Interleaved trellis coded systems with continuous phase modulation (TCCPM) are considered. Upper bounds and lower bounds on the bit error rate (BER) performance are derived for coherent detection on the additive white Gaussian noise and flat Rayleigh fading channels by considering the trellis code, interleaver and CPM modulator as a serially concatenated convolutional code. A coherent receiver that performs iterative demodulation and decoding is shown to provide performance close to the lower bounds developed.

This paper deals with iterative decoding of product codes for high spectral efficiency transmissions. A solution is proposed to adapt the decoding algorithm to the characteristics of the encoder, the modulation and the number of decoding steps. A coding gain of up to 2 dB is then obtained for short codes. For long codes, the number of decoding steps to achieve a specified bit error rate (BER) can be reduced by 1 or 2, which is interesting in terms of decoding latency and power consumption.

We propose a joint transmit and receive optimization scheme for the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing system (also known as BLAST) in a narrowband wireless channel. The optimum solution is found using the minimum mean square error criterion subject to average transmitter power constraint. The transmit and receive filters are shown to decouple the MIMO channel into parallel sub-chanhels. The optimum power allocation policy on these sub-channels is derived.

The application of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) in combination with differential encoding and non-coherent reception over flat fading channels is assessed. Since the labeling plays a central role for BICM we propose a suitable definition of Gray labeling for differentially encoded transmission. We show that for multiple symbol detection such a Gray labeling does not exist. Finally, we illustrate the consequences on the capacity by comparing BICM and an optimum coded modulation scheme.

A problem faced in the military intelligence transmission systems is the protection of highly sensitive real-time video information against multipath fading environments. The technique proposed is the implementation of M-level QAM in association with a novel fade estimation and compensation technique. A half-pilot symbol assisted modulation scheme, HP-SAM, a Reed-Solomon error correction coding as well as a non-uniform partitioning of the signal constellation are used. They result in considerable improvements in the bit and frame error rate performance. It is essential that the video is encoded with high compression rate. In this paper, we also proposed a highly efficient interframe coding technique that uses transmission via separate channels, each having differing degrees of error protection. The main focus of this paper is on the transmission aspects of the scheme and the performance enhancement they can provide.

ARQ feedback in enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) is provided through the use of bitmaps that indicate the receipt status of individual radio link control (RLC) blocks. The use of a robust coding and modulation scheme for the transmission of ARQ feedback limits the length of the bitmap that can be accommodated in a single feedback message to a fraction of the receiver window. Depending on the feedback frequency, round trip delay and the rate of transmission of RLC blocks, incomplete feedback may cause considerable protocol stalling. In this paper, the loss of throughput due to partial feedback is characterized. We also propose various techniques that minimize protocol stalling through the efficient transmission of multiple non-overlapping bitmaps that cover the receiver window. Simulation results show the relative benefits of the proposed techniques.

The European standard for the terrestrial digital video broadcasting, DVB-T, is primarily designated to the stationary and portable reception of video services. In most European countries this standard is already introduced or will be introduced very soon. Because of the increasing demand for mobile reception and the migration of communication and broadcasting, e.g. in the area of multimedia communications, it is of importance for the network operator to analyze the capabilities, but also the limitations of the available DVB-T-system operated in a mobile environment. In this paper we will show by means of measurements and hardware simulations that mobile reception of the DVB-T-system is possible for certain sets of parameters. It turns out that mobile reception in single frequency networks is possible for moderate vehicle speeds if robust modulation schemes like QPSK and 16-QAM together with high FEC protection ratios, e.g. code rate 1/2 and 2/3 are chosen. We found out that in general the maximum speed in single frequency networks (SFN) is lower than in multi-frequency networks (MFN) for the same set of parameters.

Multilevel coded modulation with multistage decoding and unequal error protection is discussed. Three types of unconventional partitionings for 8-PSK and 16(64)-QAM constellations with UEP capabilities are analyzed. Based on the tight upper/approximated bounds on bit error probability, it is shown that more degrees of freedom in the construction of multilevel coding and multistage decoding can be accomplished by introducing asymmetries in PSK and QAM signal constellations. Generalizations to other PSK and QAM constellations follow the same lines.

Two forms of quaternary direct sequence spread-spectrum multiple access, also known as code-division multiple access (CDMA), are described and evaluated. One form uses complex quaternary sequences as the spreading sequences, and the corresponding receiver employs a complex correlator and complex processing. The other form uses a pair of binary Gold sequences as the spreading sequences and the receiver employs in-phase and quadrature processing. The probability of symbol error is evaluated for each system.

Code division multiple access (CDMA) with direct sequence (DS) modulation is a promising multiple access scheme for wireless wideband mobile communications. In this paper, we introduce a simple nonlinear learning algorithm with hypothesis testing to perform blind interference cancellation with uncertainty of the training symbol timing. In addition, the training data set is very small. The method is successfully applied to a CDMA communication system, offering simple and efficient timing acquisition and symbol demodulation. We compare the method with a kurtosis optimization-based fast ICA method, conventional single user detector, and blind linear MMSE detector. It appears that our method is competitive with these and is even simpler than fast ICA.
