Although the topic of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) over different fading channels is well investigated, but its exact closed form symbol error rate (SER) expression employing orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) over uncorrelated Nakagami-m fading channels for M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK) is still not available. The closed form expressions are very useful for evaluating system's performance without carrying out time consuming simulations. In this paper, we thus, derive exact closed form expression for average SER of MIMO-OFDM systems employing gray coded M-PSK modulation using the traditional probability density function (PDF) approach over uncorrelated Nakagami-m fading channels using OSTBCs. We further deduce the closed form expressions of average SER for gray coded binary phase-shift keying (B-PSK), quadrature phase-shift keying (Q-PSK) and eight phase-shift keying (8-PSK) modulation schemes by computing the value of the parameter, g for M = 2, 4 and 8, respectively. These expressions are valid for both frequency-flat and frequency-selective Nakagami-m fading MIMO channels and can be evaluated without any numerical integration techniques. We also show that average BER and SER in case of frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels remain independent to the number of taps, L of the multipath fading channel used in the system. Moreover, by utilizing the encoding and decoding algorithms for various OSTBCs, Monte Carlo simulation of MIMO-OFDM systems using multiple transmit and receive antennas for different gray coded phase-shift keying modulations is presented. Theoretical results and the simulation results are drawn on the same figures in order to show the validity of our analytical results.

This paper presents a novel combination of 8-QAM trellis codes with multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) and controlled equalization for multiuser downlink Rayleigh fading channel. In literature, minimum mean square error (MMSE) is known to be the optimal single user detection (SUD) technique. We show that the proposed system, with 16-state encoder and full system load, outperforms an equivalent system that uses MMSE as the equalization technique. Moreover, as the number of active users increase from single user load to a fully loaded system, error performance of the proposed system surpasses an equivalent system using MMSE. This suggests that the proposed system is more robust to multiple access interference (MAI) as compared to that with MMSE.

Antenna subset selection methods are feasible to reduce the hardware complexity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Numerous methods have been devised to resolve this problem. Most of these selection schemes were applied to specific system models and for frequency flat systems. In broadband systems like WiMAX (IEEE 802.16-2004), the overall channel under consideration is typically frequency selective, and flat only over the subcarrier bandwidths. In this work, receive antenna subset selection schemes are applied to a WiMAX compliant MIMO-OFDM transmission system. Simulation results in terms of average throughput and BER on an adaptive modulation and coding link are shown. Very unexpectedly we find that the optimal selection for maximum throughput, does not give the best results in terms of BER performance. We thus conclude that minimum BER is not the right choice for antenna selection. We also find through our simulations that the simple, low complex norm based selection algorithm, provides good results, close to optimal selection in frequency selective channels.

Cooperative networks have been appreciated for their spatial diversity benefits in wireless communications. In this paper, we will explore the error performance of cooperative networks depending on the relay locations. Both decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying protocols are considered with an arbitrary number of relays. To provide simple transceiver structure, differential modulation scheme is adopted for both protocols. The effect of relay locations is investigated by considering the number of relays and transmit energy including energy optimization. We show that there exists a common point where the error performance of both protocols coincides. Based on these results, we can achieve the improvement in error performance by choosing the relaying protocol depending on relay locations.

In recent years, explosive based terrorism has grown enormously; moreover, chemical warfare is forecasted as the next terror inflicting agents. Detecting such materials is a challenging task. Aiming towards "artificial nose", we take advantage of highly sensitive porous silicon microcantilevers devices in combination with non specific polymer layers and monitor their interaction with target analytes. Our screening method is through passive and active modes of detection and has been proved effective for distinguishing between different isotopically labeled substances.

We propose a resource allocation algorithm that provides enhanced QoS and efficiency for layered video multicast over mobile WiMAX. The application is characterized by groups of users acquiring popular video programs over a fading channel. To accommodate various bandwidth requirements and adaptive perceptual quality to different users, video streams are coded into base and enhancement layers using scalable video coding technology. Correspondingly, the optimization problems, which assign the most appropriate modulation schemes to provide best video quality to as many users, can be formulated using opportunistic multicasting concept. We maximize the minimum effective throughput across all users for mandatory (base) layer delivery through adapting modulation and coding schemes. At the same time, optional (enhancement) layers are allocated to maximize total utility. Thus the basic video quality can be efficiently guaranteed to all subscribers while making most out of limited resources on enhancement information. We further present an FEC rate adaptation scheme to approach theoretical performance. Favorable performance of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated by simulations utilizing realistic Mobile WiMAX parameters.

Hierarchical modulation provides layered transmission and is a very promising mechanism to reliably provide basic services to receivers with various reception conditions. Because the high priority layer is allocated with more power, the low priority layer is vulnerable to noise and interference. This paper applies a repetition coding to either of the layers of hierarchical modulation to cancel the inter-carrier-interference, and thus the inter-layer-interference. More importantly, the proposed scheme provides a finer granularity of modulation order, which makes it more flexible to support various radio resource allocation.

Using relays to extend the coverage of base-stations in cellular systems has been of interest in recent years as it can reduce the cost of installing more base-stations and yet cater to mobile terminals within a wider coverage area. There have been recent advances where two or more half duplex relay stations are used to recover the loss of bandwidth due to the use of half duplex relays. However, such schemes would not be beneficial in cases where the inter-relay channel is strong, and the relays start interfering each other. In this paper, we study the use of beamforming techniques to resolve the problem of inter-relay interference.

In this paper, we propose an optimal TCP throughput framework to optimize the TCP throughput in CR networks, which jointly considers the channel sensing decision and access policy as well as low layer design parameters. The TCP throughput optimization is achieved by a two step process. First, we select a channel to maximize the spectrum utilization by reducing the probability of collision with primary users. Secondly, for an available and accessed channel, a cross-layer approach is proposed to improve TCP throughput which adaptively adjusts the modulation and coding scheme/frame size based on the observed channel gain. Simulation results show that the TCP throughput can be improved substantially compared with the existing approach that maximizes physical layer throughput.

Ultra wide-band (UWB) indoor channel is highly time scattered with large number of multi-path and a transmit power of UWB systems is limited to low level. One method to overcome these weak points of UWB communication is diversity combining technique. In this paper, we simulate and analyze performance of pulse position modulation-time hopping (PPM-TH) UWB systems adopting a space time block coding (STBC) scheme in indoor wireless channels. Indoor wireless channel is modeled as a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model proposed as a UWB indoor channel model by the IEEE ***3a in July 2003. In the STBC encoding process, an Alamouti algorithm for real-valued signals is employed because UWB signals have the type of real signal constellation. It is assumed that the transmitter has knowledge about channel state information. From simulation results, it is shown that the performance of PPM-TH UWB systems with the STBC scheme is improved due to diversity and array gains. And the system performance can increase although there is multi-user interference.
