In this work, we propose a concatenated coding scheme with iterative decoding for a bit-shift channel. In more detail, we consider the serial concatenation of an outer error-correcting code with an inner modulation code, possibly preceded by an accumulator to improve iterative decoding performance. The bit-shift channel was originally proposed for magnetic and optical recoding channels, but has recently been popular for inductively coupled channels. In particular, we search for optimal encoder mappings from an iterative decoding perspective for the inner modulation code, which has been designed to be single bit-shift error-correcting and also to have large average power. This is important in inductively coupled channels, since the receiver (or tag) gets its entire power from the received signal, and the information should be modulated in a way that maximizes the power transferred to the tag.

Availability of multiple antennas enables increased capacity or increased resilience for modern radios. This advantage depends on the deployment of the antennas at the sender and receiver. But there is a performance gap between most simulated results and the actual performance obtained in practice. This is due to the rank of the channel obtained in deployments, which depends on local propagation conditions, and on the placement of the senders and receivers. Using implementation on top of USRP platform, and mobile antennas, we show that it is possible to find 'good' antenna positions within a search space of a few carrier wavelengths. This opens the possibility for adaptive methods in antenna position and coding/modulation techniques to feed back to each other to reduce the gap between theoretical and practical MIMO performance.

Quality of Experience (QoE) reflects the customer's perception of service, and is extremely important for operators. In VoIP service, variety of factors will affect customer's QoE, e.g. source data quality and the transmission channel condition. In cellular systems, although higher level of source coding will improve QoE, more radio resource will be consumed and thus degradation of system capacity will be caused. On the other hand, lower level of modulation and coding can ensure the data delivery, but will lead to more consumption of radio resource. In this paper, to solve these problems in multi-user cellular systems, the source coding quality and channel coding levels are jointly considered according to customer's QoE. In the source and channel coding adaptation, customers with over qualified QoE will sacrifice some radio resource to improve the under guaranteed QoE of others, or increase the system capacity. The simulation shows that the algorithm can effectively balance the utility of limited radio resource and increase customer's satisfaction ratio and system capacity.

A Bayesian lower bound is proposed as a new baseline for the positioning accuracy provided by satellite radionavigation signals in the presence of Gaussian noise and interference. Positioning accuracy is typically investigated using the Crame¿r-Rao Bound (CRB), but the CRB does not always constitute a tight benchmark. The proposed bound is used to obtain a threshold on signal energy that indicates the suitability of the CRB. The threshold reveals that a large signal bandwidth cannot reliably compensate for low signal energy in order to sustain positioning accuracy.

Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) has established itself as the prevalent coded modulation scheme for wireless communication systems. There are a number of semi-analytical approaches for BICM performance analysis, all of which have limitations in terms of applicability and/or complexity. In this paper, we present a novel analytical approach to approximate the bit error rate (BER) of BICM. Our approach is unified in the sense that a (i) large class of fading channels, (ii) arbitrary labeling rules, and (iii) all common signal constellations are encompassed, and it is preferable over previous work in that we provide closed-form expressions. We also derive expressions for the asymptotic BER, which reveals the diversity order and coding gain of BICM transmission over fading channels. The accuracy of proposed analytical approximations is validated through comparison with selective simulation results.

Turbo-trellis coded modulation (TTCM) schemes are designed for reliable transmission over quasi-static fading channels. Assuming pilot-assisted channel estimation, practical limitations in power and the number of pilots lead to imperfect channel estimates. A general method for robust receiver design under channel estimation errors was recently proposed by Sadough and Duhamel. In this paper, this technique is applied to improve the TTCM reception performance under channel estimation errors. We compare our proposed reception method to conventional receivers (also called mismatched receivers) in terms of bit error rate and EXIT chart analysis. Our results confirm the adequacy of the proposed receiver for improving TTCM iterative decoding performance under channel estimation errors.

This paper addresses the issue of wireless resource allocation of a Mobile WiMAX cell based on OFDMA access technique. We compare two strategies: the MAX SNR which is the most used channel assignment technique and our proposal which is based on channel condition learning. As we distinguish four IEEE 802.16e-2005 service classes: UGS, rtPS, nrtPS and ErtPS, we combine these strategies with a scheduler block in order to satisfy the QoS constraints of these classes. In addition, we take into consideration the Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme, through the selection of the slot which is based on the modulation scheme. The main concern here is to propose a simple method to assign WiMAX physical resources called slot to satisfy QoS constraints of a user's scheduled MPDUs, which can be easily and efficiently used in a realistic Mobile WiMAX network.

The conventional two-stage turbo-detection schemes generally suffer from a Bit Error Rate (BER) floor. In this paper we circumvent this deficiency by proposing a three-stage turbo detected Sphere Packing (SP) modulation aided Layered Steered Space-Time coding (LSSTC) scheme for H.264 coded video transmission over correlated Rayleigh fading channels. The soft-bit assisted H.264 coded bit-stream is protected using low-complexity short-block codes (SBCs), combined with a rate-1 recursive inner precoder is employed as an intermediate code which has an infinite impulse response and hence beneficially spreads the extrinsic information across the constituent decoders. This allows us to avoid having a BER floor. Additionally, the convergence behaviour of this serially concatenated scheme is investigated with the aid of Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) Charts. The proposed system exhibits an E b /N 0 gain of about 12 dB in comparison to the benchmark scheme carrying out iterative source-channel decoding as well as Layered Steered Space-Time coding (LSSTC) aided Sphere Packing (SP)demodulation, but dispensing with the optimised SBCs.

In this paper the spectral efficiency using combinations of Transmit Antenna Selection with Linear Dispersion Code Selection (TACS) is studied. The selection criterion is defined in order to maximize the spectral efficiency while bounding the maximum error rate (Rate Adaptation). The performance of the proposed spatial link adaptation scheme is evaluated under low mobility environments concluding that in case of linear receivers (e.g. MMSE) the TACS scheme with adaptive coding and modulation achieves a noticeable SNR gain (up to 3dB) in a wide SNR range (from 6 to 18dB), and could be considered as a powerful technique to achieve a smooth transition between diversity and multiplexing in order to maximize the overall system throughput.
