This paper describes modern software based flexible measuring systems for analysis of digitally modulated systems. The latest methods for evaluation of modulation parameters using new generation test systems based on PXI modular platform and graphical programming in LabVIEW are demonstrated. Authors concentrate on the most widely used modulation technique used in radio communication systems - QPSK. To achieve the best results, different measurements were performed, like measurement in the time domain, spectral measurements, vector diagram, and constellation diagram. Many results for definition of communication system quality were obtained like r (rho), DC offset, phase error, quadrature skew, IQ gain imbalance, bit error rate (BER), frequency deviation, burst timing measurements, modulation error ratio (MER) and error vector magnitude (EVM).

The outage probability limit is a fundamental lower bound on the word error rate of coded communications systems. It is mainly determined by two parameters: the diversity order and the coding gain. With linear precoding, the maximum achievable coding rate yielding full-diversity can exceed the upper limit given by the standard Singleton bound. However, the effect of precoding on the coding gain is not well understood. This paper analyzes linear precoding from an information theoretical point of view and tries to optimize the coding gain. For discrete constellations, it is shown that constellation expansion together with one optimized precoding parameter is sufficient to approach the best outage achieved by a Gaussian alphabet, thus maximizing the coding gain.

Multiple antenna systems are a promising approach to increase the data rate of wireless communication systems. There exist two main transmission schemes. In BICM systems, modulated symbols are multiplexed on multiple transmission antennas while an outer error correction code ensures the desired quality of service for a given data rate. Space-time trellis codes use a trellis structure to determine the transmission symbols for different antennas. For both schemes, the decoding complexity grows exponentially with the number of antennas and thus the desired code rate. In this paper, we propose the use of space-time bit trellis codes instead which are a concatenation of a bit convolutional code, modulator and spatial multiplexing without interleaving. We present a new near-ML decoding algorithm with an algorithmic complexity which scales only linearly with the number of antennas. This new algorithm can be applied to all schemes where trellis based channel coding is directly followed by modulation and spatial multiplexing. We show simulation results for 16-QAM up to 16×16 transmit/receive antennas with a data rate of 32 bits per channel use. The communications performance lies within 3dB of the outage capacity for a frame error rate of 10 -2 . This is to the best of our knowledge the best result reported so far.

Teaching mathematical intensive engineering based courses to undergraduate Information Technology students poses a great challenge to instructors. In this paper we provide an efficient and effective method for teaching digital and analog modulation to undergraduate students enrolled in an Information Technology program which does not require a strong foundation in mathematics as in the case of an Engineering program. The used approach utilizes Matlab packages, Simulink, and Communication Blockset to simulate analog and digital modulation techniques avoiding the derivation of any mathematics formulations and without coding. A survey that was distributed to Information Technology students who were taught using this approach showed a high level of satisfaction in understanding all modulation concepts.

Future broadband radio systems have ambitious objectives in terms of performance and quality of service. Moreover, new network topologies are likely to be introduced. Therefore, the physical layer has to evolve to meet the new requirements. With this in mind, the filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) technique is proposed as an enhancement to the present OFDM technique. After a brief presentation of the FBMC principle, the adaptation to the radio context is described. Then, the main features which impact radio networks are reviewed with emphasis on the potential benefits of the evolution. The paper provides an overview of the work carried out in the European research project EC-FP7-Phydyas (physical layer for dynamic access and cognitive radio).

T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) is based on the Eureka-147 standard, and provides various multimedia data services. However T-DMB needs additional services and higher throughput while maintaining good reception. Therefore, this paper proposes an advanced T-DMB system with the unequal error protection system, hierarchical multilevel modulation and various coding schemes recently used for recent wireless communication, while maintaining backward compatibility. Based on the simulation results, the proposed advanced T-DMB system achieves a coding gain of 2-6dB over the conventional T-DMB.

The source coding rate allocation problem for the orthogonal multiple-access relay channel with M users and compress-and-forward at the relay is addressed. In case of Gaussian codebooks at the sources and Gaussian channels, we show that the sum-rate-optimal assignment of source coding rate at the relay is given by waterfilling. For general modulation alphabets at the sources and finite-alphabet discrete memoryless channels, the source coding rate allocation problem is formulated using the information bottleneck method, based on which we appropriately modify a standard cutting-plane algorithm to numerically compute an optimal source coding rate vector at the relay.

This paper introduces a new method to transmit digital data through Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) voice channel. A novel algorithm is proposed to design a set of Speech-Like (SL) symbols which leads to design a GSM voice channel data modem to modulate and demodulate data on GSM Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) voice codec which consist of different bit-rates. Designing a set of time-symbols is an off line procedure with the aim of minimizing symbol detection error. This modem is useful in real-time data communication with high priority. The introduced modem encodes data into SL symbols to be transmitted over GSM voice channel and the received SL symbols are decoded back to data.

This paper deals with an experimental measurement of real DVB-S and DVB-S2 signal. As a digital satellite signal source were used a 90cm diametric parabolic antenna in top of DREL BUT destined to satellite ASTRA 3A 23,5° East longitude for DVB-S signal and to satellite ASTRA 1E 19,2° East longitude for DVB-S2 signal. Antenna measurement system Kathrein MSK 200 was used as a test receiver for the measurement with a set top box Humax HD 2000-CI. Finally, obtained results are evaluated, compared and commented.

The paper analyzes power spectral density (PSD) of orthogonal pulse-based signals for time hopping ultra wideband (TH-UWB) systems. Our extensive studies show that the PSD of these signals not only depends on the time dithering code and the modulation schemes, but also on the energy spectral density (ESD) of orthogonal pulses. The different order orthogonal pulses provide different ESD which changes the shape of continuous spectral component with symbols. We show that orthogonal pulse-based signals reduce the dynamic range of amplitude of discrete spectral components. Further, we reduce the dynamic range by adopting longer TH code over orthogonal pulse-based signals. As a result, UWB system performance improves with average transmitted power. The theoretical analysis of PSD of orthogonal pulse-based TH-UWB signal is provided in details and verified through simulation results.
