Wireless spread spectrum technologies are widely used in the implementation of WLAN physical layer. Bits error rate (BER) and bandwidth efficiency are the two most important aspects we concern. In this paper, we propose a high efficiency spread spectrum modulation technology based on the definition of non-strictly orthogonal sequences (NS-OS). Simulation shows that the proposed scheme has a better performance than the traditional technologies do under AWGN channel, and a parameter q defined in this scheme could be tuned to balance BER performance and bandwidth efficiency according to different applications.

Relay transmission technique can be utilized to increase coverage or enhance throughput for conventional cellular communication systems. There are two typical relaying schemes, Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and Decode-and-Forward (DF). This paper presents a new scheme named Soft symbol Estimation and Forward (SEF), which holds the advantages of both AF and DF, i.e. keeping soft information and obtaining decoding gain. This scheme has similar operations as DF except that the operations are performed in a soft-input-soft-output (SISO) fashion. The relay performs SISO decoding, SISO re-encoding and then the key point soft symbol estimation, which is derived based on Maximum Likelihood (ML) criteria. Simulation results prove that the proposed SEF scheme much outperforms both AF and DF.

Adaptive multi-user resource allocation is one of the key features towards high speed wireless network based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA). According to IEEE 802.16e (WiMAX) standard radio, resource allocation problem has to be performed on a two-dimensional space (frequency and time) with the constraint that each transmitted burst should occupy a contiguous portion of the frame. The paper introduces two different strategies and it investigates the advantages, drawbacks and challenges of the radio resource allocation procedure in two dimensions.

A nonlinear binary code with a single carrier M-QAM linear modulation is designed to control certain transitions in the symbol constellation. This concept is employed to develop spectral shaping modulation codes with M-QAM linear modulations so as to reduce out-of-band power. The code is realized as a nonlinear binary convolutional code, and the coded modulation is represented as a Markov chain. The closed form of the power spectral density for this trellis coded modulation is derived.

In this paper, construction of partitioned Reed Solomon coded modulation (RSCM) for the additive white Gaussian noise channel is investigated. By matching configuration of component codes with the channel characteristics, it is shown that this system is robust for the Gaussian channel. This approach is compared with non-partitioned RSCM, a Reed Solomon code combined with an MPSK signal set using Gray mapping; and block coded MPSK modulation using binary codes, Reed Muller codes, (RMCM). All codes use hard decision decoding algorithm. Simulation results for these schemes show that RSCM based on set partitioning performs better than not based on set partitioning and RMCM.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme suffers performance degradation with the signaling feedback delay, as channel state information (CSI) is outdated with time variant channel. In this paper, we propose a robust AMC scheme to mitigate the effect of signaling feedback delay, especially in vehicular environments. Channel information estimated in current time interval is utilized to obtain the distribution of channel fading in upcoming time interval. Average block error rate (BLER) for given modulation and coding scheme (MCS) is derived. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme guarantees reliable performance even in a vehicular environment with maximum Doppler frequency shift of 300 Hz.

In this paper, a novel model for single-bit internal quantizer SigmaDelta-modulators is presented. It is shown that this model can be used for an exact stability prediction of these systems. Furthermore, it is explained how the necessary computations can be performed in a numerically efficient way by means of a mixed integer linear program (MILP).

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have been used for communication over a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel. It has been shown in the literature that the optimal decoding of such system requires joint decoding of both user messages at each user. Also, a joint code design procedure should be performed. We propose a method which uses a novel labeling strategy and is based on the idea behind the bit-interleaved coded modulation. This method does not require joint decoding and/or joint code optimization. Thus, it reduces the overall complexity of near-capacity coding in broadcast channels. For different rate pairs on the boundary of the capacity region, pairs of LDPC codes are designed to demonstrate the success of this technique.

A jointly optimised iterative source and channel decoding (ISCD) scheme invoking the Adaptive Multi Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) speech codec is proposed. More explicitly, the transceiver investigated consists of serially concatenated Recursive Convolutional (RSC) codes, a Unity Rate Code (URC) referred to as a precoder and the AMRWB speech codec, where the resultant bitstream is transmitted using Differential Space-Time Spreading (DSTS) and Sphere Packing (SP) modulation over narrowband temporally correlated Rayleigh fading channels. The convergence behaviour of the advocated scheme is investigated with the aid of Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts, which suggests that potential performance improvements can be achieved by combining a serially concatenated precoder with the AMR-WB speech codec. The proposed system exhibits an Ef,/No gain of about 1.5 dB in comparison to the benchmark scheme carrying out iterative sourceand channel-decoding as well as DSTS aided SP-demodulation, but dispensing with the precoder, when using I system = 4 system iterations.

The purpose of this work is to describe and demonstrate a new concept of a hybrid communication system, which consists of applying electrical CDMA to each data channel, on a system using optical WDM. Each user has a unique orthogonal CDMA code and modulates an electrical carrier (e.g. QPSK) prior to the data is used to directly modulate an optical carrier, using a laser. Therefore, it is possible to add several independent data channels in a physical link (optical fiber), over the same or different optical carriers, and recover the information associated to each of the channels. With this approach we can avoid the use of optical filters to separate the data channels at reception, making the system more flexible and robust.
