In this paper, two novel space-time coded modulation and corresponding noncoherent detection schemes for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) impulse radio system are proposed. An additional orthogonality is introduced to original Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (OSTBC) for performance enhancement in the proposed two schemes, which is termed as Dual Orthogonal Space-Time Coded modulation (DOSTCM). The specially designed signal structures from the DOSTCM exploit the advantage of multiantenna system and enable simple but effective noncoherent detection. Simulation results show our schemes achieve outstanding bit error rate (BER) performance.

This paper proposes a hybrid method of uplink ACK/NACK signaling combining the advantages of both the non-coherent and the coherent methods. Simulations show that the proposed method improves the SNR performance by about 1 dB at the BER of 10 -4 when compared with the coherent methods, with little loss in actual multiplexing capacity.

Cognitive radio is considered as one of the main enablers for provisioning dynamic and flexible spectrum/channel allocation in wireless communications. On the other hand several physical layer mechanisms such as adaptive modulation, multiple-input multiple output systems, advanced channel coding and/or combinations of them enhance the capacity of wireless networks. However little effort has been put till now in studying the performance gains of physical layer mechanisms with the presence of cognition capabilities. The incorporation of cognitive mechanisms demands more detailed studies for assessing the impact on the spectral efficiency. To this direction, cross-layer combination of such a physical layer with upper layers should be also considered as a case study in a cognitive wireless environment. In this work we present a study on the spectral efficiency of adaptive modulation and coding which is one of the most promising schemes of applying cognitive radio at the physical layer. Besides, we study a cross-layer combination of adaptive modulation with upper layers in the same cognitive context. We prove that the performance gain of cognitive radio over such a physical layer is not negligible.

Multilevel (Q-ary, Q > 2) pulse-position modulation (Q-PPM) with direct detection is a very popular transmission method for power-efficient free-space optical communication systems. The combination of Q-PPM with error-control coding is an effective means to further improve power efficiency. In this paper, we study the application of the multilevel coding (MLC) paradigm to Q-PPM transmission. In particular, we devise a powerful coded Q-PPM scheme which is a simplified version of MLC and which we refer to as reduced-level MLC (RL-MLC). We show how to design and optimize RL-MLC for Q-PPM when using constellation-constrained capacity as the pertinent figure of merit. Furthermore, we provide simulative evidence that RL- MLC with off-the-shelf low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) closely approaches its corresponding capacity limit. For 64-PPM, RL-MLC with only two levels achieves practically the same performance as that of bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID), which involves a more difficult design procedure.

Differential frequency hopping (DFH) was introduced as a new technology for reliable high data rate transmission in high frequency (HF) bands. Since modulation, coding and frequency hopping are combined together with frequency transition function (FTF) in DFH system. However, it was shown by recent researchers that an intelligent eavesdropper may threat the security of the system by finding FTF and sending jamming signal toward authorized receivers. The root of this drawback is the poor 2-dimensional (2D) continuity of DFH sequence generated by constant FTF. In this paper, we propose a simple DFH system with hop variable FTF controlled by a synchronized scrambler and descrambler between receiver and transmitter. The 2D continuity performance of generated DFH patterns between constant FTF and hop variable FTF are tested and compared. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the DFH code generator which combines G with PN sequence increases security of DFH system without decreasing the SER performance.

An efficient scheduling algorithm can enhance the quality of service (QoS) provided by IEEE802.16e mobile WiMAX. In this paper, a cross-layer scheduling algorithm based on genetic algorithm (CLSAGA) under the network utility maximization (NUM) concept is proposed to allocate resources for each service flow. The real coded genetic algorithm is employed to solve NUM optimization problem. Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme and QoS category index of each service flow jointly decide the weights of utility functions to calculate the scheduling scheme of medium access control (MAC) layer. Simulation results show that this approach guarantees the QoS requirements and balances priorities of the mobile stations.

Rank modulation has been introduced as a new information representation scheme for flash memories. Given the charge levels of a group of flash cells, sorting is used to induce a permutation, which in turn represents data. Motivated by the lower sorting complexity of smaller cell groups, we consider bounded rank modulation, where a sequence of permutations of given sizes are used to represent data. We study the capacity of bounded rank modulation under the condition that permutations can overlap for higher capacity.

In this paper specified codes used to modulate the chaotic signal as waveform of active sonar to improve the covertness of active sonar. The main advantage of this chaotic modulation technique is that modulated signal is noise-like. The issues of the distortions introduced by additive noise and filtered by physical underwater channel are discussed. Echo signals are demodulated by adaptive filter and recovered signals are identified by stored specified codes. It is found that the demodulator based on Lyapunov adaptive filter outperform other adaptive filters. The Lyapunov adaptive filter is also improved in the phase space. The obtained results indicate that proposed demodulator is capable of reducing mean squares error of the received source signals and as an on-line demodulator.

This study deals with high efficiency architectures enabling transmission of high PAPR signals. High PAPR signals result from new communication standards targeting high data rates and spectral efficiency. Polar Architectures, proposing the Envelope Elimination and Restoration (EER), code non constant envelope signals in order to obtain constant envelope signals at the input of the power amplifier (PA) and to use the PA in switched mode. PA efficiency is affected by the signal coding and the frequency of the envelope modulator. First, this paper presents the effect of the envelope binary distribution after coding on the efficiency of a class E power amplifier. Then, the binary distribution of a mobile WiMAX signal is observed when it is coded with a Pulse Width Modulator in EER architecture and with a low pass Sigma-Delta Modulator in a polar architecture. This analysis yields to conclude on the influence of the coding technique on the class E amplifier efficiency and presents an estimation of the efficiency that could be expected with both architectures.

We compute closed-form transfer characteristics for EXIT chart of short rate 1 block codes for binary erasure channel. These functions closely approximate the measurements over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Optimum irregular inner codes are derived for serial concatenated coding over AWGN channel. In addition, we apply the results on bitinterleaved coded modulation (BICM) and introduce signal set capacity on bit level. It is pointed out that capacity approaching performance with BICM requires new modulation schemes.
