In this paper, we investigate to relationship between TSCs (training sequence codes) and find optimal pair to decrease the channel estimation error in GSM/EDGE evolution system. For the proposed pair, the cross-correlation between the TSCs is employed. Such TSC codes as in normal symbol rate, high symbol rate, and MUROS (Multi User Reusing One Slot) scheme are considered. To decrease the channel error variance may result in improving the performance of channel estimation.

This paper presents the design of a DVB-T2 modulator algorithm supporting multiple PLP and auxiliary streams. The algorithm works over an asynchronous modulator design, presenting per stream scheduling policies, T2 Frames capacity management, and DFL computation. A software tool was developed in order to create system configurations, validate input parameters, and manage per stream capacity distribution, according to proposed scheduling policies.

In this paper we study bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) transmission using non-uniform (NU) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. For such a NUQAM-BICM transmission, we develop closed-form approximations for the probability density function of the L-values, and we use them to predict the coded bit error rate (BER)performance of the system in the AWGN channel. We then numerically optimize NU-QAM-BICM based on convolutional codes. Compared to uniform QAM-based BICM transmission, and for a target BER of 10 -7 , we reach gains up to 1 dB. When the design is applied to turbo codes a decrease in the error floor can be obtained.

To provide reliable video stream transmission over wireless networks, we propose a cross-layer design model in this paper. In the proposed model, the adaptive modulation and coding parameters at the physical layer, the ARQ parameters at the data link layer and the application-layer forward error correction (A-FEC) parameters at the application layer are jointly designed. Our objective is to maximize the number of correctly decodable frames in a group of picture (GOP) according to the channel conditions and the GOP structure of the video stream. We also present a low-complexity bandwidth allocation algorithm for the A-FEC. The effectiveness of the proposed bandwidth allocation algorithm and the cross-layer design model was shown in the simulation results.

We propose an approach using the parameterization of extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) functions for symbol mapping design in bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM-ID). The EXIT function of demapper is parameterized by a weighed sum of binomial functions. The set of binomial functions is then transformed to an orthonormal basis. Based on the parametric approach, the flatness criterion, aiming at achieving a faster convergence rate in term of number of iterations, can be formulated and symbol mappings can be found by a searching method. Simulation results confirm that good performances can be achieved in terms of convergence rate for fast fading channels when a good (near capacity-achieving) code is employed.

We address in this paper the quality of service (QoS) constrained radio resource allocation problem at the downlink of multiuser multicarrier systems. Based on the trade-off between energy consumption and transmit power within a cross physical and link layer system model, which jointly considers power allocation, adaptive modulation and coding and ARQ/HARQ retransmission protocols, a transmit power constrained energy minimization problem is formulated. The proposed suboptimal resource allocation algorithm is applied to both cyclic prefix based OFDM (CP-OFDM) and filter bank based multicarrier (FBMC) systems. Due to the absence of CP and the better spectral shaping of subcarriers, the FBMC system can exploit more subcarriers and symbols for data transmission and is less sensitive to carrier frequency offset (CFO), as compared to the CP-OFDM system. These advantages further lead to better QoS provisioning and higher energy efficiency of the former, which are demonstrated by simulation results.

In this paper, a two-level frequency-hopping code-division multiple-access (FH-CDMA) scheme, which is flexible in the selection of modulation codes and FH patterns, is studied. This two-level FH-CDMA scheme can be modified by the partition of the modulation codes in order to support more subscribers without increasing the number of FH patterns. The performance and spectral efficiency (SE) analyses show that our scheme supports higher data rate and SE than Goodman's frequency-shift-keying FH-CDMA scheme, making the former more attractive for wireless communication systems.

Hierarchical modulation is a means to better use the overall resources of a given system by superposing, in terms of modulation, a user with better radio conditions on one with inferior radio conditions so as to advantageously transfer some resources from the latter to the former. This in turn impacts the overall performance of the system, which we consider in this work at the flow level, for a realistic dynamic setting where users come to the system and leave it after a finite duration corresponding, for instance, to the completion of a file transfer. We quantify, in this work, analytically and via simulations, the gain thus achieved and propose a new scheme in which users with bad radio conditions are also superposed on ones with better radio conditions so as to enhance the system performance even further.

We present a strategy for the relay sharing in the 2-source relay wireless network with the hierarchical decode and forward relaying. It processes both incoming coded symbols through the minimal hierarchical symbol mapping of the same cardinality as the two individual symbol streams and requires a full (perfect) Complementary Side-Information (C-SI) on the other stream available at the destination. This scheme is known to have an advantage in a rectangular shape capacity region which provides higher sum-capacity than the classical MAC. We investigate the capacity region of the case where the destination has only partial C-SI available through a wireless link. We conclude that the overall finite alphabet constrained capacity region including both MAC and BC phase remains rectangular. The BC phase region is limited by the C-SI link capacity and we conjecture that it obeys (in some cases with some small margin) the capacity product law of the individual relay to destination and C-SI links.

Turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM) has been widely used as a channel coding scheme that achieves near-capacity rate without sacrificing bandwidth. Traditionally, linear trellis codes are used as the constituent encoders in the design of TTCM schemes. In this paper we design nonlinear trellis codes that outperform previously designed code over AWGN and fully-interleaved Rayleigh fading channels.
