The performance of the concatenated inner trellis coded modulation (TCM) and outer Reed Solomon (RS) code with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is evaluated in a frequency selective fading channel for wireless ATM (WATM). A 512 carrier OFDM is selected to facilitate the transmission of ATM cells of 155 Mb/s rate, in a frequency selective fading channel, while the high gain concatenated scheme is selected for an improved error performance. An interleaver of depth four is introduced at the output of the RS outer coder to randomize the burst errors from the TCM decoder, while a channel interleaver is also introduced to combat the correlated fading of the channel. The investigated concatenated coding scheme is capable of achieving a bit error rate of 10/sup -5/ at an average Eb/No of 14 dB. The result is also compared with that of a convolutional code (CC) with constraint length seven using 16-QAM modulation.

A variety of emerging applications require the design of systems for embedding one signal within another signal. We describe a new class of embedding methods called quantization index modulation (QIM) and develop a realization termed coded dither modulation in which the embedded information modulates the dither signal of a dithered quantizer. We also develop a framework in which one can analyze the performance trade-offs among robustness, distortion, and embedding rate, and we show that QIM systems have considerable performance advantages over previously proposed spread-spectrum and low-bit modulation systems.

Multi-carrier direct sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) with differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation is proposed. Transmitted data bits are differentially encoded before being serial to parallel converted to a number of parallel streams. On each stream each encoded bit is direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) modulated and transmitted using orthogonal carriers. The system is analyzed with a differential detector for a static Rayleigh fading multipath channel. The performance is compared to that of the (PSK) conventional matched filter (CMF) receiver. It is shown that, for the static fading channel, the performance of the differential detector is akin to a (CMF) receiver especially for a small number of identical-bit carriers and small signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). (DPSK) with a differential detector has the advantage of simpler implementation than (PSK) with (CMF) since the exact frequency and phase of the carrier are not required in the differential detector.

In order to evaluate the performance of future S-UMTS constellation, a satellite channel emulator is being developed within the ACTS-SUMO project. With the emulator and the control software developed by the Centre for Communication Systems Research, it is possible to emulate a wide range of satellite constellations (LEO, MEO and GEO) and propagation environments (open, urban, wooded...). Moreover, since the channel bandwidth is equal to 10 MHz, it is possible to use the emulator to evaluate the performance of different modulations, channel coding techniques and multiple access schemes.

In this paper, a direct sequence spread spectrum multiple access (DS/SSMA) system employing serially concatenated trellis-coded modulation (TCM) and continuous phase modulation (CPM) techniques over a flat Rayleigh channel is presented. In this concatenated coded modulation scheme, TCM and CPM can be equivalently regarded as outer and inner codes, respectively. The inner code gives desirable spectral efficiency and coding gain by using a maximal likelihood sequence estimator. The outer code contributes significant gain to the DS/SSMA system. The performance of the concatenated TCM/CPM DS/SSMA system is studied and demonstrates that this DS/SSMA system can achieve significant improvements in bit error probability over the conventional DS/SSMA with TCM and the DS/SSMA system using CPM format under the same conditions.

We studied the performance of the hybrid type-II automatic repeat request (ARQ) system on Rayleigh fading channels. This system is based on high rate optimized rate compatible punctured convolutional (HRO-RCPC) codes combined with simple repetition coder. The performance is investigated for different packet sizes and constraint lengths of the convolutional encoder. Additionally the effect of packet size on the performance in different fading environments is studied in more detail. We have also studied the performance of the HRO-RCPC codes combined with optimized rate compatible repetition convolutional (RCRC) codes as another alternative for channel coding in hybrid type-II ARQ schemes. The simulation results show that HRO-RCPC codes combined with optimized RCRC codes with high parent code rate perform almost as good as the HRO-RCPC codes with simple repetition codes at lower parent code rate. Also a tailbiting decoder using the circular Viterbi algorithm (CVA) is examined for different hybrid type-II ARQ schemes and packet sizes. It is shown that the improvement of the performance due to tailbiting is noticeable only for short packets. For long packets, the sub-optimality of CVA decoding compared to the general Viterbi algorithm (GVA) degrades the performance considerably.

Multilevel coding and bit-interleaved coded modulation using differential encoding and non-coherent reception over flat fading channels are assessed. In order to achieve high bandwidth efficiencies differential encoding is done with respect to phase, as well as with respect to amplitude of APSK constellations. Assuming the channel to be slowly time-varying, encoding and detection are based on blocks of N consecutive symbols (multiple symbol detection). In this paper, we provide the code design and present simulation results. It is shown that only for multilevel coding multiple symbol detection provides significant gains.

Turbo trellis-coded modulation (T-TCM) is one of several techniques for combining turbo codes with multilevel modulation in order to save the bandwidth of the transmission systems. T-TCM was shown to perform very well on AWGN channels, but its performance over frequency-selective fading channels is unknown. In this paper, a system model to investigate the performance of T-TCM schemes over frequency-selective fading channels is proposed. Simulation results show that when an appropriate receiver is available, T-TCM also performs well on frequency-selective fading channels. T-TCM performance is much better than any other coded-modulation scheme for this type of channel.

Bandwidth efficient modulation schemes using Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are proposed for hybrid in-band-on-channel (IBOC) systems that broadcast digital audio signals simultaneously with analog amplitude modulation (AM) programs in the AM band. Since both the power and bandwidth allocated for digital audio transmission are limited in this application, the system cannot afford to add enough redundancy for error control using conventional concatenated coding schemes. We show that by using multilevel RS and convolutional concatenated coded quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), efficient modulation schemes can be obtained for applications such as IBOC-AM broadcasting.

A novel two-stage image compression scheme is proposed. In the first stage, differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) is used to decorrelate the raw image data. Next, an effective scheme based on the Huffman coding scheme is proposed to encode the residual image. According to the experimental results, the newly proposed scheme could significantly reduce the cost for the Huffman table while achieving high compression performance. In other words, the newly proposed scheme provides a good means for lossless compression of high-resolution images.
