Classical systems using hierarchical modulation (such as DVB-SH) involve a "high-priority" (HP) and a "low-priority" (LP) bit stream that are separately and independently encoded before being mapped on non-uniformly spaced constellation points, leading to different levels of error protection. However, an inherent drawback of this scheme is the severe performance degradation of the less protected LP stream. In this paper, we propose a concatenated encoding scheme that mixes the two streams in order to make the encoding of the LP stream dependent on the well protected HP stream. Consequently, at the receiver side, the reliable information on HP bits provided by the HP decoder is naturally involved in the decoding process of the LP stream and acts as "soft pilots". We have exploited this feature inside a soft decoding mechanism in order to improve the LP decoding performance while keeping the HP decoding performance unchanged. Numerical results presented in the case of the DVB-SH standard show that the proposed system outperforms the classical approach in terms of LP bit error rate without a considerable increase in the receiver complexity.

Quality of service (QoS) differentiation is one of the keys to success for WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) networks. Although the IEEE 802.16 standard issued some guidelines to design a QoS architecture, for the most part implementation details are left to manufacturers. Focus in this paper is on channel-aware scheduling policies to be implemented in the WiMAX Base Station for the delivery of downlink data traffic to fixed subscriber stations in a point-to-multipoint topology. This paper investigates on the effect of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes on the performance of the designed schedulers. Evaluation of the scheduling techniques will be based on their ability to provide QoS differentiation among traffic classes and fairness in the treatment of data flows in the same class. We expect that although AMC can be effectively used to dynamically adapt to variable channel conditions, it is not sufficient to guarantee inter-class traffic differentiation and intra-class fairness unless the scheduler also accounts for compensation of lost transmission opportunities of each single data flow.

In GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) mobile satellite system, subscribers could not be paged when the MES (Mobile Earth Station) is normally out of coverage area due to additional propagation path losses. To alert the subscribers in such situation, a more penetrative and computationally efficient coding modulation is needed. In this paper two kinds of orthogonal coded modulation, which are 6PSK based and BPSK based, are analyzed. Through compared with the common paging channel modulation method, and the performance analysis of them, we conclude that they can increase the SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) of actual transmitted information, which is greatly more than the SNR of data in the common paging channel. To be emphasized, we also confirm the predominance of 6PSK modulation.

This paper presents a novel Multi Pulse Position Amplitude modulation (MPPAM) scheme for time-hopping ultra-wideband (TH-UWB) communication system. MPPAM is combined version of the Multi Pulse Position modulation (MPPM) and the Pulse Amplitude modulation (PAM) where the information is conveyed in the position and amplitude of multiple pulses. The comparison between PAM and Pulse Position modulation (PPM) was given in aspect of symbol error probability over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. It is shown that with proper selection of the amplitude level numbers, pulses and time slots can be achieved better performances at the cost of the hardware complexity and vice versa.

Hierarchical modulation has advantage that has Improved efficiency. And advanced hierarchical modulation was proposed that enhanced layer symbols are rotated to improve system efficiency. But this conventional hierarchical modulation scheme has some problems such as reduction of minimum distance of inner symbols in constellation that have 2bit error. And only constellation rotation can not optimize hierarchical modulation system. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical modulation scheme that includes constellation rotation and symbol's image value interleaving. System can get SSD(signal space diversity) gain with constellation rotation and interleaving that brings efficiency improvement. Comparing with existing system by simulation, we can confirm excellence of proposed system.

Summary form only given. The ITU-T Rec. G.711 is widely used for narrowband telephony applications, including PSTN/GSTN and packet-based network applications such as VoIP, and has been used for many decades because of its proven voice quality, ubiquity, and utility. ITU has just established a lossless coding technology for G.711 encoded payloads, ITU-T Rec. G.711.0-Lossless compression of G.711 pulse code modulation. This paper introduces some coding technologies proposed and applied to the G.711.0 codec, such as Plus-Minus zero mapping for the mapped domain linear predictive coding and escaped-Huffman coding combined with adaptive recursive Rice coding for lossless compression of the prediction residual. The proposed and conventional algorithms were implemented and the coding performances of the codec were evaluated using large speech corpus in various conditions in terms of the computational complexity/compression performance trade-off. Since the distribution of the prediction residual signal sometimes does not follow the expected Laplacian PDF model of Rice coding, E-Huffman coding can improve the compression performance for relatively smaller Rice quotients of residual and Recursive Rice coding can improve the compression performance for relatively larger Rice quotients of residual. It is shown that the PM zero mapping improves the compression performance by 0.2% for ?-law input. The E-Huffman coding combined with adaptive recursive Rice coding improves the compression by 0.16% while the complexity was increased by 0.046 WMOPS for the encoder/decoder pair, averaged for all test conditions, compare to the conventional Rice coding scheme. The worst-case complexity was increased by 0.079 WMOPS. Average computational complexity is 1.071 WMOPS for the encoder/decoder pair and the worst-case complexity is 1.667 WMOPS in total.

In mobile multimedia networks, different traffic classes require various levels of quality of service (QoS). In this paper, we propose a cross-layer design to provide diverse QoS provisions for integrated realtime/non-realtime traffic by jointly taking into account the physical layer, data link layer, and application layer. Specifically, at the physical layer, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is employed to cope with the time-varying nature of fading channels whereas impairments due to queuing effects are considered at the data link layer. At the application layer, realtime and non-realtime traffic are classified into high and low priority classes, respectively, with strict priority levels. The cross-layer scheme is characterized as a discrete Markov modulated Poisson process. Solving the steady state probability of this Markov model readily enables us to investigate several important performance metrics such as packet drop rate due to buffer overflow and packet error rate due to transmission errors and network impairments. Our proposed cross-layer design is verified by comparing the analytical results with Monte-Carlo simulations. Furthermore, it has been shown that the proposed cross-layer design can flexibly guarantee QoS requirements for each traffic class.

In this paper, we newly design a non-uniform QAM signal constellation, which could be appropriately applied for hierarchical modulation. This novel constellation is constructed by a certain number of equilateral triangles and hierarchically divided into two layers; one for MSB and the other for LSB. The advantage of using this constellation compared to uniform rectangular QAM constellation is that the MED for LSB is constantly maintained whereas the MED for MSB is remarkably increased. To this end, we evaluate the performance in terms of SER by means of link level simulation. Consequently, the newly designed constellation does not compromise the modulation performance between MSB and LSB, and the SNR gain of MSB as opposed to uniform rectangular QAM constellation reaches 0.5~0.8dB but without sacrificing the performance of LSB.

In this paper, we consider a downlink resource allocation algorithm in multi-cell Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple access (OFDMA) systems. The resource allocation problem is modeled as a non-cooperative game. We define a specific utility function that can represent the capacity maximizing against co-channel interference in multi-cell. Then we present the resource allocation game that employs an Adaptive modulation & coding (AMC) scheme. The proposed algorithm is to maximize a discrete capacity that precisely characterizes the AMC levels. As a result of adopting AMC scheme, we expect co-channel interference to be more reduced.

In this paper, we study opportunistic multicast scheduling (OMS) in a wireless network with a central base station (BS) broadcasting a common packet to multiple users with different instantaneous channel conditions. Our objective is to minimize the broadcast latency, which is defined as the total transmission time required for all intended users in a multicast group to receive the packet. Based on the instantaneous channel conditions, BS can send a packet at different transmission rates. Sending at a higher rate allows a shorter packet transmission time, but only a limited number of users with sufficient channel quality can receive the packet. To reach all users in a multicast group, the packet must be transmitted multiple times. We can see that the broadcast latency depends on the transmission rate used and the number of transmissions required. In this paper, we formulate the problem of minimizing broadcast latency as a dynamic programming problem, and a close-loop optimal opportunistic multicast scheduling scheme (OOMS) is derived.
