One of the most important applications of digital signal processing (DSP) is wireless communication. This kind of application requires low power implementation of DSP, which generally uses fixed-point arithmetic. The fixed-point architectures should be developed to maintain the energy consumption power at a reasonable level. In this paper, an approach which adapts the fixed-point specification according to the input receiver signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is proposed. To underline our approach interest, the rake receiver of a WCDMA receiver is examined. Results show about 25% - 40% energy savings with our dynamic precision approach.

A generalized symbol-rate-increased (GSRI) pragmatic adaptive trellis coded modulation (ATCM) applied to a multi-carrier CDMA system with bi-orthogonal keying is analyzed. In, an efficient ATCM scheme using GSRI-TCM has been proposed. However, since the modulation and coding selection is based on the ideal SNR estimation method, performance evaluations employing practical channel estimation scheme is desired. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the multi-carrier CDMA with GSRI ATCM employing practical SNR estimation. The performance evaluations on a multi-path fading channel are presented.

In this paper, we propose a new open-loop rate/link adaptation algorithm (ARFHT) for the emerging high-speed IEEE 802.11n WLANs. ARFHT extends the legacy rate adaptation algorithms for SISO WLANs to make it applicable in the context of MIMO-based 802.11n WLANs. It adapts the MIMO mode in terms of spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity, the two fundamental characteristics of the 802.11n MIMO PHY. It also modifies the link estimation and probing behavior of legacy SISO algorithms. The combined adaptation to the appropriate MIMO mode as well as the appropriate modulation coding scheme selection achieves high channel utilization. In this paper, we provide the intuition and the design details of the ARFHT algorithm. A comprehensive simulation study using ns-2 will demonstrate that ARFHT achieves excellent throughput performance in most scenarios and is highly responsive to varying link conditions, with minimum overhead.

A new class of maximum-transition-run (MTR) block codes is presented which is based on a novel enumerative encoding scheme to construct codes with predetermined j and k constraints. These MTR codes are a generalization of Fibonacci codes, and they share a similar optimality property: For a given length N, they contain the maximum number of length-N codewords satisfying the (j, k) constraint. Furthermore, by using a slight modification of the code construction, one obtains practical high-rate modulation codes with limited error propagation.

This paper proposes a distributed optimal relay selection scheme in wireless multi-hop cooperative networks where the wireless channels are modeled as first-order finite-state Markov channels (FSMCs) and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is applied. The FSMC model is used to approximate the time variations of the average received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The state of a relay consists of the channel states of both source-to-relay and relay-to-destination links. In this scheme, a stochastic decision making approach is taken to select the optimal relay according to the states of all available relays with the quality of service (QoS) optimization goals of mitigating error propagation and increasing spectral efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing scheme.

In a frequency selective channel for wireless applications, we provide a new resources allocation procedure that enables the transmission of scalable images in accordance with end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. This scheme is based on an Unequal Error Protection (UEP) policy with the possible truncation of the source data layers (after the source coding stage) and an optimal use of the available resources for each layer (with local flattening over the channel portion). The proposed algorithm is applied to the transmission of JPEG-2000 scalable images over an OFDM channel. We analyze the performance of our method in term of perceived quality and speed, and show better results than State-Of-The-Art UEP schemes.

The Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) is a hybrid frequency-hoped, direct sequence spread spectrum system that utilizes a (31, 15) Reed-Solomon (RS) code and cyclical code-shift keying (CCSK) modulation for the data packets, where each encoded symbol consists of five bits. In this paper, an alternative waveform compatible with the existing JTIDS direct sequence spread spectrum channel waveform is analyzed. The system considered uses the same (31, 15) RS encoding as the original JTIDS but uses 32-ary orthogonal signaling with 32 chip baseband waveforms such as Walsh functions instead of CCSK. Currently, the JTIDS waveform is received noncohe-rently at the chip level, but in this paper the performance of the alternative, JTIDS-compatible waveform is evaluated for coherent as well as for noncoherent demodulation in order to ascertain the performance possible if coherent demodulation were practical. For coherent demodulation, each pair of five-bit symbols at the output of the RS encoder is assumed to undergo serial-to-parallel conversion to two five-bit symbols, which are then independently transmitted on the in-phase and quadrature component of the carrier, with the result that the data rate for coherent demodulation is twice that for noncoherent demodulation. The performance of the alternative waveform for the relatively benign case where additive white Gaussian noise is the only noise present as well as when pulse-noise interference is present is investigated for both coherent and noncoherent demodulation.

We investigate the error exponent of exclusive-or multiple-access channels (XMAC) where the receiver wants to reconstruct the exclusive-or of incoming messages from two transmitters. We consider both the multiple access channel (MAC) strategy and the network coding (NC) strategy. In our analysis, the cutoff rate is used as a performance measure. Assuming a Gaussian XMAC and binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation at each node, we show that the MAC strategy performs better than the NC strategy in the low rate region while the NC strategy performs better in the high rate region.

In radio resource management of multimedia broadcast/multicast service (MBMS), user equipment (UE) feedback can be used by evolved Node B (eNB) to improve the radio spectral efficiency. As UE feedback is costly we here suggest schemes to reduce the uplink feedback while maintaining the spectral efficiency. For the 3 schemes analyzed in this paper we utilize the special characteristic of a broadcast channel, that spectral efficiency is mainly determined by the UE with lowest channel quality. The performance of the suggested schemes are evaluated with long term evolution (LTE) system simulation and we conclude that using geometry for selecting feedback UEs is the optimal solution and 4 feedback UEs are enough to meet the coverage requirement.

WIMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a promising new networking technology that potentially offers high speed and wide area wireless access services that complement consistently the 3G and WiFi access networks capabilities. The standard proposes an adaptive modulation scheme which allows WiMax nodes to communicate from various modulation coding schemes according to the link quality. However, the standard does not define a detailed link adaptation algorithm and currently, the most largely used modulation adaptation technique is based on a channel quality lookup table. We argue that this method is not able to make the best adaptation decisions and delivers a sub-optimal goodput in numerous communication contexts. In this paper, we propose a novel cross layer based modulation adaptation mechanism which incorporates the use of adaptive erasure code with the physical layer information to significantly improve the goodput and transmission efficiency. Simulation results show that our proposal adapts more efficiently to real environments and achieves a significant gain on the goodput delivered to mobile nodes.
