From the frequency usage efficiency points of view, a novel CDMA with phase continuity QPSK is proposed to achieve such high reliability as shown in free space propagation, and the capability characteristics are examined as a significant scheme for system design. Phase continuity is facilitated by substituting a smoothing function over adjacent frame fringes, in which the function touches the current and next frame phase values with 0th order contact and varies with the steepest gradient just at the center. Simulations are verified to be error free for 2 Mbps transmission over a 7.282 MHz bandwidth by employing defCDMA with phase continuous QPSK without any compensation. The system configuration is also optimized through simulations to be defined by an 11.651 MHz bandwidth, where the necessary Eb/No is -11.5 dB for error free transmission in a 2-ray Rayleigh fading environment of DUR=10 dB with 1 micro second delay over a 2 GHz domain.

A high bandwidth efficiency variable rate adaptive channel coding scheme, ATCQAM, is proposed. Known pilot symbols are transmitted periodically to aid demodulation. Past channel states are fed back to the transmitter with delay. Current channel state is then predicted at the transmitter to decide on the appropriate modulation mode for the current symbol. At good channel states, high level modulation is used to boost up the average throughput. At bad channel states, low level modulation is used to increase error protection. By matching the variable modulation level with a variable rate channel coder, the physical bandwidth is maintained constant. Design issues for the ATCQAM are considered. The effects of finite feedback delay, finite interleaving depth and mobile speed are investigated.

We present new methods to protect maximum run-length constrained sequences against random and burst errors and to avoid error propagation. Specific parallel conversion techniques and enumerative coding algorithms for the transformation of binary user information into constrained codewords are proposed. The new schemes are simple and very efficient. The methods can be used for synchronization in communication systems and for modulation coding in magnetic and optical recording systems.

This paper reports the performance results of an experimental study of a digital communication system designed as an extension of the IS-136 North American digital cellular system. The proposed system has been designed to achieve twice the effective bit rate (up to 16 kb/s end user data rates) for transmission of high quality coded speech in slow fading indoor wireless environments. This study has covered numerous aspects of the system design including the evaluation of the real time voice communications quality. To create as complete a prototype as practical and to provide means for testing over real and simulated RF channels, the implementation included building a 900 MHz ISM band transceiver. We describe the physical layer design, real time experimental platform implementation and measured performance results of the physical layer on the forward link. Modifications to the IS-136 system include replacing the /spl pi//4-QPSK modulation with /spl pi//8-D8PSK modulation, changing the channel coding and modulation approach, as well as adding preselection diversity in the handset receiver. Most of the IS-136 slot and frame structure is preserved. The effects of channel and receiver impairments are documented and compared against theoretical and simulation results. Results are reported in the form of frame error rates relevant for speech communications. We show that a frame error rate of about 1 percent is achievable at a 20 dB signal to noise ratio in a 1 Hz Rayleigh fading environment when preselection diversity is active with a 16 kb/s end user data rate.

Bandwidth efficient phase-coherent modulation techniques such as M-PSK have been made possible over underwater acoustic channels. It is well known that the error probability of the usual linear modulations such as M-PSK over fading channels varies inversely with the signal-to-noise ratio. To increase the slope of the error probability vs. signal-to-noise ratio curve, a diversity technique or an error correcting code may be used. The bandwidth limitations in the underwater channel being severe, we consider trellis-coded modulation for underwater acoustic communications and present simulation results performed to study their performance. Trellis-coded modulation offers a means of introducing diversity without paying in bandwidth.

The block coding scheme which is capable of both peak-power reduction of multicarrier signals and error correction is applied to multipath fading channels. As long as the channel is frequency-selective, considerable coding gain can be achieved, due to the frequency diversity effect. In practice, however, the guard interval is often shorter than the maximum delay spread, which causes an irreducible error door due to the intersymbol interference (ISI). As for coded cases with a short guard interval, the error floor may be still observed, even though the resultant error floor is much lower than the uncoded cases. To remedy this problem, additional Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are concatenated to the system.

We investigate an erasure decoded /spl pi//4 QDPSK multicarrier modulation (ED-MCM) by employing a simple Hamming (block) code. We propose the criteria, i.e. relative minimum receive power test (RMRPT) and relative maximum decision error test (RMDET) for erasure generation and evaluate ED-MCM's performance by applying these tests to the average received power, average decision error, and instantaneous symbol/bit decision errors. At a normalized delay spread of 1/64, computer simulation results indicate coding gains of 6.0-7.0 dB with ED-MCM at a BER of 10/sup -3/. RMDET/RMRPT based erasure decoding yields a 1.5-2.5 dB improvement over the conventional forward error correction (FEC) decoding at a BER of 10/sup -5/. Simulation results at other normalized delay spreads, i.e., 1/32, 1/16 are also obtained. The erasure criteria (RMRPT and RMDET) applied to the average values of received power/decision error yield consistently better performance over error only decoding.

As part of the evolution of the IS-95 CDMA wireless communications towards third-generation technology, high-speed data requirements were defined for both the uplink and downlink in the proposed IS-95-B revision. Although the requirements for the downlink are straightforward, the uplink requirements have considerably larger impact on the handset transmitter and base station receiver design. The impacts on the transmitter are examined, from baseband to RF frequencies. In particular, waveform quality and emissions are examined through high-level simulation to determine the tradeoffs involved implementation of a handset design which can support IS-95-B high speed data requirements for the uplink in the 1.9 GHz band.

This paper studies the design and performance analysis of a noncoherent multiple tone-frequency shift keying (MT-FSK) modulation based balanced incomplete block design (BIB-design) from combinatorial theory. The performance analysis of MT-FSK signals in Rayleigh fading channels with diversity and diversity combining is studied. A noncoherent diversity receiver and combiner is introduced and a union bound expression for the bit error rate is obtained. The results show that MT-FSK with diversity create a multiplicative diversity and therefore performs better than the conventional MFSK system in terms of power and bandwidth efficiency with less complexity.
