Parallel Decision-Feedback Decoders (PDFD) use a joint equalization and channel decoding scheme that performs decision-feedback equalization based on each survivor path in the channel decoder. In this paper, we propose novel efficient computation methods to implement the PDFD. We show that, contrary to the belief that PDFD is too complex to implement, standard Viterbi decoders can be modified to implement the PDFD and achieve very high bit-rates.

We propose to use turbo codes for wireless communication systems with multiple transmit and receive antennas over Rayleigh fading channels. We show that a simple, arbitrarily picked, turbo coded modulation scheme with a sub-optimal decoding algorithm outperforms the space-time codes significantly. We present examples for both block and fast fading channels, and observe gains as high as 8 dB at a bit error rate of 10/sup -5/ for large interleaver lengths, suitable for data communications. Furthermore, we show that, depending on the channel model, the turbo code block size can be chosen small enough to be suitable for speech applications, and still offer a significant performance improvement in terms of bit and frame error rates.

We present a frequency-hop packet radio system that is compatible with existing SINCGARS radio equipment and provides three times the spectral efficiency of SINCGARS. The system employs parallel concatenated trellis coded modulation, or turbo trellis-coded modulation, a recently proposed modulation scheme that combines the error control capability of turbo decoding with the bandwidth efficiency of trellis-coded modulation. The encoded data symbols are transmitted using continuous-phase modulation, demodulated noncoherently, and decoded with symbol-by-symbol maximum a posteriori decoding. The receiver also obtains channel quality estimates to aid in the decoding process. The turbo decoder and channel estimates provide resistance to jamming, cosite interference, and multiple-access interference. The packet success rate of the system for a variety of channel conditions is to be studied through simulation.

In this paper, we propose a turbo coding scheme for spread spectrum with bandwidth efficiency. The scheme has a good performance on Gaussian channels and Rayleigh fading channels. We also show that the turbo code is powerful in multi-user environments. In our research, the turbo coded direct-sequence spread spectrum multiple access (DS/SSMA) system with differentially encoded star 16-QAM modulation is investigated in both aspects of error control performance and bandwidth efficiency. The results show that the coding system has a good error performance and spectral efficiency of 2 bits/s/Hz with star 16-QAM.

We derive performance bounds for turbo coded modulation systems over fading channels. We consider the Ricean fading channel model both with and without channel state information (CSI). The bounds are extensions of similar bounds derived for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels by Duman and Salehi (see IEEE Transactions on Communications, p.511-21, 1999). For the special case of a Rayleigh fading channel with CSI we also derive a tighter version of the bound. In addition, we illustrate the use of the new bounds via some numerical examples.

This paper describes a digitally programmable DC-DC voltage down converter (VDC) with a new structure of pulse width modulation (PWM) circuit. The PWM circuit is constructed by a cascaded digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) delay cells and provides two control words to select the operating frequency and duty cycle respectively. The VDC was implemented with a 0.6-/spl mu/m triple-metal CMOS process on 1000/spl times/1000 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ core size. The simulation results show that it can convert +5 V input voltage to +2/spl sim/+5 V output voltage in the 50 /spl mu/s settling time.

We study a direct sequence spread spectrum DPSK multicarrier system combined with the interleaved serial concatenated convolutional codes. This combination of error correction coding and modulation is both powerful and flexible. In this paper, we study the effects of increasing the data rate by transmitting information bits in parallel on the multicarrier channel in a Doppler spread environment. Overall bandwidth is kept constant by decreasing the number of chips per channel symbol as the number of carriers increases. Each subchannel of the multicarrier channel is assumed to be frequency non-selective but fade independently of the others subchannels. Results are shown for several fading cases. In addition, it is noted that the performance gained by iterating more than 4 times is not significant.

This paper presents a method for efficient coding at high spectral efficiency using parallel concatenated trellis coded modulation (PCTCM) with symbol interleaving. The constituent encoders are optimized for symbol-wise free distance, and each has an infinite symbol-wise impulse response. In many cases of practical interest, the optimal structure for these constituent encoders connects the memory elements in a single row. Simulation results show that the performance is as close as 0.5 dB to the constrained capacity.

A novel approach to joint source and channel coding for frequency selective channels is presented. Multicarrier modulation is used to obtain an equivalent vector channel to the frequency selective channel and utilize the linear coding procedure of Lee and Petersen (1976). The use of the block pulse amplitude transmission results in graceful degradation of the decoded signal for low channel SNR. The new procedure shows very good performance for image transmission over frequency selective channels with deep nulls in the frequency response, in the very low channel SNR region. Both the encoder and decoder are computationally very inexpensive in terms of design and implementation, compared to the digital transmission with channel optimized vector quantization. Results for transmission of a Gauss-Markov source and "Lena" image on several typical channels are presented.

We consider adaptive coded modulation for systems using QPSK/8PSK/16QAM constellations with a decision-feedback equalizer for slow frequency-selective fading channels. We investigate several potential channel-quality metrics that could be used to choose the correct coding and modulation scheme. We then present a threshold-adaptive algorithm that is especially useful for channels with a wide range of multipath profiles.
