Adaptive modulation and code (AMC) in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising approach to achieve higher data rates with sufficient performance. However a measure of channel state is desired in order to decide upon transition rates and modulation mode. SNR is such a sufficient measure. In this work, a channel estimator based on transform domain algorithm (TFD) is presented firstly; then a novel SNR estimation algorithm for OFDM in Rayleigh fading channels is proposed, which is proved simple and effective by theoretical analysis and computer simulation.

Future wireless communication systems being characterized by tight frequency reuse, adaptive modulation and coding schemes and diversified data services will be interference limited by the interfering signals of diverse rates and strengths. Frequency reuse factor of 1 being proposed for the next generation mobile systems will lead to 1 or 2 dominant interferers. We propose in this paper a low complexity maximum likelihood (ML) demodulator for interference suppression. The proposed demodulator is also applicable to general multi-stream (spatially multiplexed) MIMO systems where it reduces one complex dimension of the system i.e. the complexity of ML detection reduces from O (|chi| eta ) to O(|chi| eta-1 ) where n is number of transmit antennas/spatial streams. This is a fundamental result as space and technology constraints shall be restricting future MIMO systems to low dimensionality. Therefore reduction of one complex dimension in detection shall enable implementation of ML detectors at the receivers. We look at the performance of linear MMSE demodulator and the proposed demodulator in the presence of interferers of diverse strengths and rates and simulation results demonstrate much improved performance of the proposed demodulator for interference suppression.

Generally, the capacity-achieving signaling design for a specific channel should consider the joint optimization of channel coding and modulation. Nevertheless, coding theorists and practitioners have recognized that a well-designed LDPC code can achieve capacity-approaching performance universally across a range of data transmission and storage channels. A pronounced example is the forward error correction scheme adopted recently by the second generation standards for digital video broadcasting (DVB), wherein the same LDPC codes are expected to be reused over satellite, terrestrial and cable channels. However, to accommodate the spectral efficiency of different channel type, the coded bits should be mapped to the modulator judiciously. The well-known BICM strategy employs a large random bit interleaver, which typically yields good performance for an arbitrary choice of constellation mapper. However, it is problematic for high-speed coding and modulation due to the large amount of memory and circuits routing required. This motivates us to impose structural simplicity on the bit interleaver configuration so that the coded bits are de-multiplexed systematically into parallel groups to feed the constellation mapper. In this paper, we focus on the design of bit demultiplexers for multi-level modulations by applying the framework of multi-edge type (MET) LDPC. Since the channel-dependence of a given code ensemble is dominated by the mutual information between the input and output of the effective channel, we propose to simplify the analysis of the decoding behavior by using a set of surrogate binary erasure channels (BEC). Simulation results indicate that the proposed bit demultiplexer surpasses the performance of the heuristic interleaving strategy specified in second generation DVB standard for terrestrial channels (DVB-T2).

In this paper, we utilize a new study method that is under independent case of multiple optical orthogonal codes to derive the probability function of MOOCS-OPS networks, discuss the performance characteristics for a variety of parameters, and compare some characteristics of the system employed by single optical orthogonal code or multiple optical orthogonal codes sequences-based optical labels. The performance of the system is also calculated, and our results verify that the method is effective. Additionally it is found that performance of MOOCS-OPS networks would, negatively, be worsened, compared with single optical orthogonal code-based optical label for optical packet switching (SOOC-OPS); however, MOOCS-OPS networks can greatly enlarge the scalability of optical packet switching networks.

In time-varying channels, channel state information (CSI) is often provided via a feedback channel to facilitate dynamic allocation of resources like transmit power and data rates. In OFDM-based ultra wideband (UWB) channels, the signaling overhead for this CSI feedback can be extremely large. In this paper, we propose several compression schemes for the feedback channel that exploit the temporal and spatial correlation properties of the multiband-OFDM UWB channel, viz., fixed and variable spectral binning techniques, hierarchical binary tree-based spectral compression schemes, and Markov state-based differential temporal compression schemes.

The use of frequencies in excess of 20 GHz for Earth-space communications is significantly impaired by the effects of the weather phenomena in the troposphere. The main contributing factor is attenuation due to rainfall but at higher frequencies (Q- and V-band 40/50 GHz) cloud attenuation can also be significant. Although small fades can be overcome by adapting the physical layer through changes to modulation, coding scheme and through power control, fades can be so deep that the link is lost. Knowledge of these conditions can help schedule and manage network resources and help reduce interference. This paper discusses the use of propagation models allied to numerical weather prediction and weather radar data to produce real-time and forecast prediction of fades. These can be used to both design and drive instantaneous fade-mitigation techniques.

Iterative reception involves the computation of high quality log-likelihood ratios (LLR) to run efficiently, but the computation complexity of optimal a posteriori probabilities (APP) is exponential in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system dimensions. The list-sequential (LISS) detector achieves near- optimal performance by searching for a list of best candidates inside a tree modelizing the system. As this decoder remains complex, we propose here to modify its cost metric by adding a positive bias term, which accelerates the decoding algorithm. A good optimization of the bias value results in an important drop-off of the complexity while preserving the performance of the classical LISS decoder.

In this paper, we present optimal network coding which can maximize achievable rate region in two-way relaying discrete channels, where there are two communicating nodes and one relaying node. We focus on a low-complexity relaying protocol termed the detect-and-forward (DtF) scheme, in which the relaying node does not require channel decoding but detection. We first analyze the achievable rate region of any digital network coding function including non-linear types. We then search for the optimal network code in favor of maximizing two kinds of performance measures: the sum rate and the product rate. For high SNR regimes, linear network codes like the exclusive-or (XOR) function can offer the maximum-achievable rate region. Whereas, for low SNR regimes, it is verified that non-linear network codes like the negate-or (NOR) function can outperform linear codes due to the effect of error occurrence at the intermediate relaying node.

Signal space diversity (SSD) has been lately adopted into the second generation of the terrestrial digital video broadcasting standard DVB-T2. While spectrally efficient, SSD improves the performance of QAM constellations over fading channels thanks to an increased diversity. In this paper, flexible mapper and demapper architectures for DVB-T2 standard are detailed. A detection based on the decomposition of the constellation into two-dimensional sub-regions in signal space associated to an algorithmic simplification constitute the main novelty of this work. They enable to strongly decrease the complexity of the demapper. The design and the FPGA prototyping of the resultant architecture are then described. Low architecture complexity and measured performance demonstrate the efficiency of the detection method.
