Future mobile radio networks are expected to witness an increase in capacity demand. Since the spectrum suited for mobile radio application is scarce, the spectrum efficiency of future mobile radio networks has to be increased in order to be able to meet the capacity demand. In networks applying adaptive modulation and coding, both, transmit power and bandwidth can be considered as resources. In order to achieve high spectrum efficiency, the adaptation of the allocation of transmit power and bandwidth to the time-varying capacity demand is an important topic. In this paper, an approach that adjusts the allocation of transmit power to the cells in order to adapt the network to changing capacity demands is proposed. A mathematical model that relates transmit power and the probability of outage in the cells is presented and used in an approach for the minimsation of the outage probability in the cells using convex optimisation techniques. The performance of the presented approach is evaluated and its suitability for the adaptation of the network to capacity hotspots is shown. Due to the use of a mathematical model and convex optimisation techniques, the presented approach is suited for self-organising optimisation.

Constrained sequence codes are widely used to help meet constraints imposed by digital storage and communication systems. This paper presents a straightforward approach to evaluate the capacity of constrained sequence codes that are modelled by a two-dimensional finite state machine (FSM) with nearest-neighbour connections. Starting with the equivalent one-dimensional constraint, we show how the eigenvalues of the resulting connection matrix increase as the size of the second dimension is increased. Further, we demonstrate how this knowledge can be applied to code design, in that with a given capacity in mind, the code designer is able to determine the set of two-dimensional constraints that will meet this capacity.

In this paper we consider the CQI reporting problem in MIMO downlink with adaptive switching between single user and multiuser mode and finite rate feedback. The feedback consist of channel directional information, which is the precoding weight, and channel quality information, which is a quantized value of estimated post processing SINR. The quantization of the channel directional information causes multiuser interference so that the post processing SINR after a linear receiver in multiuser mode is considerably different from the SINR in single user mode. The accuracy of the channel quality information plays a relevant role for adaptive modulation and coding. In order to achieve good performance without increasing feedback load by reporting accurate channel quality for both modes, we consider differential reporting for the multiuser mode. We optimize the channel quality reporting by considering an optimum differential quantization between single user and multiuser SINR.

The tremendous growth in the global navigation satellite system paved the way for modernization of GPS and other GNSS systems. A major milestone in the modernization initiative is the inclusion of new civilian signals. These new signals encompass key innovations such as data less channel, improved navigation data message format, secondary spreading code structure and new modulation schemes. In this paper we concentrate on selection and analysis of the secondary spreading codes for use in Indian regional navigation satellite system (IRNSS).

In this paper, according to the basic theory of digital modulator, the design model of digital modulator is built by using the improved Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) technology through running the Matlab/DSP Builder environment. Firstly,analyse the function of each module in this model and simulate the grade of algorithms to it and also produce VHDL language, then carry on Register Transport Level (RTL) grade simulation to the model in Modelsim. In the end, it also introduces the way to realize digital modulator in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip, which verify the correctness and validity of the model. This design can not only produce many kinds of the digital signal modulation, but can also simplify the hardware circuit of the modern system greatly and save plenty of the system resources and improve the reliability and flexibility, what is more, compared with other designs, the performance price ratio of the design has advantage in modulated signal device and possess certain practicability and usefulness.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is noted for its resistance to narrowband interference when equipped with forward error correction. This technique along with erasure insertion is adequate when the the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is moderate, around 0 dB, however, when the interference is severe, i.e. SIR = -20 dB, a non-orthogonal interference corrupts a large number of the data subcarriers due to spectral leakage. This situation requires a large number of erasures that compromise the code's error correction capability. The prediction-error filter (PEF) is proposed as an erasure insertion mechanism that localizes the erasures to the tones surrounding the interference, while not affecting the remaining tones. The simulation results indicate excellent performance, for the bit-interleaved coded modulated (BICM) OFDM system using the PEF and BPSK modulation when the SIR = -20 dB in a frequency-selective fading channel.

Serially Concatenated Overlapped Code Division Multiplexing (SC-OVCDM) system was presented. In this system, for input of OVCDM can be arbitrary modulated symbol, Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) code is firstly employed as outer code, OVCDM code with short constraint length is inner code, a symbol interleaver serially concatenates them. We employ serially nonbinary iterative decoding in the receiver. Symbol-wise Extrinsic Information Transfer chart (EXIT) is used to analyze convergence property of SC-OVCDM system, based on EXIT we propose a search algorithm to look for optimal inner code. Performance of obtained SC-OVCDM system on the AWGN channel is simulated, and compared to three systems with same spectral efficiency including turbo code in Long Term Evolution. Simulation results show proposed search algorithm can accurately estimation cliff threshold of SC-OVCDM. At bit error rate level of 10 -5 , SC-OVCDM system with short frame length can obtain 0.3 dB, 2.5 dB and 6 dB coding gain respectively.

Capacity of systems using single modulation type can be calculated in a semi-deterministic fashion. However, for systems with adaptive modulation and coding, the capacity is also dependent on the distribution of modulations and traffic beneath these distributions. In order to utilise the network resources effectively, the areas with higher traffic should be covered with higher order modulation that can provide higher throughput levels. In this work, an optimization metric is proposed for utilization of the systems with adaptive modulations. The proposed metric, by making use of the coverage areas of specific modulations and the traffic demand beneath them; will be an important tool in the optimization procedures of systems that support multi-level modulations such as 3G and 4G.

In this paper the quality of service (QoS) constrained radio resource allocation problem at the downlink of a multiuser multicarrier system is investigated. We demonstrate and analyze the trade-off between energy consumption and transmit power within a cross physical and link layer system model, which jointly considers power allocation, adaptive modulation and coding and ARQ/HARQ retransmission protocols. A novel transmit power constrained energy minimization problem is formulated based on the competing nature of the two resources. Due to the combinatorial property of the problem, a suboptimal heuristic resource allocation algorithm is proposed, the accuracy of which is compared with the dual optimal value obtained as a byproduct of the algorithm. Simulation results also provide performance comparisons on ARQ and HARQ protocols, and their different impacts on the choice of the optimal modes of operations.

This paper proposes a cross-layer-optimized user selection and packet transmission technique for the downlink multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN). In IEEE 802.11 WLAN, packet duration is decided by a data size and a selected transmission mode (modulation and coding scheme, MCS), and therefore, in general, the packet duration of each user varies according to the channel conditions and the applications. If multiple users whose packet durations are considerably different are selected as the target of the downlink MU-MIMO transmission, then the efficiency of spatial multiplexing degrades and the network throughput cannot be enhanced. When selecting users as the target of the downlink MU-MIMO transmission, the degree of spatial channel correlation among users (from the viewpoint of the physical layer) and the packet waiting times in a queue (from the viewpoint of the MAC layer) have to be considered. In addition to these criteria, in IEEE 802.11 WLAN, uniformity of the packet durations among users has to be considered as a criterion. In the proposed method, data size is adjusted in order to make the packet durations of the users uniform after selecting the users based on the spatial compatibility and the packet waiting times. This means that the proposed downlink MU- MIMO transmission is optimized in 3 dimensions by the cross- layer approach: the spatial channel correlations, packet waiting times and the uniformity of the packet durations. Computer simulations are performed and the results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
