One of the advantages of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is the multiplexing gain over single-input single-output (SISO) systems. We consider adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) as a practical technique in achieving the full multiplexing gain of MIMO systems. The multiplexing gain of AMC MIMO systems is analyzed quantitatively, and a practical way of predicting the multiplexing gain of a generic AMC MIMO system is presented.

There have been great efforts to study the adaptive MIMO systems, while all of them concentrate on the systems without channel coding. This paper presents a new adaptive V-BLAST scheme adopting turbo-codes as the channel coding. This new scheme divides the optimization problem into two steps which simplifies the design greatly. Also, through this two-step method, we derive two algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate applications respectively. We combine the bit and power allocation with antenna selection effectively with very low complexity through a new ordering scheme and derive a simplified power allocation algorithm. For adaptive coding, we propose a new metric - Equivalent Capacity SNR, which can indicate the overall channel condition, to select the proper coding scheme. Simulation results show that the algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate both provide very good throughput performance with low complexity and less feedback information.

In this paper, a new design approach for an adaptive modulation and coding scheme, combined with the truncated hybrid ARQ (HARQ) in the emerging broadband mobile Internet access systems, is proposed. The progressive combining gain can be obtained by the number of retransmissions in HARQ schemes, as the target packet error rate can vary with each retransmission. In other words, higher bandwidth efficiency can be achieved by selecting a more aggressive modulation and coding rate set (MCS) at the expense of packet error rate of earlier transmissions, which can be compensated by the progressive retransmission gain in HARQ. Based on extensive simulation for predicting the combining gain in each retransmission, it has been demonstrated that bandwidth efficiency can be improved as much as 5.8dB and 3.3dB, compared with the conservative AMC design approach with truncated HARQ and aggressive AMC design approach with truncated ARQ, respectively

In the evolved UTRA (UMTS terrestrial radio access) downlink, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based radio access was adopted because of its inherent immunity to multipath interference and flexible accommodation of different spectrum arrangements. This paper presents the optimum adaptive modulation and channel coding (AMC) scheme for simultaneously assigned resource blocks (RBs) for the same user when frequency and time domain channel-dependent scheduling is used in the downlink OFDMA radio access with single-antenna transmission. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that, irrespective of the application of power adaptation to RB-dependent modulation, the improvement in the achievable throughput of the RB-dependent modulation scheme compared to that for the RB-common modulation scheme is slight, i.e., 4 to 5%. In addition, the number of required control signaling bits in the RB-dependent modulation scheme becomes greater than that for the RB-common modulation scheme. Therefore, the authors conclude that the RB-common modulation and channel coding rate scheme is preferred, when multiple RBs of the same coded stream are assigned to one user in the case of single-antenna transmission.

There have been great efforts to study the adaptive MIMO systems, while all of them concentrate on the systems without channel coding. This paper presents a new adaptive V-BLAST scheme adopting turbo-codes as the channel coding. Through a two-step method, we derive two algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate applications respectively. We derive a close- form bit and power allocation algorithm which reduces the computation complexity greatly by avoiding exhaustive search. For adaptive coding, we propose the Average SNR mapping method to select the proper coding scheme. Simulation results show that the algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate both provide very good throughput performance with low complexity and less feedback information.

An important aspect of wireless networks is the dynamic behavior, cross-layer design is the central technique to cope with and utilize this behavior. In this paper, we present the cross-layer design for adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with HARQ. For each of two widely used HARQ techniques-chase combining and incremental redundancy, the close-form functions of average retransmission time, average delay and average throughput are derived for a specific modulation and coding scheme (MCS). Based on the derived functions, a novel MCS selection method is proposed. Meanwhile, we give the analysis of how many retransmission is needed.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol are powerful techniques for improving the spectral efficiency (SE) or the error performance in wireless packet networks over fading channels. In this paper, we first consider a discrete-rate M-QAM based AMC scheme and propose a variable power transmission scheme for transmission of packets over block-fading wireless channels. Considering the error-correcting capability of the truncated-ARQ, which depends on the maximum number of retransmissions (N r ), we then optimize the AMC and power control schemes that guarantee the required packet loss rate (PLR) performance while satisfying an average transmit power constraint. Numerical results reveal that in wireless packet systems with limited packet length, the proposed link adaptation algorithm improves the system performance in terms of the SE and the PLR However, this improvement depends on the target PLR and N r When the target PLR is sufficiently small, this improvement will be observed in terms of the SE for small N p however, in the larger target PLR, the improvement will only be observed in terms of the achievable PLR.

This paper deals with throughput oriented adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) techniques combined with cooperative protocols where terminals are constrained by half-duplex assumption and average total network power. We propose a novel hybrid cooperation protocol that switches from cooperative to non-cooperative transmission based on the momentary direct source-destination link quality. Then, we propose an hybrid cooperative AMC mechanism, which combines AMC with hybrid cooperation. Simulation results show that our proposal improves the average system performance and reduces the average cooperation signaling cost.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is a powerful technique for improving the spectral efficiency or the error performance in wireless packet networks over fading channels. In this article, using a fixed number of modulation and coding modes we propose a variable power transmission scheme for transmission of packets over block-fading wireless channels. We obtain the general form of optimal power adaptation and optimum AMC mode switching levels that maximize spectral efficiency under prescribed packet error rate (PER) constraint while satisfying an average transmit power constraint. Numerical results reveal that in wireless packet systems with limited packet length, the proposed scheme provides substantial average spectral efficiency gain when compared to the non-adaptive case. The optimization framework presented in this article would be useful for cross-layer optimization of physical layer in packet networks.

We study in this paper the capacity of the downlink of OFDMA-based IEEE802.16 WiMAX system in the presence of two types of traffic, streaming and elastic. We focus in particular on the impact of Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) as well as inter-cell interference resulting from different frequency reuse schemes. Several performance measures, namely blocking rates, mean transfer time and the mean number of collisions between two OFDMA WiMAX cells, are then derived and quantified. We show that reuse partitioning results in a lower blocking probability for streaming flows in the inner region but a much higher one for elastic flows in the outer region; the overall cell throughput increases meaning that the decrease in the number of collisions improves the overall throughput.
