Code tracking linear range and the code phase tracking jitter have always been opposing ends of the design criteria of a code lock loop in direct-sequence spread-spectrum communication systems. New modulation techniques used in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) offer better code tracking jitter and multipath performance by sharpening the correlation triangle. However the linear tracking range is reduced which directly results in poor dynamics and low signal strength performance of the tracking loop. The problem is most severe in the sophisticated Alternate Binary Offset Carrier (AltBOC) modulation. This paper proposes a method to extend a loop's tracking range without affecting the jitter performance in the existing linear range of the code tracking loop.

This paper presents a capacity analysis of a decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative network with adaptive source transmission. Three different adaptive techniques are considered: (i) optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation (OPRA); (ii) constant power with optimal rate adaptation (ORA); (iii) truncated channel inversion with fixed rate (TIFR). Closed form capacity expressions are derived for non-identical and independently distributed (non-i.i.d.) Nakagami-m fading wireless environments. These expressions are validated by simulation results obtained through Monte Carlo simulation. It is observed that OPRA and ORA provide roughly the same capacity, while TIFR yields slightly less capacity relative to the other two.

Cellular radio systems of the next generation aim to make the most out of the available radio resources in the dimensions bandwidth, time and space. The division of time into slots, frames and superframes is standard, both for TDD and FDD duplex modes. OFDMA allows the individual disposition of subchannels as a subdivision of the bandwidth but an aggregation of subcarriers. A basic resource unit is hence a brick in this two-dimensional grid. Space is important both as the location of the base station in whose surrounding the resources are used and in spatial diversity channels. These resources are the scarce good in future radio communications, because they are required proportionally to the traffic demand per area. Due to adaptive modulation and coding schemes and large ranges of possible SINR values, the required resources for a transmission may differ by a factor ten depending on the distances. In this paper we discuss the resource allocation and scheduling mission. We introduce a control system view on the topic, taking adaptive algorithms for modulation, power, subchannel usage and channel quality indication into account.

Signal classification is an important subject for military radio communications. With the revolution of digitizing communications ever closer to the antenna, commercial cognitive radios with programmable modulation schemes and adaptive transmission rates have become a practical wireless communication platform. Signal classification techniques have attracted much attention recently by the cognitive network applications in developing the next generation radio receivers and sensor networks with built-in automatic signal detection and classification capabilities. However, the technical expectations and goals in commercial applications are quite different with that in military communication systems. A key research area is to develop new algorithms with the low-cost real-time adaptive demodulation capability. An overview of automatic signal classification techniques and the challenges in migrating current signal classification methods into the cognitive radios and sensor network will be discussed.

Recently, the coding and decoding of code-division multiple-access (CDMA) signals using electronic transversal filters at a chip rate of 18 Gchips/s for use in passive optical access networks (PONs) was demonstrated. The system used 7-chip transversal filters giving a potential for 7 users, where each user had a data rate of 1.25 Gb/s. In this paper, we show two techniques to scale up the electronically processed CDMA (ECDMA) system, namely by increasing the number of chips in the code and doubling the capacity using I and Q modulation of two in-quadrature channels. For increasing the number of chips, we demonstrate an electronically processed Walsh Code with 16 chips at 18 Gchip/s. An auto-cross correlation ratio of 18.1 dB is achieved between two orthogonal codes after transmission over 10 km of SMF. In addition, I-Q modulation of two electronic CDMA channels using the same electronic transversal filters is demonstrated. Here, two in-quadrature channels with chip rates of 18 Gchip/s show the potential of current technology for future 40 Gb/s throughput ECDMA PONs.

This paper aims at providing different cost-efficient solutions for the channel impairments in tropical areas. In order to extend service to isolated areas, we propose hybrid architecture based on DVB-S2/RCS+Wi-Fi networks. In this scenario the satellite channel is affected by deep rain events that do not allow ACM modes to protect data. Moreover, the delay in the ACM reaction to fade changes can affect the quality of the video transmission. In order to avoid the QoS reduction, we focus on different fading mitigation techniques (FMT), designing a multi-layer scheme protection, using LL-FEC and AL-FEC in higher layers, and optimizing the intervention threshold and super-frame length in the physical layer.

Quality means uniformity around a target value. The quality of transmitted voice is an important means of gauging performance of equipment and services related to voice communication. This paper shows how normal binary ordering in quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) can be used in an effective manner for voice transmission purposes in a soft radio to give better quality results. This would be compared to the M-ary Gray Coded Mapping Scheme which has proved so far a vital tool in error correction. These comparisons apply under some shortcomings like the use of same number of quantization levels i.e. M number of quantization levels for a signal being fed to an M-ary modulator, e.g. using 16 level quantization along with 16-QAM. The paper will review the comparison of the two coding schemes used in modulation techniques for voice signals. The relative and accuracy of the two techniques would also be discussed. It will be shown that for the above mentioned scenario (M quantization levels and M-ary QAM), the normal binary coded QAM performs better than Gray-coded QAM. This being done, a second scheme is proposed which performs much better than the previous.

In this paper, we propose a low complexity cooperative communication systems with the amplify-and-forward protocol over a multiple distributed relay network where only one relay among relay candidates is selected according to a certain threshold. By setting different values of their threshold, we consider two different relay selection schemes: (i) achieving the maximum spectral efficiency and (ii) minimizing system complexity. From our provided statistics of the combined output signal-to-noise ratio and our analysis of the system complexity, we show that our proposed node selection schemes provide considerable spectral efficiency gain and outage performance while it has a relatively low complexity comparing to other schemes known in the literatures.

In this paper, we propose a PAPR reduction method for a 16-QAM OFDM system by combining the BCM scheme with PTS technique, called BCM-PTS. We use four binary Reed-Muller codes as the BCM component codes to construct a 16-QAM BCM code and decompose this code as direct sum of a correction subcode for encoding information bits and a scrambling subcode for encoding PAPR bits. The PAPR bits are reserved in the fourth component code to generate a number of candidates for PAPR control. We consider the PAPR performance for Reed-Muller codes in natural and cyclic ordering, respectively. Numerical results show that our proposed method has better PAPR statistics than the original PTS technique in the 16-QAM OFDM systems.

In this paper we study the problem of finding capacity-maximizing constellations in BICM for asymptotically low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We base our analysis on the so-called Hadamard transform and on a linear approximation of the BICM capacity for asymptotically low SNRs. We fully characterize the set of constellations, input distributions, and binary labelings that achieve Shannon's limit E b /N 0 = -1.59 dB. For equiprobable input distributions, a constellation achieves this limit if and only if it is a linear projection of a hypercube.
