When using an adaptive modulation and coding scheme over multicode CDMA transmission channels, the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) allocates rates equally over parallel channels to provide a wide range of data rates. However, the HSDPA system uses the radio resources inefficiently and suffers from severe performance loss when encountering inter-symbol interference (ISI) over frequency selective channels. This paper proposes a new extended-receiver model and a novel ISI-suppressing linear equalizer for a two group approach whilst nearly doubling the data rate achieved by the HSDPA systems for a given receiver signal-to-noise ratio.

A linear-programming (LP) decoder for nonbinary expander codes is presented. It is shown that the proposed decoder has the maximum-likelihood certificate properties. It is also shown that this decoder corrects any pattern of errors of a relative weight up to approximately 1/4delta A delta B (where delta A and delta B are the relative minimum distances of the constituent codes).

This paper proposes a capacity-approaching, yet simple scheme over a multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless fading channel, which is very common in the downlink of a cellular system. The proposed scheme is based on a concatenation of a mixture of short memory-length convolutional codes or repetition codes and a short, and simple rate-1 linear block code, followed by either 1-dimensional (1-D) anti-Gray or Gray mapping of quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation. By interpreting rate-1 code together with 1-D mapping as a multi-D mapping performed over multiple transmit antennas, the error performance is analyzed in the turbo pinch-off region using EXIT chart. At first, a simple design criterion on the bit-wise mutual information with perfect a priori information is derived. Based on the obtained design criterion, an optimal rate-1 code for each 1-D mapping is then constructed to maximize the bit-wise mutual information with perfect a priori information. The combination of optimal rate-1 code and 1-D mapping results in a steep inner detector's EXIT curve over an MISO channel, which matches very well to that of a simple outer code. It is demonstrated that the simple concatenation scheme can achieve a near-capacity performance over the MISO channels. In some cases, the selected mixed code is just a simple repetition code.

In a cooperative communication network, individual users are encouraged not only to transmit their own data, but also relay other user's data. This relaying transmission creates spatial diversity to combat the effect of individual severe fading and path loss. Since cooperative users utilize some degree of their transmission freedom for relaying other user's data, cooperative transmission results in lowering each user's transmission spectral efficiency. Therefore, a coding scheme with high spectral efficiency and optimized performance would be desirable for a cooperative network. This paper proposes the Trellis Coded modulation (TCM) scheme to be incorporated with the cooperative Amplify-and- Forward (AF) systems. A criterion for designing good TCM codes for AF systems is also derived and two cooperative AF systems achieving 1 bits/sec/Hz and 1.5 bits/sec/Hz for each user are presented. Analyses in this paper show that cooperative TCM schemes can not only achieve high spectral efficiency, but also outperform convolutional codes with a high order modulation scheme.

In this paper, we consider the hybrid automatic retransmission request (ARQ) for turbo coded systems with QAM modulations through block fading channels and the rates are different among (re)transmission blocks. Due to coexistence of incremental redundancy (IR) and repetition, both chase combining (CC) and IR code combining are employed at the receiver. Based on the bucket-filling analysis for the hybrid ARQ process with mixed IR and repetitions, we obtain the error rates by applying the union-Bhattacharyya (UB) bound for parallel channels. We then form the throughput optimization of hybrid ARQ with mixed combining and obtain the optimal assignment rates and modulation set. The results show that the mixed combining performs better than non-adaptive IR and Chase combining based hybrid ARQ schemes.

A wireless mesh network (WMN) serves to extend the coverage of access points (APs) by means of relay nodes (RNs) that forward data between mobile nodes (MNs) and an AP. This concept reduces deployment costs by exchanging the wires between APs by a wireless backbone. Unfortunately, this also reduces capacity, owing to multiple transmissions of the same data packet on its multi-hop route. Hence, different mechanisms to increase the capacity of WMNs are investigated, one of them being transmit power control. By limiting the transmission power, interference on other links is reduced. As a consequence, it should be possible for them to use more susceptible and thus higher- rate modulation- and coding schemes (MCSs), which improves the system capacity. Unfortunately, the reduction of the transmission power has also the effect that the received signal power is reduced, which then requires more robust (lower-rate) MCSs, reducing capacity. In this paper, we use an analytical framework to compute the upper capacity bound of wireless mesh networks (WMNs) with and without transmit power control. The comparison shows that the negative influence of the power control dominates the positive.

Energy is a primary constraint in the design and deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) since sensor nodes are typically powered by batteries with a limited capacity. Since radio communication is, in general, the most energy hungry operation in a sensor node, most of the techniques proposed to extend the lifetime of a WSN have focused on limiting transmission/reception of data, for instance, through data compression. Since sensor nodes are equipped with limited computational and storage resources, enabling compression requires specifically designed algorithms. In this paper, we propose a lossy compressor based on a differential pulse code modulation scheme with quantization of the differences between consecutive samples. The quantization parameters, which allow achieving the desired trade-off between compression performance and information loss, are determined by a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. Experiments carried out on three datasets collected by real WSN deployments show that our approach can achieve significant compression ratios despite negligible reconstruction errors.

In this paper, we consider a MIMO multiuser system in a multipath fading channel. We design a blind receiver for a differential space-time coded modulation. A linear estimator projects the received signal onto the same subspace of the MMSE filter. The system works because of the differential encoding of the information matrices. Numerical results show that the blind receiver has the same performance of the unknown MMSE filter.

We present an analytical approach to determine the performance of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) transmission over unfaded Gaussian channels. In particular, we derive expressions for bit-error rate and cutoff rate assuming general quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Different from previously proposed methods, our analysis is valid for arbitrary labeling rules and results in simple closed-form expressions. The key idea is to utilize a simplification to estimate the probability density function of reliability metrics, which is tight for signal-to-noise ratio regions of interest for BICM systems with moderate coding complexity such as, e.g., convolutional coded BICM systems. The usefulness of the proposed analytical approach is validated through numerical and simulation results for a number of BICM transmission examples.

In this paper we investigate the interaction of channel code and modulation (i.e., the bitrate) of wireless transmissions and application layer forward error correction in the context of media streaming. To this end, we design a multimedia delivery protocol based on systematic network coding with partial feedback for reliable broadcast streaming over WLANs. Differently from other work, our approach takes into account the trade-off between (i) exploiting feedback-based encoded retransmissions at the multimedia broadcast source to compensate for the lack of MAC-layer error recovery mechanisms, and (ii) the efficient use of the wireless channel resources as given by the selected modulation scheme and the amount of feedback messages. The proposed protocol is tailored to the delay/packet loss rate demands of multimedia traffic and uses a combination of modulation rate and a forward error correction overhead which jointly leads to a minimal channel usage.
