Parts obsolescence has initiated an investigation by the Harpoon Program into a new modulator design for the output RF oscillator electron tube (Magnetron). The new modulator design would require full program development including reliability and environmental screening and life cycle determination. Prototyping and production schedule are factors which would also contribute to a lengthy and costly development program. Following the current trend to out-source the new modulator results in the loss of jobs, reduces company revenue, and eliminates the opportunity for RTIS to make a value added contribution. This paper outlines the proposal to keep the current modulator which has proven to be right for the application, and introduces only minor design changes to overcome the problem of parts obsolescence.

In this paper, noncoherent sequence detection (NSD) proposed Colavolpe and Raheli (see Proc. IEEE Int. Conf. Commun. (ICC '97), Montreal, p.21-5, 1997, IEEE Commun. Lett., 1998, and Proc. IEEE Intern. Conf. Commun. (ICC '98), Atlanta, GA, USA, p.438-43, 1998) is extended to continuous phase modulation (CPM). CPM is treated here jointly with linear modulations with intersymbol interference (ISI) since it is mathematically equivalent to a sum of ISI-affected linearly modulated components, according to Laurent (1986) representation. We first consider combined noncoherent sequence detection and decoding of coded linear modulations in the presence of ISI. The results we then extended to the case of M-ary CPM signals. The proposed sub-optimal detection schemes have a performance which approaches that of coherent detection with an affordable level of complexity. The robustness of noncoherent sequence detection schemes to phase noise is also demonstrated.

In this contribution, an experimental bistatic radar sensor at 24 GHz is described, based on phase coded spread spectrum modulation. The sensor uses a code clock rate of200MHz and a code length of 1023, resulting in a range resolution (for two targets) of 1.5 m andan unambiguous range ofabout 750 m. The digital signal modulates a 1.6 GHz signal which then is upconverted to 24 GHz. The received signal is downconverted to an IF frequency of 1.6 GHz and then demodulated with the reference frequency of 1.6 GHz, modulated with a delayed phase code. The setup of the digital part as well as the microwave part of the sensor will be described together with first test results.

Continuous phase modulation (CPM) schemes are examined for use in DS-CDMA spread spectrum systems. Since the power spectra of CPM schemes are narrower than BPSK schemes, a larger processing gain can be used for the same overall bandwidth after spreading. The processing gain, relative to BPSK, that can be used with CPM is calculated. As an example, it is shown that the performance of an MSK system is better than a BPSK system for an equivalent overall bandwidth.

We propose a rate-adaptive indoor infrared wireless communication systems using punctured convolutional codes and adaptive pulse position modulation (PPM) to achieve high bit rate and realize communications even under bad channel conditions with limited transmitter power. The proposed system varies the code rate of the punctured convolutional codes and the modulation order L of L-PPM adaptively according to the channel conditions; when the channel condition is good, low-order PPM and high-rate codes are selected, while high-order PPM and low-rate codes are selected when the channel condition is bad. We analyze the performance of the proposed system on hybrid line-of-sight (LOS) channels. Our results show that the proposed system can achieve high bit rate and realize communications even under bad channel conditions with limited transmitter power by varying the code rate and the modulation order adaptively according to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Dynamic feedback, inversion and LMS estimation have been established for the estimation of an information signal encoded onto a chaotic carrier. The poor resultant SNR/sub sig/ of the recovered signal limits the applicability of these methods. Two novel chaotic coding/decoding strategies based on artificial neural networks (ANN) and radial basis functions (RBF) have been developed and the resultant performance has been assessed. The results indicate that the nonlinear predictor (ANN-RBF-NLP) offers performance independent of the channel SNR (for SNR>10 dB) and offers 4 dB improved SNR/sub sig/ compared to the LMS. Pseudo-chaotic sequences generated using an ANN and estimated in a dynamic feedback manner (ANN-RBF-DF) have resulted in a system with an SNR/sub sig/ that is linearly dependent on the channel SNR and offering for example 20 dB improved SNR/sub sig/ compared to the LMS at a channel SNR of 40 dB.

This paper provides a framework for combining turbo coding with discrete multitone transmission. The combination exploits the superior performance of turbo codes on additive white Gaussian noise channels. A single turbo code is used to modulate all subchannels in the multitone system. Thus, the turbo code is independent of the multitone system and channel parameters. The system yields coding gains consistent with those seen on single carrier turbo coded systems.

We study error correcting codes, which are constructed by using "permutation" and "iterative decoding" in conjunction with "concatenation". These codes include "concatenated codes", "product codes" and "turbo codes" as special cases. We then extend our approach to a continuous channel, by adopting AZD (ambiguity zone detection) at the receiver, which introduces generalized erasures. Iterative decoding can significantly improve the performance of a coded system that contains a channel with memory (e.g., spectral shaping, ISI, multipath delay), modulation with memory (e.g., trellis coded modulation, continuous phase modulation) and/or diversity. Moreover, it is implementable with low decoding complexity and requires a small decoding delay. Using this framework, we propose two architectures for iterative receivers in an existing wireless packet transmission system. These receivers are fully backward compatible with the existing transmitter, have low decoding complexity and delay, and offer a decoding improvement of several dBs.

Block coded modulation (BCM) and multiple BCM (MBCM) combined with an unconventional signal partition are proposed to produce unequal error protection (UEP). The presented BCM and MBCM have the advantage of allowing Viterbi decoding. By increasing the minimum squared Euclidean distance (MSED) and reducing the nearest-neighbor signal sequences, the bit error rate (BER) for important bits is greatly reduced.

In systems that employ source coding, imperfect compression may leave some redundancy in the data at the input to the channel encoder. This paper presents a new method for exploiting that redundancy via joint source-channel maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding. The technique may be applied to systems that employ a variable-length source code in conjunction with a channel code; the decoder uses the residual redundancy that remains after compression to enhance robustness. The proposed technique (applicable to both memoryless and Markov sources) combines the source model, the source decoder and the channel decoder to construct a joint decoder with a conventional Viterbi structure. Simulation results comparing the performance of this approach with the conventional tandem decoding approach are presented.
