It is known that rotated multidimensional constellations can be used effectively to achieve full-rate and full-diversity transmission in block fading channels. However, optimal decoding complexity is exponential with the number of fading blocks (or degrees of freedom). In this paper, we propose a reduced-complexity iterative receiver structure operating on a block basis for coded modulation schemes with rotated constellations. The proposed detector is based on iterative forward and backward filtering followed by a channel decoder that uses a priori log- likelihood ratios (LLR) of coded symbols. Forward and feedback filters are jointly optimized according to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion to minimize the spatial interference induced by rotation. It is observed that the proposed structure achieves full diversity and performance close to outage probability for rotated inputs even with simple Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) rotations.

In order to improve the control performance of some electro-hydraulic digital control system and simplify the system a kind of combination digital valve was designed in the paper. Based on pulse code modulation principle, the combination digital valve which is made of many on-off valves has a lot of advantage such as being simple in structure, good in anti-pollution and cheap, so it is suitable for application in electro-hydraulic servo control system control by the computer of some large-scale mining machinery equipment like the long-distance belt conveyer.

The Link-16 is the tactical data link utilized by the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS). The JTIDS system is important due to its wide use by U.S. armed forces, NATO, and other allied militaries. Link-16 is a hybrid frequency-hopped/direct sequence spread spectrum system that utilizes minimum-shift keying (MSK) to modulate the chips, cyclical code-shift keying (CCSK) to modulate the 32-chip symbols, and a (31, 15) Reed Solomon (RS) code with hard decision decoding (HDD) for forward error correction (FEC). This paper analyzes an alternative waveform compatible with the existing Link-16 which uses orthogonal modulation such as Walsh codes vice CCSK and errors-and-erasures decoding (EED) vice hard decision decoding. Both of these modifications are suggested for enhanced bit error rate (BER) performance. Orthogonal modulation for Link-16 with HDD has been explored before. Shows that the proposed alternative waveform outperforms the Link-16 waveform slightly when HDD is used. This paper reveals potential further improvement through the use of EED. Currently, the Link-16 waveform is received noncoherently at the chip level, but in this paper the performance of the alternative Link-16-compatible waveform is evaluated for coherent as well as for noncoherent demodulation in order to ascertain the performance possible if coherent demodulation becomes practical. The performance of the alternative waveform for the relatively benign case where additive white Gaussian noise is the only noise present as well as when pulse-noise interference is present is investigated for both coherent and noncoherent demodulation.

Implementation of an efficient CQI feedback mechanism is the focus of the study presented in this paper. OFDMA-based systems such as 3 GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) downlink and WiMax require an accurate CQI feedback to allow effective operation of the adaptive modulation and coding. Besides accuracy, such mechanism should impose only a low overhead when using uplink resources for conveying the CQI information. Unlike the Best-M CQI feedback algorithms where only the M highest CQI's and their locations are reported, a full-band feedback method compresses the whole CQI vector and transmits the compressed vector in the uplink channel. In this paper, application of the Haar transform for a full-band CQI report is investigated and its performance is compared against Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT)-based compression schemes. Full-band Haar CQI feedback offers a flexible process for CQI feedback that can be easily adapted to different operating scenarios. Key features of Haar compression are incremental update and very low complexity for compression and decompression. Simulation results indicate that the full-band Haar scheme achieves significantly higher throughput than the DCT-based schemes at low speeds and about the same performance at higher speeds.

We consider, in this paper, channel allocation and rate adaptation scheme for relayed transmission over correlated fading channels via cross-layer design. Specifically, jointly considering the data link layer buffer occupancy and channel quality at both the source and relay nodes, we develop an optimal channel allocation and rate adaptation policy for a dual-hop relayed transmission. As such the overall transmit power for the relayed system is minimized while a target packet dropping rate (PDR) due to buffer over flows is guaranteed. In order to find such an optimal policy, the channel allocation and rate adaptation transmission framework is formulated as a constraint Markov decision process (CMDP). The PDR performance of the optimal policy is compared with that of two conventional suboptimal schemes, namely the channel quality based and the buffer occupancy based channel allocation schemes. Numerical results show that for a given power budget, the optimal scheme requires significantly less power than the conventional schemes in order to maintain a target PDR.

Relay networks have attracted great attention in recent years due to their ability to extend the coverage of cellular systems. Their capacity is often analyzed by the max-flow min- cut theorem which provides an upper bound on the true capacity. However, the exact capacity is generally still unknown. This paper applies information combining to determine the achievable rate of a simple relay network. Presupposing an ideal code of appropriate rate and optimum symbol-by-symbol soft-output decoding at the relay, this semi-analytical approach delivers upper and lower bounds on the achievable mutual information of the network. The obtained results identify three different regions concerning the optimum rate of the code. Simulations of a nearly capacity achieving half-rate repeat accumulate code confirm the semi-analytic results.

Noncoherently detected frequency shift keying can be used in fast fading environments where it is difficult to track the channel. In this paper we present two methods to improve the performance of iteratively detected OFDM-MFSK. OFDM-MFSK is a combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and noncoherent M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) that was developed as a robust transmission method for fast time varying channels. The first method increases the number of bits per label and therefore leads to an increased data rate, but also to an ambiguous mapping which has to be resolved by the channel decoder. In the second method, a precoder is inserted between the channel coder and the mapper, leading to a system of three serially concatenated codes. To analyze the iterative behavior of the receiver, we will use three dimensional EXIT charts, which allow us to predict the performance. The intention of both methods is to adapt the channel code to the modulation scheme in order to improve the performance of the iterative receiver.

We propose a novel cooperative diversity using multilevel coded modulation which can perform with arbitrary number of cooperative nodes. The proposed multilevel coded cooperation makes use of a signal superposition, which is one form of analog network coding techniques. Due to the ability and flexibility of a multilevel coded modulation, the proposed multilevel coded cooperation can outperform not only a time-division cooperative diversity but also a signal superposition cooperative diversity in the case where the number of cooperating nodes is more than two. Moreover, achievable outage probability and channel capacity are analyzed and two design criteria based on the analysis are proposed.

In this paper, the performance of double-binary turbo coded time hopping-pulse position modulation ultra wide band (TH-PPM UWB) systems with multiple receive antennas is analyzed in a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model. Because the UWB channel is highly time scattered and a transmit waveform's power is limited to low level, a data signal is distorted by channel error. Thus, we apply the double-binary turbo code to the UWB systems with multiple receive antennas. From the simulation results, the double-binary turbo coded signaling scheme improves the bit error rate performance.

In this paper, a new power allocation and bit loading policy is defined for those systems working with a preselected binary channel code and specific bit error rate (BER) requirements. It consists on the maximization of the spectral efficiency with a constraint on the average mutual information per coded bit (bit MI), exploiting the relationship of the bit MI with the BER and the code rate. An irregular modulation approach is employed in order to express the policy as a convex optimization problem, solved without the need of greedy algorithms. Results are compared with those obtained with other algorithms in the literature.
