This paper compares the performance of hard and soft-decision turbo coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing systems with Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) and 16-Quadrature Amplitude modulation (16-QAM). The results show that the soft-decision method greatly outperforms the hard-decision method. Using simplified algorithm for the soft-output demapper in the 16-QAM constellation, the complexity of the demapper is greatly simplified.

Multilevel line coding scheme such as Novel optical line code is applied to combat the effect of cross phase modulation in a single segment dispersive optical link. The analysis is carried out for an intensity modulated direct detection WDM system with various linecoding techniques like NRZ and novel optical order-1 code. Results are numerically evaluated in terms of bit error rate and power penalty at a BER of 10 -9 . Results show that there is an improvement in system performance by 1.89 dB in terms of input power.

Video streaming is one of the most important applications that will make use of the high data rates offered by 4G networks. The current video transport techniques are already very advanced, and the more immediate problems lie in the joint optimization of video coding, AL-FEC, and PHY rate selection with the goal of enhancing the user perceived quality. In this work we provide an analysis of video broadcast streaming services for different combinations of layered coding and AL-FEC, using a realistic LTE PHY layer. Our simulation results show that the scalable content adaptation given by Scalable Video coding (SVC) and the scheduling flexibility offered by the 3G-LTE MAC-layer provide a good match for enhanced video broadcast services for next generation cellular networks. Our proposed solution is compared to baseline algorithms and broadcast systems based on H.264/AVC streaming solutions. We emphasize the system quality improvement brought by our solution and discuss implications for a wide-scale practical deployment.

In this paper, we present a low-complexity joint detection-decoding algorithm for nonbinary LDPC coded-modulation systems. The algorithm combines hard-decision decoding using the message-passing strategy with the signal detector in an iterative manner. It requires low computational complexity, offers good system performance and has a fast rate of decoding convergence. Compared to the q-ary sum-product algorithm (QSPA), it provides an attractive candidate for practical applications of q-ary LDPC codes.

Modern wireless multiuser multicarrier systems (MU-MC) incorporate Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA), Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and Power Control (PC) to exploit multiuser diversity and achieve higher system throughput. In the literature, only a few proposed algorithms deal with the contiguous DRA problem (contiguous collection of resources). This paper formulates this high complexity problem, provides suitable throughput estimation metrics and a simple yet efficient solution. The proposed algorithm allocates in each step a contiguous collection of resources to the pending user resulting in the highest estimated throughput. Simulation results show that in this way, considerably improved performance can be achieved in terms of overall system throughput and spectral efficiency, compared to more conventional approaches.

This paper presents the first analysis on the energy efficiency of LT codes with Non-Coherent M-ary Frequency Shift Keying (NC-MFSK), known as green modulation, in a proactive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) over Rayleigh flat-fading channels with path-loss. The current analysis is based on realistic parameters in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard including the effect of channel bandwidth and active mode duration. We also present the first study on the LT code rate and coding gain characteristics achieving a given Bit Error Rate (BER), and their effects on the total energy consumption for different transmission distances d. Experimental results show that among various channel coding schemes, the optimized LT coded NC-MFSK is the most energy-efficient scheme for distance d greater than the pre-determined threshold level d T , where the optimization is performed over coding and modulation parameters. While for dT, uncoded NC-MFSK outperforms coded schemes.

Nonlinear operations are usually regarded as something undesirable that should be avoided in digital communication systems since they lead to performance degradation, namely spectral widening and decrease in power efficiency, for a given modulations. In this paper we show that the adoption of appropriate nonlinear devices can allow an improvement on the performance of some modulation schemes, either for OQPSK-type schemes (Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) or TC-OQAM (Trellis Coded Offset Quadrature Amplitude modulation). We present an analytical characterization of these signals after a bandpass memoryless nonlinear device. It is shown that an encoder followed by a nonlinear amplifier can be viewed as a serial concatenated coding scheme and the coding gain of such scheme can be improved relatively to the linear transmission scheme.

Superposition mapping (SM) is a modulation technique which converts bit tuples into symbols via linear superposition instead of bijective mapping. Since the resulting signal is often Gaussian-like, it has a good theoretical potential to approach the capacity of Gaussian channels. This paper discusses available SM schemes in a systematic manner, with particular focus on their performance when applied in the framework of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM).

Rank-metric codes are widely used in communications and recently in random network coding. In this paper generalized matrix erasures are defined and an algorithm to correct them is described. However, the main result is that we show that for the common channel model in random network coding only erasures, and no random errors have to be corrected.

We consider a generic bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) systems with an approximate demodulator or log-likelihood ratio (LLR) computer. The performance of a BICM system with optimal demodulation has previously been characterized by Caire et al. in terms of the capacity of an independent parallel-channel model with binary inputs and (continuous) LLRs as outputs, and by Martinez et al. in terms of the generalized mutual information (GMI) where the BICM decoder is viewed as a mismatched decoder. Whereas GMI and capacity of the parallel-channel model coincide under optimal demodulation, they differ in general for the case of an approximate demodulator. Herein we show (i) that augmenting approximate BICM demodulators with scalar LLR correction increases the GMI and (ii) that the GMI of the LLR-corrected system coincides with the capacity of the parallel-channel model with binary inputs and outputs given by the approximate LLRs.
