This paper studies the error performance of a high-rate bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) system using superposition modulation over a nonorthogonal amplify-and-forward (NAF) half-duplex single relay channel. Based on extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis, we investigate both asymptotic coding gain and the convergence property of the systems under consideration. Analytical and simulation results indicate that the superposition modulation method provides significant performance gains over a wide range of code rates as compared to the optimal precoding scheme developed earlier for uncoded NAF systems. As an illustrative example, it is demonstrated that a high-rate BICM-ID scheme can achieve a coding gain of 1.7 dB, 2.2 dB, and 2.7 dB with coding rate of 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6, respectively, at BER of 10 -4 by varying the number of decoding iterations.

This paper reports on an experimental study about some benefits of cooperative relays in mobile wireless communications. A basic technique for cooperative relaying is implemented in the programmable hardware platform WARP. Using this implementation, measurements are made for mobile car-to-car communications in a suburban environment. Each of three cars is equipped with a transceiver and serves as sender, relay, or destination, respectively. Results demonstrate that cooperative relaying communications exhibit performance gains over conventional direct communications and time-diversity communications in terms of packet delivery rate, bit error rate, and packet error rate. We account for energy fairness by using half transmission power for cooperative relaying and time diversity communications.

The LCD is proposed as a new phase shifter with the advantage that the phase shifting is controlled digitally with no any mechanical moving and rotating elements. Phase shifting can be readily introduced by changing the coded image displayed on the LCD. Hence the LCD's phase modulation characteristics are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. A short overview of different calibration methods is made and a new one is proposed. It relies on cross correlation technology that compare phase shifting image and standard image which grey levels is increasing linearly from the value of 0 to 255. Preliminary experimental results are also presented.

This paper evaluates the major MAC enhancement of IEEE 802.11n to realize high throughput, i.e. frame aggregation. In contrast to existing studies of this enhancement, we analyze the efficiency instead of the mere performance. The results show significant efficiency improvement by frame aggregation. Furthermore, the efficiency analysis leads to important conclusions for system configuration and adaptation and reveals effects which are beyond the scope of existing work. It is shown that the most feasible configuration is to apply maximum aggregation and to adapt the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) instead of the frame size. Furthermore, the efficiency analysis points out that in case the network is not saturated the 20 MHz mode is more efficient than the 40 MHz option.

This paper presents an IntDCT with only dyadic values such as k/2 n (k, n ∈ N). Although some IntDCTs have been proposed, they are unsuitable for lossless-to-lossy image coding in low-bit-word-length (coefficients). First, the proposed M-channel lossless WHT (LWHT) can be constructed by only (log 2 M)-bit-word-length and has structural regularity. Then, our 8-channel IntDCT keeps good coding performance even In low-bit-word-length because LWHT, which is main part of IntDCT, can be implemented by 3-bit-word-length. Finally, our method is validated In lossless-to-lossy image coding.

The performance of bit-interleaved coded modulation-iterative decoding (BICM-ID) based cooperative network is analyzed over Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading channels. The relays are assumed to be operating in amplify-and-forward (AF) configuration. The bit error rate (BER) bounds of single-relay cooperative system with the serial concatenated BICM-ID using the 8-PSK modulations with maximal ratio combining (MRC) at the destination is obtained. For the numerical results of the union bound on BER, moment generating function (MGF) based approach is used and the closed-form MGF expression of the branch metric is derived. The comparisons of theoretical and simulation results are also shown.

This paper introduces a steganographic approach to embed data on compressed speech bit stream in order to hide secret data. This method may be used by any kind of encoded bit stream, but this research concentrates on full rate (GSM 6.10) encoded bit stream. This method allows user to adjust embedded data bit-rate or speech quality. Speech quality is determined by Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) which is an objective testing. The effect of embedding data to each specific bit of GSM Full Rate coefficients, on speech quality has been investigated and the less important bits are selected to embed secret data. Meanwhile for approaching a higher speech quality, the data embedding positions are based on different speech frame types. In other words the proposed technique is modified to achieve a content dependent algorithm.

This paper investigates the error performance and precoder design for a bandwidth-efficient bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) system over a non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward (NAF)half-duplex single-relay channel. A tight union bound on the bit error probability (BEP) is first derived for an arbitrary block length of 2N using a 2N × 2N precoder. This bound provides an useful tool to predict the error performance. Attention is then devoted to the system using 2×2 precoder, where a closed-form expression of the bound is obtained. Based on this expression, an optimal 2×2 precoder applicable to any modulation scheme is developed. Different from the optimal precoders designed for uncoded NAF systems, the derived precoder indicates that the source only needs to send the superposition of signals in the first time slot and being silent in the second time slot in order to achieve the best asymptotic performance. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed precoder not only exploits full cooperative diversity but also offers a significant coding gain over optimal precoders for uncoded NAF systems.

In this paper, coded user cooperation systems are integrated with combined frequency and phase modulation. Frequency/phase shift keying modulation defined over a signal set varying in both frequency and phase is a nonlinear constant envelope multidimensional modulation technique. Error performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by computer simulations in quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels, for both full and selective cooperation cases. The selective cooperation is performed first by cyclic redundant check code control and then by threshold signal-to-noise control. Simulation results show that in all cases, frequency/phase shift keying modulation provides much better error performance than the conventional phase shift keying modulation in coded cooperation systems.

The task of multicast is to deliver common information to all users in a group. However, these users' different channel qualities result in their decoding capabilities being different. Therefore, the multicast design faces a dilemma to convey common information in terms of different decoding capabilities. Motivated by this, a multicast transmission scheme is proposed in this paper. In the proposed scheme, the base station transmitter prescribes the modulation and coding scheme to be used, considering the difference between the better channel-case and worse channel-case users' decoding capabilities, and the adaptive hierarchical modulation promises that each users can process the received signals according to his own decoding capabilities. Compared to the traditional multicast transmission with fixed data rate, the numerical results prove the efficiency of the proposed scheme in exploiting the users' decoding capabilities.
