In this paper, we present two new feedback reduction schemes, namely the network mode selection-based feedback (NMF) and the user mode selection-based feedback (UMF), to reduce the feedback load needed for opportunistic scheduling in the OFDMA downlink system. The two schemes are designed to select either the selective feedback (SF) mode which feeds back the fine-grained condition of a part of the channels or the bit-map based feedback (BF) mode which feeds back the coarse-grained condition of all the channels using 1-bit for each channel, depending on the channel conditions of the users. Specifically, the NMF scheme makes the BS determine the more desirable feedback mode by predicting and comparing the average total throughputs of the two modes for the given statistical channel characteristics of the users. The UMF scheme makes each user determine its own feedback mode based on both its channel realization and the recommendation of the network. Numerical results reveal that the proposed NMF and UMF schemes achieve significant performance gain over the existing feedback reduction schemes with similar feedback load.

This paper proposes a bit-interleaved coded transmission with multilevel modulation for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. In the proposed system, multiple layers are encoded and interleaved together, using one encoder and one interleaver, and then mapped by hierarchical symbol mapping. A corresponding receiver structure is presented, where multiple layers can be decoupled by iterative MIMO detection and equalization with ordered successive interference cancellation (SIC) and full log-likelihood ratio (LLR). Full LLR provides reliable estimates of transmit signals, and significantly improves the performance of proposed multilevel modulation. Simulation results show that the proposed system has better performance than conventional modulation schemes such as bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and multilevel BICM (MLBICM).

We present field experiment results on multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in the E-UTRA downlink. We measured the throughput performance of 4×4 MIMO precoding with 1- to 4-stream transmission. Time variation characteristics of throughput, SINR, and antenna correlations are compared to evaluate the selection criteria for the number of streams. The throughput performance of 2×2 MIMO precoding are also evaluated and compared with the results of the 4×4 MIMO case. Based on the evaluation of the field experiment results, we verify that the throughput is maximized using 3- or 4-stream transmission. Furthermore, we verify that 2-stream transmission is also effective for 4×4 MIMO in an actual propagation environment, since high antenna correlation sometimes happens on which the throughput performance of 3- or 4-stream transmission is severely degraded. Evaluation results also show that the estimated gain of rank adaptation is about 11.6% for 4×4 MIMO and about 6% for 2×2 MIMO.

In this paper, we study the resource allocation problem in the downlink of an OFDMA system. Taking into account the constraint that each user can be assigned only one modulation and coding scheme (MCS), our goal is to maximize the system utility, which can be either the sum rate of users or certain fairness metric. The joint subcarrier, rate, and power allocation problem is formulated, and a straightforward suboptimal algorithm is proposed to solve this problem efficiently. Through computer simulation, our proposed algorithm is verified to be better in performance compared to the existing ones.

The Bell labs layered space-time (BLAST) architecture pioneered by Foschini was found to achieve high spectral efficiency with moderate complexity. However, the redundancy in error correcting codes in BLAST receiver is not used in detection improvement, as detection and decoding are carried out separately. In this paper, we investigate a new approach for improved performance of BLAST based on multi-stage decoding (MSD) and unequal transmit power allocation among layers, for transmission over flat quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. The use of MSD exploits the inherent redundancy in the employed channel codes to improve detection in BLAST without the need for complex iterative decoding approaches. In addition, we investigate unequal transmit power allocation among layers for transmission over flat quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. We first derive a theorem for power allocation that maximizes outage capacity. We then find the unequal power allocation required to guarantee equal outage capacities among layers in BLAST combined with MSD detection. The proposed power allocation simplifies implementation and improves error performance. Simulation results show that the proposed architecture significantly outperforms existing BLAST schemes in terms of error performance for transmission over flat quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels.

A performance trade-off investigation is carried out between different possible uplink multiple access schemes, that are based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), for International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT) Advanced systems. Between the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) preceded systems with different subcarrier allocation mappings and systems lacking DFT-precoders, Block Interleaved Frequency Division Multiple Access (B-IFDMA) is shown to provide a good trade-off between the frequency diversity collected, envelope properties achieved, and channel estimation performance compared to the other mapping schemes. The schemes are analyzed in the presence of the different possible modules which include equalizers, modulators, interleavers, and channel codes. In particular, robust codes such as Turbo codes are able to collect the diversity provided by such schemes, and B-IFDMA systems is shown to be able to beat the other systems in bit error rate (BER) performance terms.

In this paper we present reduced-complexity high-performance iterative receivers for single-user MIMO systems that employ OFDM with bit-interleaved coded modulation. The proposed inner-outer decoder structures exploit the Soft-Output M algorithm (SOMA) to calculate bit-likelihood estimates via a limited search on a tree. A key element of the proposed designs is the way the SOMA front-end adapts at each iteration to new extrinsic information. This front-end defines the tree, both in terms of the order in which symbols are considered, as well as in terms of the subspaces used in the likelihood calculations at each depth in the tree. The proposed SOMA front-ends are different from the conventional QR-decomposition front-ends and provide a systematic way to adapt both the order and the subspaces at each iteration in an iterative decoding structure. Simulations for 4 × 4 16 QAM systems show that the proposed iterative receivers can yield significant performance gains over receivers using non-adaptive conventional front-ends.

The HSDPA system evolution introduces new modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) that use 64 QAM modulation in order to increase the maximum achievable throughput. We propose in this work to evaluate with a realistic approach the new mobile categories performance in macro-cell environments. This approach is based on link level simulations and drive test measurements. By considering a classic network configuration and using the LMMSE equalizer with receiver diversity, we show that there is no throughput gain compared to Release 5 MCSs using 16-QAM modulation. However, interesting throughput enhancements are obtained when the base station increases its transmitted power to 40 Watt.

We present an algorithm to reduce the power consumption of single-carrier data transmission over twisted-pair copper cables for future IEEE networking physical connectivity standard, 40GBASE-T. High-complexity coding schemes employed for multi-gigabits transmission systems for higher reliability, e.g., system margin, is one of the major sources of power dissipation. The proposed method reduces the total power consumption by properly partitioning the channel into few sub-channels and using lower complexity coding schemes for the sub-channel with less insertion loss while the margin requirement is met over the entire channel.
