Delivery of multimedia contents over unreliable channels poses several challenges. In particular, video streaming has strict requirements on bandwidth, delay, and loss rate. In this paper, we propose the integration of several approaches to overcome these challenges. These approaches are adaptive modulation, adaptive channel coding, adaptive playback, and bitstream switching. The proposed adaptive scheme significantly improves the effective channel bitrate. It also accommodates variations in the channel condition and subsequently ensuring uninterrupted video playback.

We consider the local rank-modulation scheme in which a sliding window going over a sequence of real-valued variables induces a sequence of permutations. The local rank-modulation, as a generalization of the rank-modulation scheme, has been recently suggested as a way of storing information in flash memory. We study constant-weight Gray codes for the local rank-modulation scheme in order to simulate conventional multi-level flash cells while retaining the benefits of rank modulation. We provide necessary conditions for the existence of cyclic and cyclic optimal Gray codes. We then specifically study codes of weight 2 and upper bound their efficiency, thus proving that there are no such asymptotically-optimal cyclic codes. In contrast, we study codes of weight 3 and efficiently construct codes which are asymptotically-optimal.

For terrestrial television two television standards exist: The DVB-T standard is currently widely deployed and used in more than 35 countries worldwide. The second one is the emerging standard DVB-T2. It is a revised standard which offers a higher spectral efficiency and requires multiple transmit antennas. DVB-T2 promises performance gains because of improved coding, modulation and multiple antenna technologies. Alamouti Space-Frequency coding in DVB-T2 provides additional frequency diversity, especially in multipath propagation environments. In this paper we describe in a generalized way phase transmit diversity techniques, like CDD and PD. The generalized approach allows to describe both variants, discontinuous and continuous techniques. Furthermore, we investigate achievable diversity gains, which can achieved by the application of the diversity techniques the DVB-T2 standard offers in addition to standard conformable transmit antenna technologies.

Physical-layer network coding is a high-throughput technique for communicating over the two-way relay channel, which consists of two terminals that communicate exclusively via an intermediate relay. An exchange of messages begins with both terminals transmitting binary data sequences simultaneously to the relay. The relay determines the modulo-2 sum of the sequences, which it modulates and broadcasts to the terminals. Since each terminal knows the information it transmitted, it can determine the information transmitted by the other terminal by subtracting its own information from the broadcast signal. Prior work on the topic of physical-layer network coding has assumed that the signals transmitted by the two terminals arrive at the relay with perfectly aligned phases, permitting coherent reception. In this paper, we relax the assumption of aligned phases and consider noncoherent reception of binary continuous-phase frequency-shift keying signals. A derivation of the relay receiver is given for varying amounts of channel state information, and results are provided showing the error performance of the proposed system without an outer error-correcting code and with an outer turbo code.

In this paper, the optimal design problem of overloaded code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems is examined. Unlike previous results for chip or symbol synchronous systems, a continuous-time, band-limited, additive white Gaussian noise channel is considered for the multiple-access communications. First, non-information theoretic results are summarized, where the total transmit power is minimized, subject to lower bounds on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the output of the linear minimum mean-squared error receivers. Second, the sum capacity is derived and shown to be the same as that of the optimal frequency-division multiple-access system, where each user's bandwidth is upper-bounded by the cycle frequency of the corresponding CDMA system. As the non-information theoretic results, the geometric procedure called multi-user constrained water-pouring leads to the optimal system that maximizes the sum rate. It is shown that orthogonal waveforms are assigned to oversized users and continuous-time equivalents of generalized Welch bound equality sequences are assigned to non-oversized users. A method to construct an optimal codebook is also proposed to be used in a CDMA signal modulator in each transmitter.

We present in this paper a regularized sparse signal recovery algorithm, referred to as sparse learning via iterative minimization (SLIM), to provide ground moving target indication (GMTI) through multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar angle-Doppler imaging. A slow-time modulation scheme with code division multiplexing is employed to achieve transmit diversity. In this way, we avoid the high correlation properties of orthogonal waveforms and the Doppler ambiguity that is encountered with Doppler division multiplexing schemes. After removing jammer and clutter effects using semi-unitary projections, we show that SLIM, using primary data only, is able to form sparse angle-Doppler images and to provide for accurate target localization.

The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the promising technologies to improve the spectral efficiency, enhance system capacity and mitigate inter-symbol interference in the wireless communication system. In this paper, we aim at the study on adaptive modulation and coding technologies for wireless system over frequency selective fading channel. This adaptive allocation algorithm assigns the sub-carriers. We are applied adaptive modulation technique to each sub-carrier to keep required BER and PER performance. The system chooses modulation among BPSK, QPSK, 16QAM and 64QAM which the estimated SNR of the sub-carrier inhabits. Adaptive modulation can improve communication performance under small SNR. The computer simulation result shows the BER, PER and Throughput performance can be improved under 30 dB of SNR region.

The new DVB-C2 physical layer architecture composing state of the art modulation and channel coding techniques provides superior transmission capabilities compared to existing systems such as DVB-C and DOCSIS. Results of simulations performing signal transmissions under realistic cable channel conditions indicate an increase of some 7 dB in terms of robustness and of up to more than 60 % in terms of spectral efficiency. A broad roll-out of DVB-C2 in cable networks, however, will not only increase the capacity of the networks significantly, it will also provide new operational opportunities for MSOs due to the high degree of flexibility supported. Incorporating the DVB-C2 PHY in DOCSIS and using it for DOCSIS downstream transmission will result in a flexible and efficient broadband communications system.

A novel channel coding scheme using bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) embedded LDPC (BICM-L) is proposed for Hybrid In-Band-On-Channel (IBOC) Amplitude modulation (AM) system (IBOC-AM). IBOC-AM broadcasts digital audio signals simultaneously with analog AM programs in the AM band. Since both the power and bandwidth allocated for digital audio transmission are limited in this application, BICM-L channel coding scheme is introduced in IBOC-AM, which can achieve better coding gains without bandwidth expansion. Compared with using conventional scheme which has adopted punctured convolutional coding scheme, better coding gains can be obtained by using BICM-L coding scheme in IBOC-AM. Simulation results confirm that, the coding gains of BICM-L outperform the conventional scheme with 2-3 dB over AWGN channels. For Rayleigh fading channels, the coding gains outperform the conventional scheme with 5-6 dB.

Network coding is becoming more and more popular in recent years for its ability to improve network throughput and robustness. In this paper, we propose a scheme of joint network coding and channel coding based on Turbo-BICM over multiple-access channel (MAC). The scheme with only a turbo decoder significantly reduces the complexity of system. Moreover, it can offer the best error performance in the high SNR regime. These conclusions are validated by both theoretical analysis and simulation results. Interesting, we also find that a detached scheme, which first operates channel coding then network coding, approaches the upper bound in the low SNR regime.
