A Hearing Aid Chip (HAC3) used in an RF-based, 2 component semi-implantable middle ear hearing device is described. The HAC3 uses a programmable gain amplifier, 2nd-order /spl Sigma/-/spl Delta/ modulator, pulse-width modulator, and class E output stage to accept an incoming audio signal and modulate it for transmission to an implanted passive receiver. The HAC3 employs a unique bias control scheme to improve signal-to-noise characteristics and reduce power consumption. The HAC3 was fabricated using a conventional 2.0 /spl mu/m CMOS process. The circuit functions as expected and test results characterizing HAC3 signal-to-noise and power conserving behavior are presented.

In this paper, we present a noncoherent coded 16QAM (NC-16QAM) scheme by modifying the trellis-coded 16QAM (TC-16QAM) scheme. The simulation results show that the performance of the NC-16QAM with noncoherent detection is close to the one of the original TC-16QAM with coherent detection. The NC-16QAM in this paper is an extension of the NC-8PSK recently obtained by Wei and Lin (see IEEE Communications Letters, vol.2, no.9, p.260-2, Sept. 1998). A noncoherent initial phase estimation algorithm is also proposed.

In this paper, we discuss and present simulation results for the performances of COFDM systems using turbo codes and operating in a mobile radio environment. Results show that the echo power has a much stronger influence than the guard time interval or echo delay. This scheme is shown to be an excellent solution for transmission over bandlimited mobile channels.

We simulated five real-time data compression algorithms on cardiac electrograms to determine which would maximize the efficiency of memory usage in medical devices: Zero Order Prediction tolerance comparison (ZOP), First Order Prediction tolerance comparison (FOP), Differential Pulse Code modulation (DPCM), the Fan, and Second Differences (SD). The Fan and FOP methods ranked first and second for the quality of the compressed waveform. The predicted storage rates for waveforms sampled at 200 Hz with the Fan and FOP were 75 and 95 bytes/s, respectively with compression ratios of 6:1 and 5:1, respectively.

Linear block codes in the complex field can be applied in spatial and/or temporal diversity receivers in order to develop high performance schemes for (almost-) blind equalization in mobile communications. The proposed technique uses the structure of the encoded transmitted information (with redundancy) to achieve equalization schemes based on a deterministic criterion. Simulations show that the proposed technique is more efficient than other schemes that follow similar equalizer structures. The result is an algorithm that provides the design of channel equalizers in low EbNo scenarios.

The paper presents a robust, low-complexity method of transmitting digitally compressed imagery through very noisy channels. The method is applicable to AWGN and fading channels. The proposed method uses a robust wavelet based image coder employing trellis-coded quantization (TCQ), and optimal source adaptive modulation (SAM) which is implemented through time-frequency diversity. We compare the performance of the SAM-TCQ system to that of a system that utilizes unequal error protection (UEP). We show that for the binary symmetric channel (BSC), the SAM-TCQ system performs as well as UEP-TCQ at high bit error rates (BER), and within 1 dB of the UEP-TCQ system at low bit error rates.

We provide analysis of the rotational properties of turbo coded trellis modulation (TTCM) systems in various structures and with different signal constellation rotational symmetries. Design rules for making both parallel and serial concatenated turbo coding systems rotationally invariant are given. Generally TTCM rotational invariance requires that one or two of its underlying constituent finite-state encoders be rotationally-invariant depending on the TTCM system structure. Based on state transition diagrams, we provide a method to construct rotationally invariant constituent trellis encoders for M-QAM signal constellations. We also prove that any rotationally invariant encoder has an underlying state transition graph that falls into the framework of our method.

Wireless broadband access networks are expected to employ packet access with high peak-bandwidth demands. This will impose a significant challenge for frequency reuse, especially for the case of ubiquitous services deployed in a wide area. In this paper, we present simulation results and give insights to the EDGE (enhanced data-rate for GSM evolution) system with low reuse factor (1/3). This system employs link adaptation between a number of modulation and coding schemes as a means for providing several hundred kb/s peak rates in a macro-cellular environment, when combined with multi-slot operation and under favorable channel conditions, and it provides lower rates under different conditions. We also introduce a simple but effective slot-reassignment method for improving packet data throughput. The technique is applicable for any packet-based frequency-reuse wireless systems. It is shown that high peak-rates achieved by link adaptation can provide high throughput, but the user QoS (quality of service) is strongly impacted by the tight frequency reuse. Our proposed method can significantly improve the QoS.

We consider the design of space-time modulation techniques that do not require channel estimates at the transmitter or receiver. We propose a general approach to differential modulation for multiple transmit antennas based on group codes. This approach can be applied to any number of transmit antennas and any signal constellation. We also derive low-complexity differential receivers, error bounds, and modulator design criteria, which we use to design optimal modulators for two transmit antennas.

The Joint UHF MILSATCOM Technical Working Group (TWG) is developing a single integrated waveform that will provide a significant improvement over the two current demand assigned multiple access (DAMA) waveforms now required for operation over 5-kHz and 25-kHz UHF military satellite channels. The integrated waveform will be defined in revisions to the two existing standards. Each revised standard will cover a different protocol layer for the integrated waveform. The revised standard for the lower layer will define the interoperable modulation, error-correction coding and multiple-access protocols required to access the satellite channel. The revised standard for the higher layer will define demand-assignment protocols and requirements for voice and data interoperability. This paper describes the proposed waveform and protocols.
