Demodulation and decoding for frequency hop spread spectrum multiple access (FH/SSMA) systems has been traditionally conducted by conventional single user (non-collaborative) demodulation and error-correcting or erasure-correcting decoding techniques. In this paper, we study the demodulation and decoding aspects of collaborative multi-user reception for FH/SSMA and propose methods which improve the capacity of the system. Since hits from one or two other signals are the most likely events in FH/SSMA, the joint demodulation of two or of three received signals is performed based on likelihood ratio tests. Iterative decoding is used after the demodulation. Results are derived for both synchronous and asynchronous frequency hop systems. MFSK modulation with noncoherent demodulation and Reed-Solomon codes with hard-decisions minimum distance decoding are used. The performance of the proposed multi-user detector in AWGN and flat Rayleigh fading channels is evaluated. Scenarios when all simultaneous FH/SS signals or only a subset of them are collaboratively demodulated and decoded are simulated.

In this paper we propose an implementation method for a single-chip 8192 complex point FFT in terms of sequential data processing. In order to reduce the required chip area for the sequential processing of 8 K complex data, a DRAM-like pipelined commutator architecture is used. The 16-point FFT is a basic building block of the entire FFT chip, and the 8192-point FFT consists of the cascaded blocks with six stages of radix-4 and one stage of radix-2. Since each stage requires rounding of the resulting bits while maintaining the proper S/N ratio, the convergent block floating point (CBFP) algorithm is used for the effective internal bit rounding. As a result the proposed structure brings about the 55% chip size reduction compared with conventional approach.

This paper studies the construction and effects of filtering on the correlation properties of 4-phase sequences that are suitable for the use in spread spectrum multiple access communications. An introduction on the construction methods of these sequences from the set of binary sequences is presented. The effects of filtering on the correlation properties by using Nyquist and constant envelope root-of-unity (CE-LI-RU) filtering technique are also investigated. It is shown that it is possible to achieve better correlation properties by using the latter filtering method while maintaining the perfect constant envelope, which is not possible with Nyquist filtering.

We present a noncoherent coded 16QAM (NC-16QAM) scheme by modifying the trellis-coded 16QAM (TC-16QAM) scheme. Our simulation results show that the performance of the NC-16QAM with noncoherent detection is close to the one of the original TC-16QAM with coherent detection. The NC-16QAM in this paper is an extension of the NC-8PSK previously obtained by Wei and Lin (see IEEE Communications Letters, vol.2, no.9, p.260-62, 1998). A noncoherent initial phase estimation algorithm is also proposed.

We present our study of VoD service optical network using 16-channel DWDM. One approach is a VoD architecture where all video server equipment is centralized and located in the headend. Another option is to deploy servers in several hubs where each has the capability of providing digital VoD service but on a smaller scale. A centralized video server maybe more attractive as it reduces operating cost. DWDM provides a perfect solution for this application because of the high data transport capacity. In a typical DWDM VoD system video programs are stored in MPEG-II format and transported using 64 or 256-QAM modulation. One VoD server in the headend can provide service to several hubs on a fiber ring by allocating wavelengths to these hubs. The number of dropped wavelengths at a particular location depends on the local demand. VoD programs are routed by wavelength to the appropriate hub location. Each wavelength can carry multiple QAM channels. The frequency allocation of these QAM channels depends on the system design. Usually the QAM is inserted in a frequency band above the traditional 50 MHz to 550 MHz broadcast channels. Since QAM signal can be readily decoded by the set top box in customer home, there is no RF conversion required if this QAM signal band originating at the headend matches the set-top box tuner frequency range. At the hubs, the VoD signal can be combined with local channels and the broadcast channels in RF domain and retransmitted for distribution.

This paper summarises some results of a study funded by the Technology Research Programme (TRP) of the European Space Agency (ESA). The study was undertaken by Systems Engineering and Assessment Ltd (SEA) supported by the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA). The contract addressed concepts and architectures for cost-effective calibration transponders for future SAR systems. coding, i.e. deliberately modifying the transponded signal in some way to distinguish it from normal echoes, is of interest for future SAR calibration transponders. Therefore, a number of coded transponder trials were performed and analysed, with the results feeding into the study aspects. The coded transponder trials were performed during 1998, using a transponder supplied by DERA and the Digital SAR Experimental Modulator (DSEM) developed by SEA. The DSEM is a programmable multi-channel digital processor which allows the generation of many different coded signals. The equipment was deployed at Lasham Airfield in England and operated successfully on several ERS-2 passes. A variety of coding schemes was tried, including both azimuth and pulse coding, usually with a number of different coded signals on a single pass. The trials data were processed and analysed by SEA using a modified version of the SEA SAR Processor with decoding functions included. An Advanced Calibration Transponder is proposed which is particularly suited for ASAR and future SAR systems where many more measurements will be required.

Variable dwell-time code acquisition based on multiple-dwell and novel sequential tests is investigated for fast frequency hopped MFSK systems under the effects of white Gaussian noise and band multitone jamming. 1- and 2-dwell tests are of particularly interest for the multiple-dwell tests for practical consideration. Numerical results show that (i) diversity with fast frequency hopping can significantly improve the acquisition performance for 1- and 2-dwell tests, especially in a heavily jammed environment, and (ii) the proposed novel sequential tests significantly outperform 1- and 2-dwell tests and are quite robust to the effects of non-ideal jammer state information. Our analytical results are verified by computer simulations.

The growth and increased competition in the second-generation (digital) cellular communication market has led service providers to improve the speech quality in their systems by introducing enhanced speech coders. Advancements in speech coding allowed designers to aim at toll-quality for these enhanced coders, and investigation of the impact of speech coders on the end-to-end quality of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) is necessary. This paper presents the continuation of a series of studies on the impact of tandem connection of cellular systems, where the quality of the enhanced cellular coders for major systems in use today is studied in the context of PSTN interconnection. A major conclusion of this study is that deployment of enhanced coders in second-generation cellular systems makes possible a substantial increase in quality of the cellular connections when in tandem with other speech coders in long haul international networks.

The possibility of multi-user detection with receiver diversity has gotten a lot of attention lately. In this paper we show how this technique can be realized using OFDM together with bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) as coding scheme. We present an optimum MLSE based metric for the decoding in such systems. Since the optimum metric proves to be rather complex we develop an alternative approach based on the ML estimation of the transmission symbols. Following this approach, with very little additional receiver-complexity, a true multi-user detection of bandwidth efficient QAM schemes in extremely selective environments becomes possible.
