The present paper deals with design and development of a generalized parametrizable modulator (GPM) that can perform Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) modulation and quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation in a reconfigurable baseband modulator for software defined radio (SDR) architecture. GMSK is the underlying modulation scheme for the global system for mobile (GSM) standard, while QPSK technique is the basic modulation scheme for code division multiple access (CDMA) standard. Although GMSK is an inherently non-linear modulation technique, the present work uses a linearly approximated GMSK technique to take the advantage of the simplicity of the filter structure. The normalised error in amplitude as a function of modulation index and bandwidth time product has been simulated. The proposed GPM is capable of working at a maximum data rate of 13.75 Mbps, thus satisfying the requirements of almost all 2G and 3G air interface standards. The GPM can perform QPSK using four pulse shaping filters, two raised cosine (RC) filters and two root raised cosine (RRC) filters. The proposed GPM architecture is implemented on a Spartan 3E starter kit.

This paper presents a new design method for reducing power dissipation of Viterbi decoder using variable wordlength architectures in wireless bit-interleaved coded modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (BICMOFDM) systems. The proposed method observes wireless communication quality and adjusts a wordlength in order to keep a desirable PER. Two types of the Viterbi decoder are used for this evaluation. When we use the variable wordlength instead of 8-bit fixed wordlength, the radix-2 Viterbi decoder reduce its power by maximums of 26.3% and 24% under multipath fading environments, respectively. The radix-4 Viterbi decoder reduced its power by maximums of 31.6% and 28.8% under the same conditions.

A coded modulation scheme is described which improves the error performance of constant envelope data transmission without requiring more bandwidth. This is achieved by controlling the minimum channel symbol duration by run-length limited (RLL) encoding. It is shown that the same amount of information can be transmitted within the same minimum channel symbol duration with a coding gain of 4 dB compared with the uncoded modulation. The bandwidth is analyzed using the power spectra of channel signals. As a practical application, we consider bandwidth limited transmission with a restriction on the maximum transmitted power. Following a discussion of a coded modulation principle, constructed RLL codes and the evaluation of their code performances are provided, and the simulation results for BPSK and 2-FSK modulations are presented. Comparisons are strictly made on the basis of equal information rate and the same minimum channel symbol duration.

A new, matrix-based, stochastic method for the cyclic spectral analysis of pulse position modulation with time-hopping multiple access (TH-PPM) ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) signals, based on their Markov chain representation, is proposed. Explicit expression for the cyclic spectrum of TH-PPM signal is derived and spectral correlation characterization is performed. Some theoretical and graphed results for the spectral correlation characterization of multiple-access UWB-IR systems with binary pulse position modulation and user specific TH coding are presented, as well.

The canonical representation of speech constitutes a perfect reconstruction (PR) analysis-synthesis system. Its parameters are the autoregressive (AR) model coefficients, the pitch period and the voiced and unvoiced components of the excitation represented as transform coefficients. Each set of parameters may be operated on independently. A time-frequency unvoiced excitation (TFUNEX) model is proposed that has high time resolution and selective frequency resolution. Improved time-frequency fit is obtained by using for antialiasing cancellation the clustering of pitch-synchronous transform tracks defined in the modulation transform domain. The TFUNEX model delivers high-quality speech while compressing the unvoiced excitation representation about 13 times over its raw transform coefficient representation for wideband speech.

This paper describes a transceiver design based on clustered ternary code sequences as a form of modulation in order to achieve good interference suppression with a low cost and low complexity implementation. The use of ternary code sequences allows for flexible receiver designs, so that the same transmitted signals can be detected by coherent, differential and non-coherent receivers. By applying cyclic-shifts on the base ternary code sequence, an inherent coding gain from orthogonal signaling can be achieved without any external channel coder. Our pulse-clustering proposal makes use of both time and code domains for greater SOP suppression than the pure time domain scheme commonly used in pulse position modulation (PPM). In addition, pulse-clustering transmission of ternary chips enables a low sampling rate at the receiver.

Carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) is the conventional medium access method used in wireless ad hoc networks. it can be enhanced as a space-division based CSMA (namely, SD-CSMA) by using multi-antenna techniques, which allows concurrent link communications in the network. In this paper, we present a MAC design that can adaptively switch between CSMA and SD-CSMA in multi-antenna based ad hoc networks. We first investigate the CSMA mode and the SD-CSMA mode by considering several practical constraints from MIMO physical layer, which include imperfect channel estimation, modulation and coding scheme, MMSE detection, power constraint and packet length. We then propose a selection criterion that adaptively switches between CSMA and SD-CSMA based on current wireless channels among nodes. Simulation results verify that the proposed design can outperform both the CSMA mode and the SD-CSMA mode in terms of aggregate throughput.

A communication system using multilayer coded modulation is introduced to detail the basic principles of hierarchical combined equalization based on linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) algorithm. A simplified hierarchical equalizer’s extrinsic information of base-layer for 4-QAM multilayer coded modulation is presented. A new hierarchical equalization method of base layer is applied to multilayer modulation. Simulation results show that compared with conventional equalization method, the proposed hierarchical equalization method works effectively for multilayer coded modulation and the simplified equalizer’s extrinsic information algorithm is able to reduce the calculation complexity degrees of equalizer’s extrinsic information without the loss of BER performance.

In a QPSK modulated DSSS receiver, a novel SNR estimator is introduced along with its implementation in FPGA devices. To improve the estimator's precision, an algorithm based on curve fitting is applied. The estimated amplitude and amplitude offset is treated as independent variable and dependent variable respectively, and a curve fitting tool is used to get the modification of SNR estimation. The precision of SNR estimation is improved remarkably by modifying the original SNR estimation according to the modification. Finally the performance is tested and analyzed.
