This paper introduces M-ary multitrack runlength limited (RLL) (d,k) constrained codes for data storage systems. We calculate the capacities and densities of the codes. We have derived a general form of the state transition matrix for M-ary n-track (d,k) codes. Using the largest eigenvalue of the transition matrix, we calculate the capacity and density. The capacity approaches to the limit with a small k constraint compared to single-track codes. One can design some practical M-ary multitrack codes applying the same algorithms for single-track codes.

Adaptive modulation with varying data rate is an attractive scheme to increase the transmission data rate for mobile radio communications. The radio link adaptation (LA) algorithm is an important issue for such a system; however a theoretical analysis of LA algorithms has not previously been carried out. This paper presents a performance analysis of the LA algorithms for slow fading mobile radio channels. The LA algorithms based on the received signal level are studied; the expression of the radio link outage probability and transmission data rate are derived. The simulations were performed in the GSM communication environment, which gave identical results to the theoretical analysis. The results can be used to determine suitable LA algorithms for adaptive modulation under different conditions.

We present new trellis codes based on multiple-pulse position modulation (MPPM) for wireless infrared communication. We assume that the receiver uses maximum-likelihood sequence detection to mitigate the effects of channel dispersion, which we model using a first-order low-pass filter. Compared to trellis codes based on PPM, the new codes are less sensitive to multipath dispersion and offer better power efficiency when the desired bit rate is large compared to the channel bandwidth. For example, when the bit rate equals the bandwidth, trellis-coded (/sub 2//sup 17/)-MPPM requires 1.4 dB less optical power than trellis-coded 16-PPM having the same constraint length.

Ad-hoc wireless networking presents challenges that are different from those of tethered networks in several significant ways. In addition to high error rates and constantly varying channels, mobile communication imposes new constraints, including limited energy supplies, and the need for portability. A system for wireless networking utilizing code division multiple access (CDMA), in conjunction with spread spectrum (SS) modulation is presented. By combining SS, automatic power control and local coordination, a "collisionless," energy and spectrum efficient system can be created which is capable of simultaneously providing high bandwidth and low latency communications. A new routing method, minimum consumed energy routing is evaluated. This new method is shown to reduce latency by 75%, reduce power consumption by 15%, and avoid congestion, in comparison with minimum transmitted energy routing. A simulator, SSNetSim, was developed to simulate the performance of these networks. By taking into account factors such as station placement, traffic patterns, routing strategies, and path loss, network performance, in terms of SNR, throughput, latency, and power consumption, is computed.

This paper presents neural equalizers for the DVD-ROM system and compares them with a conventional linear LMS equalizer. The channel of a DVD-ROM is characterized as a modulation transfer function and is modeled more precisely by including transition jitter which has the characteristics of coloured noise and domain bloom which causes nonlinear ISI of the channel. Experimental results show that the neural equalizer with the structure of multilayer perceptron produces the strong nonlinear mapping capability thus has the best equalization performance in the presence of nonlinearity.

A nonorthogonal binary FSK (BFSK) is considered in frequency-hopped multiple-access communication systems with Reed-Solomon coding. The effect of tone spacing on the average number of successfully transmitted information bits per unit time, per unit bandwidth normalized throughput, is examined in Rayleigh channels. The tradeoff among tone spacing, code rate, and number of frequency slots in maximizing the normalized throughput is examined, keeping the total bandwidth fixed. The optimal tone spacing, code rate, and number of frequency slots in terms of the number of users and E~/sub b//N/sub 0/ is also discussed. The throughput gain attained by using the optimal tone spacing becomes more significant as the number of users is increased.

There has been an increasing interest in providing high data-rate services such as video-conferencing, multimedia Internet access and wide area network over wideband wireless channels. Wideband wireless channels available in the PCS band (2 GHz) have been envisioned to be used by mobile (high Doppler) and stationary (low Doppler) units in a variety of delay spread profiles. This is a challenging task, given the limited link budget and severity of wireless environment, and calls for the development of novel robust bandwidth efficient techniques which work reliably at low SNRs. To this end, we design a space-time coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulated physical layer. This combines coding and modulation. Space-time codes were previously proposed for narrowband wireless channels. These codes have high spectral efficiency and operate at very low SNR (within 2-3 dB of the capacity). On the other hand, OFDM has matured as a modulation scheme for wideband channels. We combine these two in a natural manner and propose a system achieving data rates of 1.5-3 Mbps over a 1 MHz bandwidth channel. This system requires 18-23 dB (resp. 9-14 dB) receive SNR at a frame error probability of 10/sup -2/ with two transmit and one receive antennas (resp. two transmit and two receive antennas). As space-time coding does not require any form of interleaving, the proposed system is attractive for delay-sensitive applications.

A multimode method for trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is proposed to construct various rate TCM schemes. The multimode trellis-coded (TC) 8PSK schemes with rates of 1/2, 4/9, 5/9, 5/12, and 7/12 are demonstrated. These are obtained from the combination of conventional single-mode TC-8PSK with rates 1/3 and 2/3. By investigating the trellis structure and code search, a new multimode trellis diagram is found, which provides a better Euclidean distance property than that by merely combining optimum single-mode trellis diagrams. As for bit error rate (BER) performances, the BER expression is derived and estimated for multimode TCM schemes.

A multi-bit sigma-delta modulator with interstage feedback is described. The structure employs a single-bit quantizer in the main sigma-delta modulator and a multi-bit quantizer in the feed-forward path with its error fed back to the main modulator. It combines the advantages of sigma-delta modulator and pipeline A/D converters. This system topology offers an additional noise shaping factor to the error of the multi-bit quantizer.

The effect of nonlinear amplification on CDMA waveforms is investigated. Variations in the gain of the power amplifier (PA) in response to changes in the input power are used as a measure of the nonlinearity. The relationship between Walsh code selection, data sequences, PN sequences, and the wave-shaping filter in the generation of PA gain errors is discussed. An approach for reducing spectral regrowth by introducing correlations between data sequences within different Walsh code channels is proposed.
