In this paper, link adaptation, which dynamically selects modulation level and coding rate according to the channel condition, and several multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transmission modes are studied. As we know, the subchannels' signal-to-noise radio (SNR) by singular value decomposition (SVD) are unequal, which requires different modulation and coding schemes (MCS) to maximize the throughput. However, uniform channel decomposition (UCD) greatly reduces the coding and modulation complexity by decomposing the MIMO channel into multiple subchannels with identical capacity. This paper analyzes the post-detection SINR of different MIMO transmission modes and presents their throughput performance with link adaptation under the constraint of required packet error rate (PER). We show that UCD mode is the first choice at high SNR considering both coding/modulation complexity and throughput performance, while at low SNR, space-time block coding (STBC) mode outperforms other MIMO transmission modes.

In this paper a game theoretic approach to study the effect of constellation size on energy efficiency of MC DS CDMA system for M-QAM modulation is studied. A non cooperative game is proposed in which each user seeks to choose its transmit power, transmit symbol rate as well as the constellation size in order to maximize its own utility while satisfying its delay quality of service (QoS) constraint. The utility function used here measures the number of reliable bits transmitted per joule of energy consumed and it is particularly suitable for energy-constrained networks. It is shown that in order to maximize the userpsilas utility, a user must choose the lowest constellation size that can accommodate the userpsilas delay constraint. This strategy is different from one that could maximize spectral efficiency. Using this approach, the trade offs among energy efficiency, delay, throughput and constellation size are also studied and quantified. The effect of Trellis coded modulation on energy efficiency is discussed additionally.

This paper studies the computation of postprocessing signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) for maximum likelihood detector (MLD) in multiple-input and multiple output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) spatial multiplexing systems. We derive an effective post-MLD SINR for each spatial stream, which is computed as post minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) SINR plus gain factor, where the gain factor is adaptively computed based on the instantaneous channel and modulation format of interfering streams. The post-MLD SINR is then applied to modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection in adaptive modulation and coding. Simulation results show that the MCS selection using proposed post-MLD SINR can achieve throughput performance close to that of the optimum approach, and considerable gain can be achieved over linear-MMSE receiver.

In this paper a new digital passband modulation hierarchy has been proposed. It has the advantage of combining line coding and digital passband modulation in one entity, hence reducing the number of stages of the transmitter and the receiver. The new LCM enhances the transmitted signal with some desirable features such as favorable power spectral density, timing information, error detection and correction, hence, reducing bit synchronization complexity at the receiver, and improving the overall system performance.

Since the 70s Italy has had a pioneering approach to higher frequencies, at first at Ka band (20/30 GHz) with the Sirio experience (launched in 1978), when such a range was still a frontier, and then with Italsat F1 and F2 experiments in the 90s, studying Q and V bands in addition to Ka one as well. After those experiences, Italy through the Italian space agency (ASI) was one of the first European countries that have made an effort toward the exploitation of Q/V band in telecommunications. In 2004 ASI funded a feasibility study (phase A), called TRANSPONDERS, Italian acronym for ldquoresearch, analysis and study of Q/V payloads for telecommunicationsrdquo, aimed at studying and designing a payload to be used to fully characterize the channel at Q/V bands and to test novel adaptive interference/fading mitigation techniques such as ACM (adaptive coding and modulation). Finally, the feasibility and performance of preliminary broadband services in such frequencies can be verified through this study. A new phase has recently started (April 2008), called TRANSPONDERS-2 and leaded by Space Engineering S.p.A., to continue the achievements gained during the first phase. In this scenario, it is mandatory to identify pre-operative experimental missions aiming at fully verifying the feasibility of future Q/V bands satellite telecommunication applications. The experimental goals are mainly to test the effectiveness of propagation impairment mitigation techniques (PIMTs) in such frequency bands and the minimization of implementation risks for operative system characterized by a series of technological challenges.

In this paper, we study two-way amplify-and-forward relaying in conjunction with adaptive modulation over a multiple relay network. In order to keep the diversity order equal to the number of relays and maintain a low complexity, we consider the best relay selection scheme in this work. Based on the proposed selection criterion for the best relay, we analyze the average spectral efficiency by its approximated upper bound. In addition, we extend the proposed scheme to the case where a direct path between source and destination exists. Our numerical examples show that the proposed system offers a considerable gain in the spectral efficiency while satisfying the error rates requirements.

The field of power-line communications (PLC) has been maturing and therefore much research is aimed at making PLC technology cheaper. In this paper we investigate passive coupling circuits as an alternative to transformer-capacitor couplers, as the coupling transformer is a relatively expensive component. Various other sub-fields of PLC such as modulation and coding have received a lot of attention in recent years, whereas the sub-fields of coupling, filtering, impedance adaptation and protection have lagged behind. Most electronic circuits, especially filter circuits have been around for years and perhaps their design is sometimes viewed as exhausted. However, the nature of the power-line grid requires careful consideration, as sensitive modems are to be connected to the power-line network, via these coupling circuits. These couplers further have to withstand the strain of relatively large voltages and currents. Hence, sufficient time spent, designing and selecting coupling circuitry elements is essential to avoid unnecessary attenuation as well as possible damage to the more expensive communication circuitry.

This paper proposes a simple architecture for half-duplex cooperative systems which use amplify-and-forward (AF) as a relay strategy and one-dimensional modulations for source messages. The proposed solution uses the two orthogonal channels of quadrature modulation in order to allow a node to behave simultaneously as a source and a relay. We prove that the new scheme has similar performance to the conventional AF approach, and avoids error propagation problems of previously reported AF superposition schemes. The proposed technique is suitable for applications with low spectral efficiencies and practical adaptive systems where real modulations are implemented based on a quadrature modulation core.

This paper deals with the comparison in terms of goodput and fairness of different scheduling options for fixed WiMAX networks. An analytical approach has been adopted to determine the average system capacity for different scheduling options, thus highlighting that scheduling schemes have an important impact in WiMAX network planning. We have then compared via simulations different uplink scheduling options for the best effort (contention-based) traffic class with FTP traffic flows, such as: RR, token bucket-based, and M-LWDF. We have shown that M-LWDF can achieve a good trade-off between aggregated goodput maximization and a fair service provision.

The WiMAX system, based on the IEEE 802.16 standard offers a large degree of flexibility to allow optimal deployment in different scenarios. For that purpose it provides a large set of parameters to be configured and tuned. The paper introduces the main configuration parameters, to be planned ahead for a successful deployment of a mobile WiMAX system, and proposes a methodology to determine those parameters. The proposed methodology is an iterative process aimed at real world deployments where site layout is asymmetric and far from ideal hexagonal layout, traffic density and propagation conditions are not uniform and the nai¿ve approach of regular re-use factor based planning is not adequate.
