Using equiprobable M-PAM/QAM constellation instead of Gaussian-distributed signal suffers performance loss, and the ultimate performance loss in high SNR regime is 1.53 dB. In this paper, we propose a new shaping method to optimize equiprobable constellations. The obtained PSK-PAM constellations can achieve performance gain in sense of mutual information by up to 0.3 dB and 0.57 dB over 16 QAM and 64 QAM, respectively. The new constellations are then applied to bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) and the performance gain over M-QAM is verified.

This paper describes the LED dimming control system using ADPCM (adaptive differential pulse code modulation). ADPCM accurately controls the LED current with high resolution. The ADPCM also reduces the RFI (radio frequency intensity) because of spreading out the harmonic current of pulses. Additionally, this method makes it easier to increase the control accuracy.

We consider unequal error-protection schemes obtained by means of two-level superposition coding. The performance over additive white Gaussian noise channels is investigated for optimal maximum-likelihood decoding as well as for a suboptimal decoding strategy based on interference cancellation. Assuming that linear codes are used, we evaluate, for both strategies, analytical approximations of the word-error rate, based on the union bound. As in the case of turbo codes and turbo-coded modulations, the derivation exploits the concept of uniform interleaving, and the bounds are in excellent agreement with the simulation results obtained using iterative decoding. The analytical expressions are useful for code design and for the selection of decoding strategies providing a suitable performance/complexity tradeoff.

The frequency bands used by secondary systems such as cognitive radio (CR) and ultra-wideband (UWB) systems are subject to various forms of non-Gaussian noise and interference including co-channel interference caused by the primary user and other secondary systems and man-made impulsive noise. For secondary systems employing the popular combination of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) it has been recently shown that robustness against the negative effects of non-Gaussian impairments can be achieved by replacing the conventional L 2 -norm metric for Viterbi decoding with an L p - norm metric. However, in order to achieve high performance, the metric parameter p has to be optimized for the underlying type of noise. In this paper, we propose two adaptive algorithms for online optimization of p. The first algorithm is based on a maximum-likelihood parameter estimation framework. The second algorithm is based on the direct minimization of the asymptotic bit error rate of L p -norm decoding. Simulation results show that both algorithms have excellent performance and that the resulting adaptive L p -norm metric outperforms other popular metrics in non-Gaussian noise channels.

This paper presents a cross-layer approach for optimizing the delay performance of a multiuser diversity system with heterogeneous block-fading channels and a delay-sensitive bursty-traffic. We consider the downlink of a time-slotted multiuser system employing opportunistic scheduling with fair performance at the medium access (MAC) layer and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with power control at the physical layer. Assuming individual user buffers which temporarily store the arrival traffic of users at the MAC layer, we first present a large deviations based statistical model to evaluate the delay-bound violation of packets in the user buffers. Aiming at minimizing the delay probability of the individual users, we then optimize the AMC and power control module subject to a target packet-error rate constraint. In the case of a quantized feedback channel, we also present a constant-power AMC based opportunistic scheduling scheme. Numerical and simulation results are provided to evaluate the delay performance of the proposed adaptation schemes in a multiuser setup.

Iterative decoding was not originally introduced as the solution to an optimization problem rendering the analysis of its convergence very difficult. In this paper, we investigate the link between iterative decoding and classical optimization techniques. We first show that iterative decoding can be rephrased as two embedded minimization processes involving the Fermi-Dirac distance. Based on this new formulation, an hybrid proximal point algorithm is first derived with the additional advantage of decreasing a desired criterion. In a second part, an hybrid minimum entropy algorithm is proposed with improved performance compared to the classical iterative decoding. Even if this paper focus on iterative decoding for BICM, the results can be applied to the large class of turbo-like decoders.

Watermarking is a potential method for copyright protection and multimedia data authentication in the Internet. The watermarking process can be considered as a communication task, where the watermarking acting like information embedded into a host image, which acts like noise in a communication channel susceptible to all kinds of attacks acting like as jamming. In this paper, a novel watermarking scheme using code division multiple access (CDMA) modulation is proposed to achieve a superior performance in terms of robustness and imperceptibility. In the proposed scheme, three watermark bits are modulated to five bits CDMA code. Then the CDMA code is embedded in the coefficients of a DWT domain. To explore the utility and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme, simulations under various conditions are conducted. The empirical results show that our proposed scheme can stand up against most common attacks.

Communication over delay-constrained block-fading channels with discrete inputs and imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is studied. The CSIT mismatch is modeled as a Gaussian random variable, whose variance decays as a power of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We focus on the large-SNR behavior of the outage probability when transmit power control is used. We derive the outage exponent as a function of the system parameters, including the CSIT noise variance exponent and the exponent of the peak power constraint. It is shown that CSIT, even if noisy, is always beneficial and leads to significant gains in terms of exponents. It is also shown that when precoders are used at the transmitter, further exponent gains can be attained at the expense of higher decoding complexity.

Statistics obtained during demodulation are used in a direct-sequence spread-spectrum packet radio network to govern the adjustment of transmitter power within the first few packets of a session. The statistics are also employed by an adaptive transmission protocol to select the modulation parameters and the rate of the error-control code for each packet. The power-adjustment protocol uses the statistics to ensure that the transmitter power level is high enough to satisfy the signal strength requirements at the receiver and low enough to prevent unnecessary interference to nearby radios. We describe a protocol for which modulation and coding parameters are adapted to achieve the most efficient combination for the given channel conditions. We evaluate the performance of each protocol for several channels. The protocols are not given any information about the type of channel or the channel parameters, yet they are able to use the demodulator statistics to efficiently set the initial power level and adapt transmissions throughout the session.
