This paper investigates link quality estimates for GSM, in order to use them as an input for link adaptation algorithms. Two channel heuristics are extracted from the GSM transmission chain. Their suitability as triggering criteria is assessed by mapping them onto a bit error rate estimate. Then a real bit error rate characterisation is outlined, and the prediction error obtained is compared to the prediction error observed for the bit error rate estimates extracted from the heuristics. Results show that the accuracy of these estimates is similar to what could be achieved if real bit error rate measurements were available, being suitable for application to link adaptation algorithms.

In this work: we report the simulated performance of two digital wireless systems, designed for the transmission on a time selective Rayleigh flat fading channel. In the first system a four-dimensional trellis coded modulation with a non coherent detection method, formed by a differential demodulator followed by a MLSE-type Viterbi decoder, has been adopted. The second system consists of a continuous phase modulation of GMSK type demodulated through a nest coherent detection method formed by a frequency discriminator followed by an estimator based on the Chung algorithm.

This paper presents the selection criteria for trellis codes used with the simple transmit diversity scheme proposed in [1]and reviewed in this paper. The optimum metrics for soft decision Viterbi decoding are derived and the asymptotic coding gains are calculated The design method achieves both coding gain and a diversity order of 2 using 2 transmit antennas and I receive antenna It is also demonstrated that trellis codes optimized or AWGN are also optimal for use in conjunction with the transmit diversity scheme in Rayleigh fading.

Block coded modulation (BCM) schemes have been shown that present useful performance in the sense of significant coding gain without the increase in bandwidth necessarily required by more conventional channel coding. In this paper a novel aproach for enhancing the bandwidth efficiency is introduced, in which multiple-symbole sequences are constructed by several BCM schemes and are mapped with MPSK modulation. This new design, called MS-BCM-MPSK, which for simplicity with double-symbol and 16PSK signalling is simulated over an uncorrelated fading channel, and its performance is compared with some TCM codes. Trellis decoding of the scheme and the structrual developement is detailed.

Time delay spread is an impairment which can seriously degrade the performance of wireless personal communication systems. This paper investigates the effects of time delay spread on unequalized trellis coded modulation (TCM) in multipath fading channels. Explicit bounds for the pairwise error probability (PEP) of TCM over such channels are derived and then used to evaluate TCM performance as well as investigate the delay spread tolerance limit of TCM, including I-Q TCM.

A chip-level detector for optical overlapping pulse-position modulation code-division multiple-access (OPPM-CDMA) communication systems is proposed. The bit error rate of the proposed system is derived and compared to some traditional receivers under the constraints of fixed data rate and laser pulsewidth. These traditional receivers include OOK-, PPM-, and OPPM-CDMA correlators. The throughput limitations of all these receivers are also presented and compared. Our results reveal that a significant improvement in the performance is gained when using the proposed scheme. A throughput limitation of about 7.5 times greater than that of OOK-CDMA correlator is reported on the average.

In this communication we deal with the use of direct sequence spread spectrum techniques for radio transmission in the local loop. We present a direct sequence spread-spectrum system that is being developed to transmit signals from ISDN-U interfaces between subscriber premises and the local station. Some attention is devoted to the IF and RF blocks.

This paper applies a new methodology to different coding schemes for WATM efficiency evaluation. This methodology is based on the separation of error based efficiency (EBE), which is the ratio between the mean raw data rate and the raw data rate plus all overheads associated with error corrections and retransmission of erroneous blocks of data, from queuing based efficiency (QBE), which is the ratio between the error free data rate and the overall channel capacity. We compare between the efficiency of convolutional coding (in the case of binary transmission and high level modulation transmission) and turbo coding. We show that under most value of signal to noise ratio (SNR), turbo coding is the most efficient. We also provide means to support optimal adaptive setting of the code rate and demonstrate the improvement gained by implementing adaptive forward error correction code rate. We further demonstrate that, for certain realistic SNR conditions, the wastage due to retransmissions can be very high.

This paper considers the performance of a reverse link DS/CDMA system with fast closed loop power control algorithms. A predictive power control algorithm is proposed and the performance is compared with the conventional single step-size algorithm. The effects of power control algorithm, power control updating frequency, power control command channel error rate, mobile unit's velocity and increment step-size on the system performance are investigated. Lastly, the optimum power control conditions are found and recommended.

In this article, the performance of some communication systems using chaos synchronization is evaluated and compared. The evaluation of bit error rate is done not for ideal communication channel but for lossy and noisy channels. It is confirmed that a chaos-based communication system has a good performance which may be almost the same compared to conventional analog modulation schemes.
