In this paper a new complete technique using one dimensional Walsh coding to improve the robustness of watermarking in digital images is presented. The proposed technique inserts bits of binary handwritten signatures in the DCT blocks of a digital image. In the proposed method, the 1-D Walsh functions are used to encode the signature before being embedded in the cover image. The 1-D Walsh coding can be applied either horizontally or vertically. The work was carried out using the horizontal 1-D Walsh coding. By utilizing this type of coding, each row of the signature's vectors will be replaced by the Walsh code and queue them horizontally to get the modulated signal. In the decoding process, the original signature's bits are identified by the use of odd and even functions. The proposed technique gives good image quality and is robust against JPEG compression.

The forward link capacity of a cdma2000 lx system is power limited. Therefore, average data rate (ADR), link efficiency, and receiver signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are the key factors for capacity improvement. In this paper, we introduce the new features of the forward fundamental channel (F-FCH) with radio configuration (RC) 11 for 1x Revision E that is being standardized at the Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) and advanced receivers for mobile stations (MS), targeted at these key factors. Simulations show that the new RC together with interference cancellation and a new voice codec more than doubles the forward link capacity of existing 1x systems, and more than triples the capacity with dual receive antennas. The capacity gain is achieved without any increase in voice latency or any degradation in voice quality.

Intelligent robotic navigation requires precise positioning information. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) enables such navigation by providing precise timing, velocity and positioning information to any adequately equipped receiver world-wide. A core capability of these receivers is to identify all visible satellites from a snapshot of received signal. This identification process, called signal acquisition, must be performed in shortest possible time in practical solutions. Conventionally search for the desired satellite in a serial fashion which involves large number of computations. Recently Fourier transform based methods were proposed to speed up the processing. However such a solution requires complex domain signal processing. We propose a partial-code serial search algorithm that significantly reduces the computational time with same reliability of acquisition results.

A Marx-topology klystron modulator is under development for the International Linear Collider (ILC) project. It is envisioned as a lower cost, smaller footprint, and higher reliability alternative to the present, bouncer-topology, baseline design. The application requires 120 kV (+/-0.5%), 140 A, 1.6 ms pulses at a rate of 5 Hz. The Marx constructs the high voltage pulse by combining, in series, a number of lower voltage cells. The Marx employs solid state elements; IGBTs and diodes, to control the charge, discharge and isolation of the cells. Active compensation of the output is used to achieve the voltage regulation while minimizing the stored energy. The developmental testing of a first generation prototype, P1, has been completed. This modulator has been integrated into a test stand with a 10 MW L-band klystron, where each is undergoing life testing. Development of a second generation prototype, P2, is underway. The P2 is based the P1 topology but incorporates an alternative cell configuration to increase redundancy and improve availability. Status updates for both prototypes are presented.

A serial unequal error protection (UEP) code system for use with information sources that contain a mixture of both important and less important data is proposed. To achieve UEP, the proposed scheme uses a form of trellis coded modulation (TCM) which encodes the data by switching between two codes that use different signal constellations. The proposed system uses two ring signal constellations (2RING). No extra information about which code was used is added. The receiver decides which code was used by examining the received signal points. In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the 2RING signal constellation is presented, and the effectiveness of the system for AWGN channels is shown using computer simulations.

Conventional transmission schemes perform poorly in wireless channels. In this paper, an analytical adaptive model for wireless links via heuristic TCP/FEC functions is proposed with chosen modulation format for transporting mobile MPEG-4 video. A wireless channel introduces that the bit errors at the link-layer packets are due to time-invariant features over UMTS network and consequently the optimal perceived video quality at the client can be improved when adaptive TCP throughput after error-corrections is achieved for the certain predefined system threshold of the residual packet error rate. The simulation results show that a video quality can dynamically adapt to the optimal FEC codes at an appropriate selection for modulation scaling in the radio-link layer.

Future cellular radio systems aim at maximizing the spectral efficiency. OFDMA radio resources are the scarce good with their dimensions bandwidth, time and space. Due to frequency selective fading the effective path-loss varies in all dimensions. Adaptive algorithms are available which allocate the best modulation and coding scheme depending on the expected SINR, as well as dynamic subchannel assignment which aims to choose the best subchannel for each user. This already boosts the performance of OFDMA system. However, these algorithms alone do not touch the transmitted power per subchannel. On the cell edge this is fine, but large areas are covered with a transmitted power exceeding the usually required SINR. In this paper we introduce a power control which saves power on the users within the cell. This leads to a reduced interference into neighbor cells, especially for future reuse one systems. Also some of the saved power can be used to boost transmissions at the cell edge. In this paper we introduce an adaptive power control concept and arrange it into a closed loop control system which contains blocks for all adaptive algorithms for modulation, power, subchannel usage and channel quality indication.

The paper presents a reliable method to generate on line pulse width modulation (PWM) signals with selected harmonic elimination (SHE) by using field programmable gate array (FPGA). These signals is used to drive voltage source inverter. Due to the complexity of solving the nonlinear equations, and impossibility to achieve the solution in real time and on line, therefore the solution is obtained off line for wide range of modulation index and as a results a huge of switching data to produce PWM patterns. These data are trained by implementing artificial neural networks (ANN). Then the ANN is hardwarely implemented by using an FPGA. The utilization of FPGA to ANN becomes very attractive since it allows fast hardware design and modification at low costs. This will enable to use SHEPWM to be applied on real time and on line. The details of the implementation on FPGA are described.

The data transmission system using octal continuous phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) modulation is designed for bandwidth and energy efficiency. The baseband pulse shaping technique is adopted for bandwidth efficiency, and the octal ring convolutional trellis code is adopted for energy efficiency. The system model is built and the components are described. Then the simplified baseband simulation model is built. Based on the simulation model, the system performance is studied using computer simulation. Both the theoretical analysis and computer simulation results show that the coded 8CPFSK system outperforms the uncoded 4CPFSK system when the signal to noise ratio is not too low. So it is suitable to use coded 8CPFSK system for data transmission.

In this paper, the performance of a non-binary turbo coded ultra wide band (UWB) system is analyzed and simulated in multi-user environments. A binary pulse position modulation-time hopping (BPPM-TH) UWB system is considered. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of such a UWB system can be substantially improved by increasing the number of iterations in the decoding process. Also, it is confirmed that non-binary turbo coding is very effective in increasing the number of simultaneous users for a given bit error probability requirement.
