In this paper, we present a comparison between the sensitivity of SC-FDMA and OFDMA schemes to large carrier frequency offsets (CFO) and timing offsets (TO) of different users on the uplink. Our study shows the following observations: 1) In the ideal case of zero CFOs and TOs (i.e., perfect synchronization), the uncoded BER performance of SC-FDMA with frequency domain MMSE equalizer is better than that of OFDMA due to the inherent frequency diversity that is possible in SC-FDMA. Also, because of inter-symbol interference in SC-FDMA, the performance of SC-FDMA with MMSE equalizer can be further improved by using low-complexity interference cancellation (IC) techniques. 2) In the presence of large CFOs and TOs, significant multiuser interference (MUI) gets introduced, and hence the performance of SC-FDMA with MMSE equalizer can get worse than that of OFDMA. However, the performance advantage of SC-FDMA with MMSE equalizer over OFDMA (due to the potential for frequency diversity benefit in SC-FDMA) can be restored by adopting multistage IC techniques, using the knowledge of CFOs and TOs of different users at the receiver.

HARQ (hybrid automatic-repeat-request) enhances system throughput by improving SNR and gaining time diversity through retransmissions. To utilizing the coding gain, this paper classifies the priority of FEC coded bits and rearranges the bits for each retransmission at MSB (most significant bit) positions or LSB (less significant bit) positions of modulation symbols according to their priorities. In Addition to time diversity, the proposed HARQ gains frequency and spatial diversities. With the maximum retransmissions of two, numerical simulations show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional Chase Combining (CC) HARQ and Incremental Redundancy (IR) HARQ for WiMAX systems in terms of BLER (block error rate)and throughput with maximum SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) gains of 3.5 dB and 3 dB, respectively.

The resource allocation problem at the downlink of a wireless multiuser multicarrier system is addressed, where each end user in the cell has two QoS requirements that need to be fulfilled, namely the minimum data throughput and the maximum latency time. Under these QoS constraints and with limited available radio resources (frequency band and transmit power), the capacity of the system in terms of the number of servable users is to be maximized. A cross-layer framework is introduced where subchannel assignment, power allocation, adaptive modulation and coding, and ARQ protocol are jointly taken into account. Due to the complex structure of the optimization a suboptimal solution is proposed, which is shown by numerical experiments to be computationally tractable yet yielding relatively satisfactory system performance.

Design and analysis of low-acoustic noise motor drivers with random pulse-width modulated inverter based on programmed PWM is presented in this paper. In motor drive applications, the high switching frequencies often results in acoustic noises, which make operator feel uncomfortable. The programmed PWM are used to solve nonlinear equation eliminating harmonics with initial value obtained by equal area PWM to obtain the switching angle. More than 100 sets of switching patterns eliminating different harmonics are solved by the proposed method to randomly sample at every period to generate PWM waveform. Random probability function is used to obtain the harmonic spectrum distribution by random sampling method to determine the output voltage waveforms. For each cycle, the PWM switching patterns are programmed to generate random selected harmonics to spread out the side-band harmonics reducing annoying acoustic noises. The random selected harmonics are calculated by using Gaussian distribution to minimize the acoustic noise and harmonic losses. The voltage spectrum is analyzed using fast-Fourier transformation (FFT) by TI TMS320F2407 which is used to determine the PWM switching pattern of the next cycle to minimize the concentrated sideband acoustic noises.

Multiple access schemes are used to allow many mobile users to share simultaneously a finite amount of radio spectrum. For high quality communications, this must be done without severe degradation in the performance of the system. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is one of the major multiple access techniques used now days to share the available bandwidth in a wireless communication system. CDMA systems are characterised by multipath interference. Rake receivers are commonly used in CDMA systems to restrict the multipath fading and provide efficient reception. These receivers collect the time-shifted versions of the transmitted signal, combine them and produce the strongest estimate of the original signal. This paper discusses the various structures of Rake receivers such as multiple antennas single Rake finger, single antenna multiple Rake fingers, multiple antennas multiple Rake fingers and performs the bit error rate (BER) comparison. BPSK modulation and code modulation are considered for spreading the original signal. Space diversity (Antenna diversity) technique is employed at the receiver.

This paper presents the work conducted as part of doctoral research carried out at ISAE and ONERA on dynamic Radio Resource Management techniques for DVB-RCS systems using Fade Mitigation Techniques at Ka band. For a system using Adaptive coding and modulation at its physical layer the problem of optimally apportioning the satellite carriers' among the many different waveforms, or modes, available becomes crucial to its efficiency. In current DVB-RCS systems the carriers' waveforms are defined during system design. In this work a process to dynamically define carrier waveforms during system operation, based on prevailing traffic and propagation conditions, is proposed whereby the system available capacity, and QoS are shown, via simulations, to improve compared to a static definition.

Multicarrier modulations such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems are of great interest for future mobile communications. In order to provide transmit and receive diversity, we consider MC-CDMA systems equipped with multiple transmit antennas and multiple receive antennas (MIMO) where some space-time (ST) coded transmission schemes are applied. In this paper, we will study the performance of MC-CDMA systems with different coding rates in Nakagami-m fading channels which have been found to be a very good fitting for the mobile radio channel. In case of two transmitting antennas, we will use Alamouti codes while in case of 3 or 4 antennas, we will use codes provided by Vucetic and Ganesan. We will also try to find the optimum number of transmitting antennas in different channel conditions.

High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) is an extension of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technology of 3GPP Rel-99, with the objective increasing the data rate (up to 5.76 Mbps) and reducing the latency of the uplink. 3GPP UMTS standard Rel-6 introduces a new "Enhanced Dedicated Channel" (E-DCH) for the uplink. The main focus of the work presented in this paper is to analyse the effect of TNL congestion control on the HSUPA performance. The congestion control function works together with the scheduler and HARQ functionality in order to control the offered load to the TNL network. In this manner, the data flow over the transport network (TNL) is adequately controlled and limited to the available TNL capacity by avoiding congestion in the transport network. The TNL congestion control consists of two independent parts: congestion detection and congestion control which have been implemented, tested and validated within the focus of this paper. The simulation results presented in this paper confirm that the congestion in the transport network can be controlled in such a way that the available TNL capacity can be effectively utilised and hence the performance of HSUPA network can be significantly improved in all aspects.

This paper investigates effective SINR mapping (ESM) methods for link abstraction (or channel quality evaluation) used in system level performance simulation. Among all existing ESM methods, the mean mutual information per-bit (MMIB) ESM has been shown to be superior in terms of high accurate block error rate (BLER) prediction and supporting multiple modulation schemes within one data block. However, complicated multi-Gaussian distribution approximation is needed in MMIB-ESM when high modulation schemes such as 16QAM and 64QAM are considered. This paper proposes a new generalized bit-wise E-ESM (BE-ESM), which is shown to have similar performance as MMIB-ESM but with a very simple structure. Furthermore, it is also shown that BE-ESM and MMIB-ESM can be equivalent to each other in certain extents.

Optimal selection of the settings of a DVB-H system will be presented to maximize the coverage for indoor reception for a given throughput requirement. The performance of the system will be evaluated by measurements for different modulation schemes, guard intervals, and MPE-FEC rates. Based on trial results, optimal transmission parameters will be selected for a DVB-H network. This optimization will allow broadcasters and companies to select optimal transmitting settings for future DVB-H trials and deployments.
