This paper presents capacity limits of novel position aware adaptive cellular communication systems exploiting channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter (CSIT). The position aware adaptive communication systems are benchmarked against state-of-the-art adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) systems that use only feedback or predict CSIT in addition to the feedback CSI. Numerical results demonstrate that position aware adaptive systems operate close to the channel capacity over a large range of feedback delays and channel variability. Further, position aware adaptive communication systems achieve large capacity gains compared to state-of-the-art AMC systems for medium to large feedback delays.

Wireless Multiuser receivers suffer from their relatively higher computational complexity that prevents widespread use of this technique. In addition, one of the main characteristics of multi-channel communications that can severely degrade the performance is the inconsistent and low values of SNR that result in high BER and poor channel capacity. It has been shown that the computational complexity of a multiuser receiver can be reduced by using the transformation matrix (TM) algorithm [4]. In this paper, we provide quantification of SNR based on the computational complexity of TM algorithm. We show that the reduction of complexity results high and consistent values of SNR that can consequently be used to achieve a desirable BER performance. In addition, our simulation results also suggest that the high and consistent values of SNR can be achieved for a desirable BER performance. The performance measure adopted in this paper is the consistent values of SNR.

In this paper we study the impact of the overlapping between neighboring MPCs (multipath component) on the performance of channel estimation. We consider IR-UWB (impulse radio) signals, and the IEEE802.15.3a and IEEE802.15.4a UWB channel models. We show that for a pulse width (PW) sufficiently smaller than the average MPC rate of arrival (ROA) the probability to have more than three overlapping MPCs is relatively small. We derive the CRBs (Cramer Rao bound) for the joint estimation of the MPC gain and TOA (time of arrival) in the case of up to three overlapping MPCs. We compute also the average CRBs. We show that the CRBs obtained by averaging more than 80% of possible cases of the channel, are very close to the bounds obtained under the non-overlapping assumption (NOLA).

A novel transmission scheme of bit-interleaved coded M-ary pulse-position modulation (M-PPM) in free-space wireless optical communications is proposed. The detection method and performance of bit-interleaved coded M-PPM system in atmosphere turbulence channels are studied. The maximum a posterior detection is used to calculate the bit metric information at the receiver in bit-interleaved coded M-PPM system. The bit metric information is used to soft-decision decode in Viterbi decoder. Comparing with the conventional detection and hard-decision decoding, the maximum a posterior detection and soft-decision decoding can improve the performance of coded M-PPM systems in the atmosphere turbulence channels. The numerical simulation results of bit-interleaved coded M-PPM systems in the atmosphere turbulence channels with Rayleigh fading and log- normal fading show that the bit-interleaved coded M-PPM is efficient.

Adaptive bit-interleaved coded modulation (ABICM) is attractive for rapidly varying mobile radio channels due to its robustness to imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Novel ABCIM method based on the expurgated bound is proposed. This method improves upon previously investigated ABICM techniques since it is able to maintain the target bit error rate for diverse CSI conditions. Spectral efficiencies of the proposed ABICM method, adaptive trellis-coded modulation, and uncoded adaptive modulation are compared for an adaptive mobile radio orthogonal frequency division-multiplex (OFDM) system aided by the long-range fading prediction. It is demonstrated that ABICM is much less sensitive to prediction errors than the other two adaptive modulation techniques, which do not employ interleaving, but reliable fading prediction is still necessary to achieve high spectral efficiency of ABICM for practical channel conditions.

A fundamental task associated with the use of error-correcting codes is recovering the original codeword from the corrupted received word. In this paper we develop a simulation program for the Reed-Solomon codes with an error correction capability of [(n-k)/2]. Three RS codes are chosen to be simulated using MATLAB with quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) scheme in AWGN channel. The symbol error rate (SER) performance was evaluated and compared with its theoretical calculations.

On the basis of analysis results of qualitative characteristics of existing radio relay lines with frequency modulation and criteria of noise stability of communication channels with two-level modulation QAM-FM approaches to designing of the integrated shaper of high-speed data flows and television programs are formulated, power efficiency of the offered method for digital modernization of radio relay lines is estimated. Preliminary study results for a trunk throughput (total speed at level 68 Mbit/c) with use of a two-level modulation QAM-FM in the analogue radio relay line equipment of ldquoKurs-4rdquo type are presented for the broadcasting mode of 6 television programs and 16xE1digital data flows. Directions of the further researches are presented.

For UWB to be a competitive solution in mobile devices, power consumption of the modem has to be optimized. The focus of this paper is to decrease the power consumption of the modem at physical layer by trading frequency diversity when operating at data rates up to 200 Mbps and by changing the constraint length of convolutional code and using QPSK when operating at data rates 320 Mbps and up. We show more than 50% and 25% gains in power consumption at physical layer with additional 1 dB and 3 dB received SNR at data rates 53.3 Mbps and 480 Mbps, respectively.

An efficient and flexible air interface is the necessary condition for enabling high data rates next generation wireless systems. A practical answer to this need consists in exploiting channel state information at the transmitter for an adaptive and efficient use of the available radio link resources. This paper contributes with a novel strategy for the allocation of the sub-carrier transmit power in the case of a wireless system featuring: i) bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM); ii) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM); iii) multiple antenna profile (MIMO). The proposed power-allocation algorithm aims at maximizing the so-called goodput performance metric for packet transmissions employing automatic repeat request (ARQ) schemes. In addition, it is also proven to be near-optimum in maximizing the input/output mutual information of the MIMO-OFDM subchannels. Numerical simulations over typical wireless indoor scenarios confirm the effectiveness of the procedure when applied in the context of MIMO-BICM-OFDM systems.

A programmable spread spectrum clock generator (PSSCG) using fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) is presented. Spreading is achieved by modulating the feedback divider using a triangular wave through a SigmaDelta modulator. In order to allow wide spreading ratios a new technique is adopted to keep the triangular wave within the input range of the SigmaDelta modulator. The clock frequency is programmable from 8-280 MHz with center and down spreading (0.5%, 1%, 2%, 4%). The RMS period jitter is 8.7 ps at 280 MHz. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction is 18.1 dB at 4% center spreading. The proposed PSSCG is designed using a CMOS 0.18 mum 6-metal technology and has an active area of 0.66 times 0.45 mm 2 .
