The MIMO-OFDM eigenmode adaptive transmission system (EMATS) is considered as one of the candidates for future high speed wireless communication networks. The system performance is evaluated for frequency-space domain power and modulation coding adaptation schemes on the MIMO-OFDM EMATS based on IEEE 802.11a, and a throughput of about 400 Mbps at SNR of 40 dB is achieved. Furthermore, we propose a hierarchical subgroup adaptation (HSA) algorithm which can drastically reduce the amount of overhead signaling and computational complexity with minimal performance loss. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is validated by computer simulation under the condition of IEEE 802.11n channel models.

Adaptive modulation and coding techniques for global navigation satellite system inter-satellite communication based on the channel condition

Inter-satellite link (ISL) will play an increasingly important role in the next generation of global navigation satellite system (GNSS). The inter-satellite distances in the GNSS vary greatly, resulting in a power loss difference of as much as 20 db. However, there are no reports on promotion of spectral efficiency in inter-satellite channels at present. In this study, the authors propose an efficient utilisation of the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme for ISLs in the GNSS. A novel method, based on inter-satellite distance, is presented for choosing the modulation and coding scheme (MCS). The proposed method provides a convenient way to estimate signal-to-noise ratio of the ISLs in GNSS. This AMC technique is implemented according to two different algorithms. One is the target bit error rate (BER) algorithm based on inter-satellite distance, aimed at keeping the BER below a target limit. The other is the maximum throughput algorithm based on inter-satellite distance, aimed at maximising the data throughput. In cases where the inter-satellite distance is short, simulation results show that, under the premise of the same transmission power, the throughput of two proposed AMC schemes is nearly six times that of a fixed MCS.

The theoretical channel capacity of a switching device is far in excess of that utilized in a binary-coded system. One of the motivations of our research has been the attempt to increase the channel capacity by representing information by the interval between pulses instead of the presence or absence of pulses. A second motivation is the desire to find a practical use for microelectronic devices now under development which may encompass a billion gates in a cubic inch. The third motivation is the similarity between the nervous system and a Time Interval modulation Information coding system (TIMIC). In our initial studies we have utilized an operational element, called "sumister," which is essentially a model of an artificial neuron interpreted as a decision-making threshold device with the ability of temporal and spacial summation and short-term memory. Five basic component networks have been designed, the ON cell, the OFF cell, a conjunctive network, an object-detection network, and an autocorrelation network. These are combined into moving-object detection networks and a metaphase-chromosome detection network.

HIGH-LEVEL modulation AND coding FOR NONLINEAR SATELLITE CHANNELS

Currently, 4-PSK is the prevalent modulation format in use for digital satellite communications. To improve bandwidth efficiency, 8PSK could be used instead, but a higher power would be needed; to improve power efficiency, error-correcting codes could be used, but at the expense of a larger bandwidth. Recently, Ungerboeck [1] has proposed a class of codes in which a constellation of 2M signals is used to transmit information at the rate of log_modulation M bits per symbol, and has shown that coding gains of up to several decibels can be achieved on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with no increase in bandwidth occupancy and a relatively small added complexity. Thus, these codes seem to be particularly attractive for application in the band-limited environment typical of satellite communication systems, provided that the performance gain that they provide on the AWGN channel is not lost over a satellite channel. The goal of this work is to assess the performance of this class of codes when used to transmit 3 information bits per symbol on a band-limited, nonlinear satellite channel. Three modulation formats are considered, namely 16-PSK, 16-QAM, and a 16-ary amplitude-phase keying scheme with two amplitude levels. It is found that 16-PSK outperforms the two other modulation formats, and that the use of these codes can provide a substantial performance improvement even on a satellite channel.

High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is the packet-based data service with data transmissions up to 10 Mbps in WCDMA downlink. For HSDPA, Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) provides the flexibility to match the modulation and coding scheme to the average channel conditions for each user to raise the overall system capacity. There are many methods to estimate the channel quality, and the measurement of the mobile velocity is available for AMC. In this paper, the mobile velocity estimator using W-CDMA uplink signal for HSDPA is proposed. The proposed velocity estimator has robust pre-filter and post-filter to reduce noise influence. And the proposed velocity estimator also has observation block to estimate velocity more accurately under added noise.

This paper presents the system design method to determine the modulation and coding schemes according to the given usage models of single carrier transmission in millimeter wave Wireless LAN systems. Various modulation and coding combinations are compared and analyzed based on the BER performance over both AWGN and fading channels. The effects of hardware impairments including power amplifier non-linear effects and phase noise, etc., are considered as well. The system design strategy provides a guideline for the selection of modulation and coding schemes in practical which can fulfill the realistic system requirements.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and Multicode transmission are to achieve higher rate to fit fast fading channel. Considering these two technologies together is a challenge problem. In this paper, we develop the existing algorithm in[l] to provide better performance under multipath environment, furthermore, we realign all the schemes in order to use the threshold mapping. Simulation results show the noticeable improvement.

MIMO/OFDM is one of the promising technologies to improve the spectral efficiency, enhance system capacity and mitigate intersymbol interference in the fourth generation broadband mobile communication system. In this paper, we aim at the study of a communication system that employs both MIMO-OFDM and adaptive modulation/coding technologies. In this article, the performance of different modulation schemes including fixed modulation/coding and adaptive modulation/coding is analyzed and compared by simulation. We also propose an adaptive modulation/coding algorithm for multiuser MIMO-OFDM system. This adaptive allocation algorithm assigns the subcarriers and bits for users in the system with the minimum total transmission power and targeted bit error rate (BER) based on the time-variant MIMO channel condition. Computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is not only simple but can also have a relative low transmission power compared with the fix BPSK, QPSK and 16QAM modulation schemes.
