In this paper, we propose a novel architecture for hybrid radio frequency (RF)/free-space optics (FSO) wireless systems. In particular, we show that a hybrid system robust to all weather conditions is obtained by joint bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) of the bit steams transmitted over the RF and FSO sub-channels. An asymptotic performance analysis reveals that a properly designed convolutional code can exploit the diversity offered by the independent sub-channels. Furthermore, we develop a code design criterion and provide an efficient code search procedure. Simulation results show that hybrid RF/FSO systems with BICM outperform previously proposed hybrid systems employing a simple repetition code and selection diversity.

As a mainstream technology in the B3G TDD systems, TD-HSDPA (LCR TDD HSDPA, High-Speed Downlink Packet Access of Low Chip Rate TDD) adopts some key techniques to achieve high system throughput and high peak data rate, such as AMC (Adaptive modulation and coding) and HARQ (Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest). However, feedback delay is inevitable in practical TD-HSDPA systems due to the conventional scheduling mechanism, and its impact on wireless scheduling is critical. In this paper, the joint system performances of the key techniques are studied; furthermore, a new efficient scheduling algorithm is proposed. Compared to the conventional scheduling, the delay-restricted scheduling can reduce the feedback delay to improve the system capacity remarkably. Detailed network-performance results are shown from a comprehensive dynamic system-level simulator, and these presented results are obtained for a macrocellular scenario with best effort packet data services to reflect the expected improvement from introducing delay-restricted scheduling in a multi-carrier TD-HSDPA system.

Adaptive coding and modulation is an important topic considering future communication systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ODFM) has been identified as a promising technique, which offers the possibility for further enhancements by bit and power loading schemes. Commonly, channel coding has not been considered in the optimization of such algorithms. It is, however, an important component used in nearly every communication system. In this paper we propose a new scheme to adapt code rate, modulation and transmit power by solving a convex optimization problem based on a bisection approach in order to enhance the frame error rate at a fixed target rate.

The case of rotation, in use together with coding in a channel with B fading blocks, is analyzed in terms of diversity properties of the coded systems with multi-dimensional rotated constellations (coded-rotated system) output. First closed-form expression obtained is related to the diversity performance of unrotated generic coding structures with given minimum distance, d, block length, and number of fading blocks. Afterwards, another closed-form expression is derived for distinguishing the effect of rotation applied on the given coding structures. This latter expression yields a strict lower bound on the probability of attaining full diversity for any coded-rotated system and gives us a tool to evaluate the improvement with respect to systems involving only coding and also systems with only rotation. The results shown summarize the benefits of utilizing rotation together with coding, even in the cases of very simple non-full-diversity rotations like DFT rotations.

MBMS is an efficient means to provide multimedia services by sharing common radio channels among a group of users. This paper presents performance evaluation of MBMS in LTE framework by a simulator set up according to 3GPP standard. A general comparison is first made among point-topoint (p-t-p), point-to-multipoint (p-t-m) and single frequency network (SFN), which shows that p-t-m with feedback is more efficient than p-t-p, and SFN can lead to remarkable performance enhancement. We also elaborate the packet scheduling process of p-t-m with feedback scheme, which involves sector-specific adaptive modulation coding (AMC) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), and then investigate the gain provided by them. It is shown that with moderate user number, fast AMC and HARQ can give 25% and 70% throughput gain respectively. However, this gain decreases with user number.

Bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) has been verified to be a powerful transmission scheme with remarkable bit-error-rate performance. Among those well-designed BICM-ID systems, we observe that some of the channel encoders and signal mappers are inherently with the capability of multilevel protection. A new scheduling rule called protection matching which can properly schedule the data flow between the channel encoder and signal mapper with respect to the multilevel protection capability is proposed to achieve further performance improvement. Not only theoretical analysis but also simulation results are given to verify the advantage of the proposed design.

A near-capacity time hopping (TH) pulse position modulation (PPM) based ultrawideband (UWB) impulse radio (IR) system is proposed, which invokes iteratively detected self-concatenated convolutional codes (SeCCC) and employs powerful design technique of extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. Orthogonal prolate spheroidal wave function (OPSWF) based signalling pulse shapes are used for the sake of minimizing the multi-user interference (MUI) and intersymbol interference (ISI). Recursive systematic convolutional (RSC) codes are employed as constituent codes combined with an interleaver for randomising the extrinsic information exchange between the constituent codes. Furthermore, a puncturer assists us in increasing the achievable bandwidth efficiency. Iterative decoding is invoked for exchanging extrinsic information between the hypothetical decoder components at the receiver end. The convergence behaviour of the decoder is analysed with the aid of bit-based EXIT charts. Finally, we propose a novel THPPM-UWB-IR-SeCCC system configuration, which is capable of operating within about 0.9 dB of the information-theoretic limits.

In this paper, we evaluate the throughput performance of Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) protocols using Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) based on either the instantaneous Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) or the average SNR. We also propose a cross layer optimization algorithm in order to offer the highest throughput at the physical (PHY) layer and verify some Quality Of Service (QOS) constraints at the Medium Access (MAC) layer such as the Probability of Packet Erasure (PPE) and the transmission delay. Simulation results are also provided in different contexts in order to verify the tightness of the derived results.

In order to enhance soft-handover performance in the downlink of DS-CDMA systems, we propose to use different codes at the base stations in the active set to encode the information sequence targeted to a mobile station. For reliable information recovery, in case all links except one happen to be simultaneously in deep fade, self-decodable complementary punctured convolution codes, inspired from Hybrid ARQ III, are used. When turbo-decoding is feasible at the mobile station, new complementary codes, using different interleavers followed by a common systematic recursive convolutional encoder, are proposed for an additional enhancement in performance. Experimental evaluation of the enhancement in performance provided by complementary coding is carried for both Gaussian and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed coding schemes can provide very significant gains. In some cases, gains around 4 dB can be achieved.
