A systematic way of designing high gain moderate latency multilevel trellis coded modulation is developed. Various multi-level geometrically uniform partitions of 2D-QAM are investigated such that they lead to the 8-way 'Ungerboek' partition which allows up to 6 dB gain over uncoded modulation. The mod-lambda multilevel capacities determine the possible allocation of rates in the different levels, and hence decide overall latency. Group coding techniques are used to design the component codes, and simulations and bounds are provided for the proposed multilevel schemes. The question: "how much complexity is required to achieve an effective coding gain (excluding shaping) of 6.0 dB at BER 10/sup -7/...10/sup -10/ with moderate latency and practical multistage decoding?" is addressed.

Product code that can correct burst-error and random-error simultaneously is a type of new code composed of the simple codes (such as BCH codes). We analyze the performance of product codes, and simulate the cases in which product codes are used to correct error in the mobile channels with different modulation, different data rate and different vehicle speed. We also compare the performance between product codes and interleaved BCH codes, which are both efficient to correct long-burst errors. The conclusion is drawn that the product codes can improve the BER of channels ten times as low as interleaved codes can do.

The combination of multicarrier (MC) modulation and code division multiple access (CDMA) is seen as a very promising technique for the development of high capacity wireless communications. However, while downlink design is possible even with coherent detection techniques, a similar solution for the uplink appears to be difficult. In fading channels, the performance of coherent schemes depends strongly on the accuracy of the channel estimation, as well as the adopted equalization techniques. We consider a novel encoding/detection technique involving chip-level differential encoding, which has been suggested in a paper by Cavallini, Giannetti, Luise and Reggianini (see IEEE Trans. on Commun., vol.45, no.4, p.456-63, 1997), although in a different framework. We compare the performance of this scheme with that of symbol-level differential encoding and coherent PSK.

The enormous installed base of copper in the access network with the right transmission techniques present a huge potential for delivering broadband services to bandwidth hungry customers. Various Digital Subscriber line technologies (xDSL) employ various transmission methods and efficiently utilize the last available bandwidth on existing copper wires. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) delivers up to 6 Mbps to the user. This transmission of 6 Mbps is achieved using sophisticated modulation and compression techniques in a spectrum up to 1.1 MHz, pushing the physical limit on the usable bandwidth in the copper. This technology co-exists with impairments, noise intrusions, bridge taps, and other non-spectrally compatible transmissions. This paper presents an overview of xDSL Technology (which includes ADSL), the test challenges facing ADSL technology, and outlines the three areas of ADSL tests needed to ensure product conformance and cross vendor interoperability.

An average modeling methodology is proposed for deriving PWM programming rules that cause DC-DC power converters to look resistive at the input terminals. The proposed approach was verified by average and cycle-by-cycle simulation. The study investigated the large and small signal response issues and, in particular, the inner loop gain and outer loop response. It is demonstrated that the proposed method can be useful in the design of robust active power factor correctors with low total harmonic distortion (THD).

A method to reduce the effect of intercell and intracell interference in single and multi-cell DS-CDMA systems is considered in this paper. In this method, the users' signatures are not only separated by using different spreading codes but are also partitioned into two or more sub-groups each using an individual constellation for band-pass modulation. Devoting non-overlap parts of the constellation space to the different groups of spreading codes offers capacity enhancement of the system without increasing the processing gain of a standard DS-CDMA system. This transmission method may be combined with joint detection at the receiver to give further performance improvement. By this approach, the complexity of the joint detection techniques can be noticeably reduced.

The primary function of a packet voice gateway is to provide the interworking function between traditional voice telephony links and packet network links. For example, an Internet telephony gateway performs a translation between compressed speech packetized in Internet protocol (IP) and pulse code modulated (PCM) speech over time division multiplexed (TDM) links. Voice gateways are devices which need to perform intricate digital signal processing functions and complex networking protocols. A state-of-the-art DSP-based architecture is presented which meets the challenges with fast industry leading processors, high bandwidth buses, and efficient operating systems support. This architecture gives gateway designers the full power, flexibility and tools to invent highly innovative and price competitive gateways with low risk of obsolescence.

In an effort to transmit information over communication channels that contain both Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise components, military and commercial applications frequently rely upon the use of direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) techniques. Whilst DSSS is an interference tolerant modulation scheme, situations may be encountered when the processing gain offered by the pseudonoise (PN) spreading code is inadequate. Enhancements to the interference immunity of a DSSS system can be accomplished through the use of signal processing techniques that suppress unwanted interference prior to despreading. To date, the majority of interference suppression techniques developed for DSSS applications, have concentrated on improving detector performance exclusively, and perfect synchronisation between transmitter and receiver is assumed. However, the process of PN code acquisition and tracking within a DSSS receiver is arguably one of the most critical functions within the receiver structure since, if it fails to operate correctly, the wanted signal will not be successfully recovered. An evaluation of the benefits of any interference suppression technique within a DSSS receiver would not be complete without considering at least one level within the synchronisation hierarchy. We examine the improvements in receiver performance, when the process of PN code tracking and detection employs a novel wavelet packet denoising (WPD) procedure for a variety of non-Gaussian channel scenarios.

This paper presents an integrated adaptive communication system for speech transmission over time-varying noisy channels for wireless communications. All major subsystems, including variable-rate speech coding, variable-rate channel coding and variable-level modulation are adaptive and configured according to one of several available system operating states. The transition between the system states is controlled by the estimation of reconstructed signal quality. Dual-adaptive DPCM is employed as the speech encoder with both fast and slow adaptation. Transmit power adjustment is performed independently at both ends of the duplex system. Simulation results show that the quality of reconstructed speech signal is robust with respect to various rates on the fading of time-varying Rayleigh channels.
