decoding process. Through simulation results, the efficiency of both enhancements has been demonstrated via the decoding performance and complexity.

In order to improve bandwidth efficiency and bit error rate (BER) performance, a new training scheme is proposed for bit-interleaved coded modulation in multiple-input multiple-output (BICM-MIMO) systems. Typically, in a block fading channel, the training overhead used for obtaining channel knowledge is proportional to a power of two of the number of transmit antennas. However, this overhead can be reduced by embedding pilot symbols within data symbols before precoding. The values and positions of pilot symbols are theoretically found by minimizing the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) on channel estimation error. Computer simulations are presented to demonstrate the advantage of the proposed scheme over other training methods, in terms of both the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimation and the system's BER.

In this paper, we propose a new BICM design which considers hierarchical (nonequally spaced) constellations, a bit-level multiplexer, and multiple interleavers. It is shown that this new scheme outperforms previous BICM designs because it exploits the temporal structure of the coded sequence. An analytical bound on the bit error rate (BER) of the proposed BICM scheme in terms of the constellation parameters and the multiplexer is developed for Nakagami-m fading channels. This bound is used to design a BICM transceiver with improved BER performance. Numerical results show that the gains compared to conventional BICM designs depend on the fading parameter and reach 2 dB for a target BER of 10(-7) and m = 5.

Wireless Sensor Networks generally operate under severe energy constraints. In many cases, the networks are star connected with battery-powered nodes sensing data and sending it to a centrally-powered base station, whose energy constraints are more fore-bearing than that of the nodes. In this paper, an approach for energy efficient communication by using different channel codes on the base-station to node link (downlink) and node to base-station link (uplink) is proposed and analysed for such a network topology. This is in effect shifting complexity from the node to the base station while continuing to have the same BER performance. Also the use of more energy efficient modulation schemes are explored.

Modern wireless communication demands reliable data communication at high throughput in severe channel conditions like narrowband interference, frequency selective fading due to multipath and attenuation of high frequencies. Traditional single carrier systems address this set of problems by the use of complex, computationally intensive equalization filters. The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based system, as opposed to single-carrier systems, is considered to be the future of the wireless communication and is being used to achieve high data rate by overcoming severe channel conditions without the use of these complex filters. This paper discusses the problem of Adaptive modulation scheme selection through an OFDM based system over parallel frequency selective fading channels. An adaptive coding scheme is proposed by using Generalized Concatenated Codes (GCC), which have simple structure and are designed in such a way that they are best suited for fading channels. GCC are based on binary cyclic codes. The criterion of the proposed research is to optimize the throughput of a wireless system. Depending on the quality of sub-channels an adaptive modulation selection scheme and code assigning method is proposed. The proposed research combats against channel impairments better than those used in conventional systems by exploiting individual sub-channel condition. Results show better performance in terms of higher throughput by minimizing the bit error rate.

Based on the channel sate information feedback, the performance of multi-antenna systems with adaptive modulation and space-time coding in Rayleigh fading channels is presented in this paper. The fading gain value is partitioned into a number of regions by which the modulation is adapted in terms of the region the fading gain falls in. The fading gain region boundaries for attaining maximum spectrum efficiency under a target bit error rate (BER) and fixed power constraint are attained. Based on these results, we derive the theoretical calculation formulae for the system spectrum efficiency and average BER in detail. As a result, the closed-form expressions for the spectrum efficiency and average BER are obtained, respectively. These formulae will be more accuracy than the existing formulae. Simulation results show that the theoretical SE and BER are in good agreement with the corresponding simulated values.
