An adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, with a preceded cyclic prefix (PCP) as a signaling link was proposed earlier to address the recent need of flexible transmission techniques in cognitive radio (CR) communications. The flexibility of the PCP-OFDM system relies on the concurrent transmission of OFDM signal and PCP signaling which represents OFDM system parameters including bandwidth, modulation, coding schemes etc. Efficient demodulation of PCP signaling is therefore of great importance for OFDM data recovery and reduce the delay from the system adaption. In this paper, we propose to use a three-stage demodulator to recover the signaling information carried by the PCPs. Design of this three-stage demodulator are analyzed and performance is evaluated through the simulations in different channel conditions. In addition, with proposed peak combining technique, impact of the multipath impairment is mitigated to a great extent. It is observed from the simulation results that this signaling demodulation scheme provides the same performance as the conventional optimal matched filter but with significantly reduced hardware and computational complexity.

With the ever increasing volume of the digital data being generated from our day to day life there is a huge increase in the demand for much faster and denser storage technologies. Conventional two dimensional (surface) storage/memory technologies may soon be replaced with much faster and denser three dimensional volumetric (holographic) storage technologies. Photo sensitive protein Bacteriorhodopsin(BR) has been proven to have great chemical, thermal and holographic properties and is a good choice as a holographic material in volumetric memory design. Balanced modulated codes are used in volumetric memory systems to reduce the bit error rate (BER) and improve the fidelity, currently coding schemes like 6:8 balanced modulated coding are employed which limit the size of the page to 8-bits and achieve a code rate (utility) of 75%. As the volumetric storage technology matures we need efficient algorithms to produce balanced modulation codes with high code rate on bigger page sizes. In this paper we give new algorithms to generate balanced modulation codes which can achieve superior code rates compared to the existing methods to generate balanced modulated codes.

Based on nonlinear OQPSK (Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) format it is possible to define a wide class of TC-OQAM signals (Trellis Coded-Offset Quadrature Amplitude modulation) with good gains. This paper investigates nonlinear effects in TC-OQAM signals, taking advantage of the the nonlinear OQPSK format. This allows an analytical characterization of the transmitted signals when affected by nonlinear devices such as those inherent to a nonlinear power amplification, which can be used for obtaining the PSD (Power Spectral Density) of the transmitted signals, the design of the optimum receiver as the corresponding performance.

Advanced broadcasting system-satellite (ABS-S) is a transmission standard for direct broadcasting satellite applications in China. Firstly, this paper makes a brief introduction to the characteristics and structure of ABS-S standard, and elucidates the performance of ABS-S which is more outstanding than that of the Europe satellite broadcasting standard DVB-S used worldwide nowadays and has almost the same performance with the second generation satellite broadcasting system DVB-S2. Secondly, this paper presents the implementation and test results of the ABS-S modulator based on the ABS-S standard, especially, emphasizes on the encoding method of LDPC code. At last, the presented modulator was verified by board-level experiment. The test results show that the implemented modulator operates successfully.

This paper present a transceiver for NFC (Near Field Communication) using an inductive powered receiver to enable all type of NFC communication modes such as the passive, active, RW, and RFID modes. Notably, when the external battery has been fully discharged, the RFID mode can be operated through the inductive powered structure. We have analyzed the capacity of the inductive powered receiver of the NFC transceiver to achieve power from an RF Signal for an RFID mode. To understand the range of power available, we have simulated the harvesting of power from a loop antenna at 13.56 MHz. The bandwidth of the receiver is designed to range from 106 kbps to 424 kbps even to a 867 kHz subcarrier of 13.56 MHz RFID tag.

This paper presents a new approach to the soft detection of spatial data streams in MIMO channels in slow fading channels. We focus on high spectral efficiency bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) MIMO OFDM system where, after serial to parallel conversion and per antenna coding, spatial data streams are simultaneously transmitted by using an antenna array. We propose a detection algorithm basing on the combination of linear and non linear detection techniques. The proposed algorithm orders the spatial streams as per V-BLAST ordering and then uses linear detectors as MMSE or zero forcing (ZF) to detect the streams which have seen good channel realizations and therefore enjoy higher signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs). These streams after being detected are subsequently stripped off leading to the max log MAP detection of the streams which have seen comparatively poor realizations of the channel and consequently have lower SNRs. Unlike maximum likelihood (ML) detection, whose complexity is huge due to the need for enumerating all possible combinations of the transmitted constellation points, the proposed method has low complexity. The algorithm has a fully parallel structure, suitable for the implementation in parallel hardware. Numerical examples illustrate its performance on slow fading 3 times 3 and 4 times 4 complex MIMO channels.

Cutoff rate is a sensible parameter specifies both a range of code rates and a measure of the coding complexity to achieve a desired error probability. China mobile multimedia broadcasting (CMMB) is an important part and a hotspot of the 3rd generation of mobile communication in China. As a scenario of radio communication, the research on CMMB has to be considered over the Rayleigh fading channels. Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is known as a remarkable scheme with better code diversity and cutoff rate than others over Rayleigh fading channels. In this paper, an improved channel coding scheme based on BICM is proposed to achieve better reliability than the conventional one of CMMB over Rayleigh fading channels. The simulation results show that the error correction capability of the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional one of CMMB considerably. When BER is below 10 -5 , the improved channel coding scheme can achieve more than 1 dB code gain.

The performance of RF class-D amplification with Neoteric modulator and bandpass sigma-delta (ΣΔ) modulator are studied and compared. The modulators encode the source signal into a binary level pulse train, and broaden the application of class-D amplifiers to include signals with time-varying envelopes. Their performance are directly linked to the power efficiency and linearity of the overall amplifier. The modulators are evaluated in terms of two important parameters, coding efficiency and average transition frequency. Tested at 800MHz with a 5MHz W-CDMA signal having a 10.6dB peak-to-average ratio and a class-D amplifier constructed using GaAs FET devices, it is found that the amplifier achieves a power efficiency of 21% with Neoteric modulator, compared to an efficiency of 11% with bandpass ΣΔ modulator, while with comparable level spectral growth of around −45dBc. The better power efficiency obtained with Neoteric modulator is due to its higher coding efficiency of 11.4% versus 5.8% for the bandpass ΣΔ modulator.

For the contradiction between accuracy and data size, this paper introduces an improved estimation algorithm of symbol synchronization based on the maximum mean power estimation algorithm. A Deslauriers-Dubuc interpolation filter is used in the improved algorithm. Analysis of experimental results showed that the estimation algorithm proposed in this paper not only improves the accuracy of estimate, but also has a smaller calculation that facilitates the implementation of low-complexity.

A nonlinear modulation, the constant envelope CPM class being of particular interest, has multi-dimensional signal waveforms. We introduce a spatial code for multi-antenna CPFSK system using a different waveform (constellation) space on each antenna. The 2-dimensional space-waveform codeword spans an antenna (spatial) and constellation (waveform) domains. We optimize the waveforms for rank and determinant criterion. The resulting space-waveform code exhibits a full rank without any need of temporal domain encoding. Numerical results are presented for a selected set of CPFSK class of signals and 2-antenna transmitter. In this particular case, the procedure leads to an elegant implementation by Spatially Mirrored Tilted Phase CPFSK. The presented scheme is well suited for the concatenation with outer scalar temporal domain code.
